Freshman Maddy Pietz led the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls track and field team to a sixth-place finish in the two-day WIAA Division 2 state championships that concluded Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Pietz’s two runner-up finishes accounted for 16 of the Chargers’ 24 points. Dodgeville/Mineral Point won the meet with 36 points.

After running the 100-meter dash in 12.56 seconds in the preliminary round Friday, Pietz finished second in the final at 12.8. Mount Horeb’s Nadia Williams (12.71) won the event. Pietz (25.99) finished behind Williams (25.85) in the 200 final as well.

Pietz also ran a leg on the 1,600 relay team, which finished second in 4:03.29 to close the scoring for the Chargers. She was joined by Emily Norrbom, Mikayla King and Paige Norrbom. Dodgeville/Mineral Point won the event in 4:00.61.

There was no love lost between Bonduel High School and visiting Shiocton in Friday night’s WIAA Division 3 regional championship game in Bonduel.

Shiocton handed the Bears their only loss of the season last month and last year knocked them out the playoffs.

Bonduel got a measure of revenge Friday as a walk-off single by senior Colton Dobratz secured a 3-2 win in the 10th inning.

The regional championship is Bonduel’s second in three years.

“Since they gave us our only loss of the year, revenge is sweet, especially against a quality team like that,” Bonduel coach Don Gruenewald said. “We knew it was going to be a battle.”

“That is the kind of competition we have had all of these years.” Shiocton coach Jude Backman said. “It has always been even games all the way through.”

Left-hander Connor Rosin struck out 11 hitters through eight innings for Bonduel but came away without the decision. He allowed two runs, three hits and two walks. Travis Wollenberg got the win in relief.

Gage Kamp scored for Shiocton (19-7, 11-3 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) in the first inning on an RBI single by Mitch Ebben.

Rosin calmed down from there and retired 13 batters in a row from the second through sixth innings.

“He did what he always does. He is a location pitcher and he never gets rattled,” Backman said.

Pedersen put the Bears on the board with a single to score Wollenberg, who started at shortstop, in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Two innings later, Austin Siolka knocked in Pedersen on a standup double to pull the Bears ahead 2-1.

The lead held until the seventh inning when Rosin, who eclipsed 100 pitches by that point, began to tire. Shiocton second baseman Nate Schmidt’s RBI single scored designated hitter Brady Bellin to tie the game.

“I was hoping we could get the win in the seventh inning because we knew Connor was reaching his limit,” Gruenewald said.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Rosin was relieved by Pedersen, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning, walking two and striking out one.

Pedersen drew a walk to start the 10th inning, was sacrificed to second by Austin Siolka and scored on a two-out single by Dobratz to right field, beating the throw to the plate.

“When I was rounding third, I told myself I was going to score no matter what, and there was no way I was going to be stopped,” Pedersen said.

Wollenberg picked up the win for Bonduel (22-3, 13-1 CWC-8) with a scoreless 10th inning. He allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

Dobratz was 2 for 4. Pedersen was 2 for 5 and scored two runs.

Schmidt took the loss for Shiocton. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out one.

Bonduel opens sectional play at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Marathon against Marinette & Oconto Conference champion Coleman (20-6, 10-2 M&O). The winner will play either Marathon or Pacelli, which Bonduel defeated twice in the regular season, in the final.

BASEBALL

Gresham 0

The WIAA Division 4 regional final at Gresham was scoreless for the first three innings, but Wausaukee scored seven unanswered runs end the Wildcats’ season Friday.

No. 2-seeded Wausaukee totaled 12 hits off the Wildcats’ pitching duo of Christian Haffner and Ray Creapeau. Haffner went five innings with three strikeouts; Creapeau pitched the last two for No. 1-seeded Gresham and struck out one.

Neal Cerveny, Riley Nietzer, Beau Hoffman and Creapeau had Gresham’s hits.

The Wildcats finish the 2015 season at 13-7 overall and 12-6 in the Central Wisconsin Conference-10. Wausaukee moves to (11-9, 6-5 Marinette & Oconto Conference) will play Niagara in Tigerton on Tuesday.

Clintonville High School senior Allison Johnson earned a state title for the Truckers in the WIAA Division 2 State Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday.

Johnson finished the 800-meter run in 2 minutes and 12.72 seconds to finish ahead of Mary Hanson (2:13.23) of Dodgeville/Mineral Point.

Johnson’s win gave Clintonville a tie for fourth place in the team standings heading into the tournament’s second day, when a majority of the events are decided.

Clintonville senior Chrissy Betz qualified in the 100 hurdles. Her time of 16.56 placed her 13th after the first day; Lakeside Lutheran’s Meghan Pingel led the field at 14.92.

Clintonville senior Skyler Lehman reached the state final in the boys pole vault and finished 15th after not recording a qualifying effort Friday.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls are in contention in several events Saturday.

Freshman Maddy Pietz ranked second in the 100 with a preliminary time of 12.56. Mount Horeb’s Nadia Williams led the field at 12.38.

Williams (18 feet, 9.25 inches) also leads the field in the long jump; Pietz (16-5) is 11th.

Pietz (25.29) also was second in the 200, again behind Williams (25.07) heading into the second day.

Fellow Wittenberg-Birnamwood freshman Paige Norrbom (5-2) was 10th in the high jump in the first day of state competition, not far behind Brooke Blazei (5-5) of Martin Luther in first.

The Chargers also have two relay teams in the state final, with success in one and struggles in the other. Mikayla King, Emily Norrbom, Paige Norrbom and Pietz (4:02.74) were third in the 1,600 relay, led by Dodgeville/Mineral Point (4:01.27) after the first day.

In the 400 relay, the Chargers were 15th on the opening day. Samantha Kasprak, Kylie Linke, Micah Nier and Paige Norrbom finished in 1:49.17. Lakeside Lutheran leads the field at 1:43.71.

Competition resumes at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Gresham-Bowler high school senior Drew Payne earned a fifth-place finish in the opening day of the WIAA Division 3 Track and Field State Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday.

Payne (42 feet, 10 inches) earned four team points with his finish in the triple jump, which was won by Alex Idonije (44-6.5) of Wayland Academy. Payne’s finish put the Gresham-Bowler boys team in a tie for 19th in the standings with Reedsville, Crivitz and Alma-Pepin heading into the tournament’s second day.

Princeton-Green Lake led the field with 19 points. Boscobel was second with 16.

Menominee Indian senior Gordon James (22.92 seconds) was eighth in the 200-meter dash in the opening day, with Athens’ Aaron Wickman leading the field at 21.73.

In the second day, Payne will compete for the state title in the long jump. Most events are to be decided Saturday. Payne is in the second flight.

Menominee Indian senior Alphonso Smith is in the first flight for the shot put.

Competition resumes at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Shawano Community High School senior Daniel Boivin opened competition in the WIAA Division 1 Track and Field State Championships on Friday.

The Hawks’ senior qualified in both the 300-meter hurdles and the pole vault, while teammate and fellow senior Jake Klister qualified in the 800. Just one of those three Division 1 events were held on the first day of competition with Boivin (40.45 seconds) 18th during preliminaries for the 300 hurdles. He ran in the third flight and finished sixth.

The hurdles events, 800 run and pole vault are among the events to be decided in the tournament’s second day.

Competition resumes at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Well here it is, the first weekend of June. In terms of racing, it means the action on the track is beginning to heat up.

Enough weeks have passed to allow serious point contenders to establish themselves. This weekend should also bring about the much-anticipated season debuts of a handful of drivers.

Jared Siefert, Dan Michonski and Scott Stewart are each slated to make their 2015 season debuts.

Siefert has been a much-anticipated arrival. Siefert, a former IMCA Modified track champion as well as IMCA Modified national champion, has made the move this offseason to the Late Model ranks. Siefert’s father, Art, is a former Late Model driver as well as the 1982 Sportsman track champion at Shawano Speedway. Siefert will be competing in a chassis built by Anvelink race cars. It is the first car from the Anvelink shop in Navarino that will be raced by someone other than Nick Anvelink.

Siefert might take a few weeks to acclimate himself to the new class, but rest assured that Siefert will be a stout competitor sooner rather than later. Siefert and Anvelink working together forms a very formidable duo.

Michonski, a former IMCA Stock Car track champion, will be fielding a home-built chassis he calls an “M-Pire” chassis. Dan is a third-generation racer, hailing from the suburbs of Leopolis. Michonski’s grandfather, “Shorty” Michonski, was a front-runner in the Chicagoland racing scene in the 1950s. His father, Ben, “The Wily Veteran,” has been a great racer in his own right. Look for Michonski to be a threat to win right out of the box and add to “the class too tough to tame.”

Oconto driver Stewart is also looking to join the IMCA Stock Car class this week. Stewart started racing at Shawano back in the 1990s in the now defunct Hobby Stock division. Stewart has raced the past few seasons at 141 Speedway, but has decided to run Shawano weekly, as did his son (Steven Stewart) and brother-in-law (Dustin Loberger).

Stewart is another proven winner whose addition, along with Michonski’s, should make things interesting this summer.

Travis VanStraten, last year’s track champion, has had a virtual stranglehold on the division, though the racing has been hot and heavy throughout the field.

Also look for possible Late Model additions in town in preparation for the $2,000 to-win Late Model show July 13.

Hawks lose regional semifinal, 3-0By:

It took Nate Laude an inning to settle in.

Once he did, the Shawano Community High School pitcher didn’t allow much to the Green Bay Preble hitters.

However, Laude gave up a double between two walks in the first inning and surrendered two runs. That’s all the Hornets would need as their pitcher, Caleb Schoenholz, tossed a four-hitter in a 3-0 victory in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal playoff game Thursday afternoon at Joannes Stadium in Green Bay.

“We just couldn’t put anything together,” Shawano coach Rob Wolff said. “We had three or four runners in scoring position, and we never came up with the big hit. You’ve got to tip your hat, their kid is a good pitcher.”

Shawano could not solve Schoenholz, who got 12 of the 21 outs via strikeout. The junior left-hander gave up just five base runners all day and didn’t allow a Hawks runner to get past second base. Schoenholz, the Hornets’ ace at the beginning of the season, just returned from an arm injury that sidelined him for four weeks.

“I crossed my fingers he would be a little bit rusty,” Wolff said. “If that’s rusty, I’d hate to see when he was on. He was on today. He didn’t look like he had lost anything.”

Preble coach Andy Conard thought Schoenholz would be ready to go after the long rest. Schoenholz gave up just one double, three singles and one walk.

“They’ve got some really good hitters in their lineup, and you know when the good hitters in another team’s lineup aren’t getting the best of swings and are maybe swinging at some pitches out of the zone that they’re having a hard time picking up the spin,” Conard said. “You could tell that he had his good stuff today.”

Preble, the No. 2 seed in the regional, got a leadoff walk to Andy Peterik in the bottom of the first inning. Connor Lemmens followed with a rope to right field and was trying to stretch a double to a triple, but was thrown out at third base. Peterik scored on the play. Ryan Dougherty walked with one out, stole second and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

“We kind of scratch and claw, that’s kind of how we play,” Conard said. “It was nice to get two right away. You don’t want to play from behind, obviously, if you can help it.”

The No. 7-seeded Hawks (16-11, 9-7 Bay Conference) got a one-out double from Laude in the second inning, but Schoenholz struck out Wai-Ta-Sa Grignon and Kasey Kristof to end the threat.

In the third, Shawano’s Daniel Hanauer singled to left to start the inning and later moved to second on a wild pitch. Tommy Stueck tried two sacrifice bunts, but ended up striking out. Zach Sousek and Ty Schmidt were also retired.

Preble (18-9, 13-7 Fox River Classic) tacked on an insurance run in the third as Dougherty tripled with two out and Schoenholz hit an RBI double.

Again in the fifth, Shawano got a leadoff single from Schmidt, but he couldn’t get any farther than second base.

Laude threw six innings and allowed three earned runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out five. Laude worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth and stranded seven runners for the game.

Offensively, Laude had two hits and Hanauer and Schmidt had the other two.

“You get into tournament play, you’ve got to come up with that hit,” Wolff said. “We get one or two runs and it’s a different ballgame – 3-1, 3-2, you never know. We never could put any pressure on them.”

The loss ended the careers of nine Shawano seniors: Chase Henning, Sousek, Schmidt, Jack Lacy, Grant Wainio, Brendan Cummings, Stueck, Mason Boogren and Brandon Warrington.

“It was tough to say goodbye, but that’s life. Life goes on,” Wolff said. “I know they’ll all be successful. They’re all going onto school and they’ll all come back and see me someday.”

The seniors made a huge impact on the baseball program, and for that Wolff will be forever grateful.

“One of our goals this year was to finish third in the Bay,” Wolff said. “Denmark was 14-2, West De Pere was 14-2, both quality programs. I want to get Shawano baseball there, and we finished third this year. This group, a lot of the have been three-year starters. To have finished 16-11 and we lost like five one-run ballgames during the year, so it could have been a lot different.

“They took a huge step of lifting Shawano baseball where I want it to get. I’m hoping the underclassmen saw that and take heart in that and we get the program up. I’d love to be in these games every year.”

No. 5-seeded Shawano won its WIAA Division 2 regional opener 7-3 at No. 4 Hortonville on Thursday.

Louisa Keenan gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead with a goal 13 minutes into the game. Megan Klitzke made it a 2-0 lead 10 minutes later. Sarah Dickmann and Sydney Steinbach added Shawano goals before halftime to extend its lead to 4-0.

Savannah Johnson, Keenan and Dickmann added second-half goals for the Hawks, who had to withstand a late rally by Hortonville, which scored three goals in the final 20 minutes.

Dickmann had three assists. Matisen Meyers and Morgan Klitzke each recorded an assist.

Carlie Hinnefeld had six saves for Shawano, and Madelyn Rabideau had two.

Shawano improved to 9-9-2 overall and advances to face top-seed Rhinelander on the road Saturday in the regional final.

Multiple Shawano Community High School student-athletes took home hardware at the spring athletic banquet Monday at The Gathering in Shawano.

The event, sponsored by the Shawano Athletic Booster Club, also included a retirement announcement.

Athletic Director Charmaine Schreiber said Tom Webster was retiring after 27 combined years as head coach of the girls and boys tennis program.

Webster had an enthusiastic announcement of his own, stating the tennis courts will be repaired in time for next season.

“I am so happy that it is happening … after I retire,” Webster joked.

Courtney Ainsworth and Cole Huntington took home the most hardware Monday.

Ainsworth was named Female Athlete of the Year, received two softball awards and earned a 12-sport participation award. She and Braden Mueller also received the Neuman Memorial Award, which includes a $1,000 scholarship, for achievements in the classroom and community and on the playing field.

Ainsworth and Huntington were honored as the Scholar Athletes of the Year. Huntington was class valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA; Ainsworth finished with a 3.9 GPA. Huntington was also a 12-sport participant and was named to the Academic All-State team by the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin.

“It is not an easy task balancing school and golf,” coach Dean Kugler said. “This year we have four academic all-state. Sometimes I ask (Cole), are you sure you want to miss three days of class for golf?”

The SCHS golfers last week advanced to the WIAA Division 2 state championship.

Zack Sousek won three awards: Male Athlete of the Year, a Don Martzke Award, given to a student who demonstrates dedication to a number of sports, and 12-sport participant.

Senior Courtney Vomastic also received the Martzke Award, which includes a $500 scholarship.

GIRLS SOCCER

Junior Sarah Dickman was named the team’s most valuable player after leading the team in assists (13) and finishing second in goals (nine). Junior Morgan Klitzke, who had 15 goals and six assists, received the award as the team’s top offensive player. Sophomore Colleen McFarlane won the defensive award.

BOYS GOLF

Senior Braden Mueller, who was the Bay Conference Player of the Year, was named the team’s most valuable golfer. Sophomore Josh Mueller was the most improved golfer. Huntington was honored as the team captain, and was joined on the Academic All-State list by senior Casey Clark and the Muellers.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Two of the five track and field award winners — seniors Daniel Boivin and Jake Klister — will compete in the WIAA Division 1 state track meet in La Crosse this week.

Boivin received awards as the most valuable player and as the most valuable in the field events. He was also named to the All-Bay Conference first team (pole vault) and second team (300 hurdles).

Klister received the MVP award for the running events. He and 3,200-meter relay teammates Andrew Cardish, Austin Lhotka and Brandon Pagel were first-team All-Bay Conference. Klister received second-team honors in the 800.

Cardish was named the relay teams’ MVP, and Lhotka was honored with the coaches award.

Zeke Gueths, who advanced to sectionals in the discus, received the award for most improved player. The junior was second-team All-Bay Conference in the event.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

School-record holders Kristina Kurtz and Averi Vomastic each received two awards.

Kurtz, who holds the pole vault record, was honored as the team’s most valuable player and as the most valuable relay team member, an honor she shared with Vomastic, who also was named the most improved player. Vomastic, a freshman, broke the school record in the 300-meter hurdles.

Kurtz was named first-team all-conference in the pole vault and honorable mention in the 800-meter run. Kurtz and Vomastic earned All-Bay Conference second-team honors as members of the 800-meter relay team with Jewel Carey and Sara Hokenstad. Kurtz also received honorable mention in the Bay with 1,600-meter relay teammates Carey, Hokenstad and Hannah Wendorff.

Junior Erika Dunnum was the most valuable player in the field events, and Wendorff was given the coaches’ award.

BOYS TENNIS

Webster noted the 2015 season was challenging as participation declined from 30 last season to 13 this year.

Theodore Mickelson and Zach Soper were the team’s most valuable players. Sajen Knuepel and Shawn Klemens were honored as the Hawks’ most improved players. Jacob Schoenike received the Team Player Award, and Kyle Easter was selected as the most dedicated player.

SOFTBALL

The Ainsworths received three of the five softball awards. Courtney received the MVP award and the Heart of the Hawk for her leadership of a young squad. Nicki Ainsworth shared the defensive MVP honor with Allison Raddant. Brianna Zook was honored as the team’s top rookie.

Coach Kevin Isaacson said Raddant’s defensive skills at second base enabled the Hawks to create a new defensive scheme.

BASEBALL

With eight home runs and a team-leading .487 batting average, senior Chase Henning was named the team’s most valuable player and its offensive player of the year. The outfielder was one vote short of being named Bay Conference Player of the Year, coach Robert Wolff said. “For an athlete to hit eight in a year, that is impressive,” Wolff said.

Grant Wainio was named the team’s top defensive player, and junior Nate Laude was named its rookie of the year.

Bonduel High School used a well-balanced attack to rout visiting Weyauwega-Fremont 9-2 Tuesday and advance to a WIAA Division 3 regional championship game.

The Bears pounded out 14 hits, scoring in all but the sixth inning, as they extended their winning streak to eight games.

No. 1-seeded Bonduel has not lost since May 12, when it fell 1-0 to Shiocton. The teams, which split their regular season contests, meet again Friday in Bonduel for the regional title.

Junior Trevor Pedersen pitched six stellar innings to get the win Tuesday, and senior third baseman Hunter VanDerLinden went 4 for 4 with four RBIs.

Bonduel (21-3, 13-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior first baseman Connor Rosin (2 for 4, two runs, two RBIs) drove in Colton Dobratz (2 for 4) with a triple and scored on a single by VanDerLinden.

VanDerLinden, who missed 10 straight games due to an injured hamstring, blasted a home run in the bottom of the second inning to bolster the Bears’ lead to 5-0.

VanDerLinden came close to a second home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, hitting a double to the left-center field warning track, about 5 feet from clearing the wall.

Bonduel coach Don Gruenewald was not surprised by VanDerLinden’s performance.

“That is Hunter,” Gruenewald said. “He was ready to come back a week before, but he is good to go right now. He is just going to all out until he can’t anymore, and I don’t see any problem with him reinjuring it.”

“The whole team pitched in because one guy got a hit, then the next guy got a hit, all game long,” VanDerLinden said. “I would say the whole team was on today.”

Pedersen continued to hit catcher Tanner Mews’ target throughout the game, mixing his curveball and fastball to keep the the Indian hitters off balance. He struck out nine, allowed one run on five hits and issued just one walk.

“He wanted the ball, and his main goal to start the year, was not to give up any hits all year,” Gruenewald said. “That is the mentality he had. He only gave up 16 or 17 hits all year in the seven or eight games he pitched.”

No. 5-seeded Weyauwega-Fremont (8-18, 5-9 CWC-8) scored its only run against Pedersen in the top of the second inning when Ricky Schroeder singled in Trevor Wetzel.

Bonduel responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Rosin again drove in Dobratz and scored on VanDerLinden’s blast.

The Bears added a run in the third on a Pedersen single down the third base line to score Travis Wollenberg. In the fourth, Blake Stoss, running for VanDerLinden, scored on a fielder’s choice.

Bonduel tacked on two runs in the fifth inning, one on a single by Tanner Mews, scoring Wyatt Erb, and the other on a VanDerLinden single, scoring Dobratz.

VanDerLinden pitched the final inning for Bonduel, allowing one run on a bases-loaded single by Wetzel, scoring Bryce Akey.

Indians coach Joe Sambs knew his squad, which lost its two regular season games to the Bears by a combined score of 27-7, would be in for difficult game.

“They are a good team,” he said. “They got a nice core of seniors and have had our number for the last few years. We were a very inconsistent team all season and came out fairly well last night (10-2 win over Brillion) and went back to our inconsistency and did not make any plays.”

Akey took the loss. He allowed five runs on six hits in two innings, struck out two and issued one walk.

Gruenewald plans to start Rosin in the Friday matchup against Shiocton, the regional’s No. 3 seed, which handed the Bears their only defeat.

“I expect him to come out like he has all year,” Gruenewald said. “He has been sharp all year, mixing his pitches including his slider, curveball and fastball.”

The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The Shawano Community High School boys track and field team has two competitors in this week’s WIAA Division 1 state finals in La Crosse.

Senior Daniel Boivin qualified in both the 300-meter hurdles and the pole vault, while Jake Klister advanced in the 800-meter run.

Boivin’s sectional-best mark of 14 feet in the pole vault puts him in the top half of the qualifying heights in the event. Boivin (40.51 seconds) starts the hurdles event in the third heat, which also includes Jordan Mason of Badger, who has the event’s fastest seed time at 38.76.

Klister (1:57.24) starts the 800 in the first of two sections. Senior Eric Brown of Wisconsin Lutheran is a two-time champion and record holder in the 800 run. He has the fourth-fastest qualifying time in the event this year at 1:55.25, less than two seconds off the best qualifying pace.

Bay Port has qualifiers in 14 events, including relays, to lead the Division 1 entries. Wisconsin Lutheran and Middleton are next with competitors in 12 events, while Stevens Point has participants in 11 events.

Division 2

Clintonville senior Skyler Lehman is the lone area state-qualifier in Division 2 with his 13-3 mark in the pole vault, which ranks behind a five-person tie for the third-best. Edgerton’s Alex Schmidt is the lone qualifier to reach 14 feet, followed by West Salem’s Mac Anderson (13-9).

Freedom and Milwaukee Lutheran will compete in 12 events, including relays, which are the most of any school in Division 2. Lakeland and Little Chute are represented in 11 events.

Division 3

Gresham-Bowler senior Drew Payne qualified for both the triple jump (43-8) and the long jump (21-6.75) in Division 3.

Junior Kristian Welch of Iola-Scandinavia is the returning champion in the long jump. His jump of 22-10 ½ at sectionals ranks first in the field by a half inch.

Menominee Indian senior Gordon James (11.26) qualified in the 100, and teammate senior Alphonso Smith (47-1.25) qualified in the shot put.

Marathon will be competing in the most number of events in the D3 meet with 11, including relays. Cambridge and Princeton/Green Lake have competitors in eight events, and Newman Catholic and Rosholt have qualifiers in eight events.

Bonduel High School sophomore Emily Sorenson will try to follow her sectional long jump title with a state title in this week’s WIAA Division 2 state finals for girls track and field in La Crosse.

Sorenson (17 feet, ½ inch) won the sectional at home Friday and will open state competition in the second flight Friday. The flight also includes Mount Horeb’s Nadia Williams (18-10), who is the only state qualifier to break the 18-foot threshold.

Marion senior Cassidy Detert will try to follow her sectional titles in the discus and shot put with Division 3 state titles. Her discus toss of 130-9 and shot put effort of 40-9.25 were both top marks in the Rosholt sectional.

Clintonville and Wittenberg-Birnamwood, meanwhile, have multiple competitors at the D2 state meet.

Clintonville senior Allison Johnson (2 minutes, 16.94 seconds) won the sectional title in the 800 at Bonduel. She will be joined at state by fellow Truckers seniors Chrissy Betz and Jessica Petruzates; Betz (16.26) qualified in the 100-meter hurdles and Petruzates (12:00) is in the 3,200.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood will have a full bus on its way to the state final after its performance at the sectional in Amery on Friday. Maddy Pietz won both the 100 (12.49) and the 200 (25.84), along with a qualifying finish in the long jump (16-8). She also helped the 1,600 relay team to a first-place finish. Emily Norrbom, Mikayla King and Paige Norrbom joined Pietz to finish in 4:08.25 to win the event and qualify for the state final.

The Chargers also qualified Alexis Balliett (12:11.15) in the 3,200, Micah Nier (35-4) in the triple jump, Paige Norrbom (5-1) in the high jump and Anna Hartman (107-9) in the discus. They also qualified multiple relay teams.

Samantha Kasprak, Maykayla Verkuilen, Nier and Emily Norrbom (52.76) qualified in the 400 relay; Kasprak, Kylie Linke, Nier and Paige Norrbom (1:49.64) qualified in the 800 relay and Balliett, Nier, King and Emily Norrbom (9:57.82) qualified in the 3,200 relay.

Lakeside Lutheran leads all schools in Division 2 with representation in 12 events, including relays. Wittenberg-Birnamwood has the second-most event entries with 11. Osceola is third with nine, and Dodgeville/Mineral Point is next with eight.

In Division 3, Newman Catholic has athletes competing in 13 events, including relays. Cuba City has qualified competitors in 12 events, and St. Mary’s Springs is entered in 11 events.

BASEBALL

NEW Lutheran 2

The Wildcats ended a Green Bay rally to maintain their lead and win the WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal at home Wednesday.

Gresham (13-6, 12-6 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) capitalized on four Lutheran errors and held a 3-0 lead after four innings. The Wildcats scored a run in the first, second and fourth innings.

Winning pitcher Derek Bowman had six strikeouts in the complete-game win and pitched five scoreless innings to start the game. His shutout bid was snapped with a two-run sixth inning from No. 5-seeded Green Bay.

Bowman pitched a scoreless seventh to secure the win for No. 1 Gresham. He allowed five hits and a walk.

Drew Haffner and Neal Cerveny had two hits each for the Wildcats, who finished with five hits.

Gresham will host No. 2 seed Wausaukee at 4:30 p.m. Friday for the regional championship.

Assumption 6

Tigerton 2

The Tigers held an early 2-0 lead but Assumption scored six unanswered for the WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal win Wednesday.

Connor Harris took the loss for Tigerton (6-14, 5-13 Central Wisconsin Conference-10), allowing eight hits and striking out three. He also had two hits, while Patrick Bailey, Robert Graham and Alan Parrott had one hit each.

Tony Kuentjes earned the win for Assumption (7-11, 3-4 Marawood South).

Shawano Community High School needed everything from two of its seniors to survive the opening round of the WIAA Division 1 regional baseball tournament Tuesday.

Chase Henning delivered the first blow, a tape-measure shot in the bottom of the first inning, and ace pitcher Grant Wainio tossed seven shutout innings as the Hawks defeated visiting Wausau East, 3-0, for their first postseason win in two years.

“I just wanted to put the ball in play, get on base, and make the defense work out there,” Henning said. “We definitely knew we could win if we did everything right and played sound baseball.”

Wainio cruised through the first three innings, holding Wausau East hitless until a leadoff single by Luke Strick in the fourth inning — the first of East’s three hits. Wainio walked two and struck out three in seven innings.

“Grant stepped and made big pitches when he had to, and that home run in the first inning was huge,” Hawks coach Robert Wolff said. “I knew (Wausau East) was going to play good solid defense and knew it was going to be a tough game.”

Wausau East coach Steve Heinrich agreed, but admitted his Lumberjacks (10-17, 3-9 Wisconsin Valley Conference) had their backs to the wall upon arriving at Memorial Park in Shawano.

“The bottom line is we were the 10th seed coming to Shawano, the seventh seed, on their home field,” Heinrich said. “We knew we were going to have a tough ballgame in front of us.”

Henning started Shawano’s two-run fourth inning, collecting his second hit of the game and scoring on a one-out double by Wainio. Adam Bartz, appearing as Wainio’s pinch runner, scored the third run on a wild pitch by Strick.

Strick, who allowed three hits in six innings, held the Hawks scoreless the final three frames.

Wainio ran into trouble in the fifth inning when he loaded the bases, on two singles and a walk, with one out, but escaped unscathed following a pop out and grounder to second baseman Ky Schmidt.

“That was a big jam that could have easily scored two runs, but he made some big pitches when he had to,” Wolff said.

Wainio regained his form the next inning, sitting down the Lumberjacks in order.

“He definitely battled, and I can’t say enough about how hard he works. He definitely goes out there and gives it his best,” Henning said.

East mounted a final rally in the seventh, getting two runners on base before Henning snagged Ben Schubring’s laser to right-center field to send the Hawks to the second round.

Shawano (16-10, 9-7 Bay Conference) travels to No. 2-seed Green Bay Preble (17-8, 13-7 Fox River Classic) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Junior Nate Laude will take the hill for Shawano.

Braden Mueller finishes in top 20By:

The Shawano Community High School boys golf team ended its season with a tie for sixth in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional at Brown County Golf Course in Green Bay.

Senior Braden Mueller led the Hawks (358) with a 10-over par 82. Bay Port (314) edged Notre Dame (317) for the sectional championship and a berth in the state tourney.

Mueller finished the front nine with a 42 and wasn’t far from the top 10, though everyone seemed far from Bay Port’s Jed Baranczyk, who finished with a 33 on the front nine and a four-stroke lead. Mueller continued challenging for one of the at-large individual bids to next week’s state final with a 40 on the back nine.

Green Bay Preble’s Isaac Prefontaine, who had a 38 on the front nine, added a 35 on the back nine to pass Baranczyk for the individual win with a 73. Baranczyk (76) finished in a tie for second with teammate Max Baranczyk and Appleton East’s Sam Kuklinski. Mueller finished in a tie for 13th.

Pulaski’s Jake Kennedy earned the third and final individual at-large bid to the state final, finishing tied for fifth with a 78. He will join Kuklinski, Prefontaine and the two highest-finishing teams at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison for the two-day Division 1 final, which starts Monday.

Shawano senior Cole Huntington had a 42 on the front nine, but his 49 on the back nine relegated him to a 91 and a tie for 32nd. Sophomore Braxten Surber also finished with a 91.

Errors help end Menominee Indian season at ShioctonBy:

Ty Latender pitched a great outing.

However, the Menominee Indian High School junior wasn’t able to get any run support.

Latender threw a complete game and allowed just one earned run, but the Menominee Indian defense committed five errors in a 6-0 loss at Shiocton in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal game Tuesday.

Offensively, the Eagles had just two hits, one an infield single, and didn’t get a runner past first base.

“They’re a very good team in a tough conference,” Menominee Indian coach Chris Rice said. “To stay within six, we played a decent game. We could have done more offensively.”

Latender kept Menominee Indian in the game. He finished with three walks, five hits and no strikeouts.

“Ty’s a great pitcher,” Rice said. “He’s our No. 1 pitcher for a reason. He throws good stuff and has a lot of movement. It makes it hard for teams to hit, and you saw it tonight against a very good hitting Shiocton team.”

No. 3-seeded Shiocton (18-6, 11-3 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) scored three of its runs when the hitters were behind in the count against Latender.

“We got two-out hits and a lot of guys did a nice job with two strikes,” Shiocton coach Jude Backman said. “We needed to hit it to a couple places, and we did. We were able to finally get the lead and relax and take the pressure off.”

“We had to be a little better on the basepaths,” Rice said. “We got thrown out stealing early in the game, and I think we could have that got that going with runners in scoring position, it would have been a big help because it puts a lot of pressure on the defense.”

Shiocton starting pitcher Nate Schmidt struck out three and forced seven groundball outs.

“His location was very good — he was painting the corners,” Rice said about Schmidt. “We just weren’t able to get the sweet spot of the bat on the ball.”

The Chiefs took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Brady Bellin had an 0-2 count at the plate and connected with a two-run double. Shiocton added another run in the fifth and then scored three times in the sixth as the Eagles committed two errors.

“The whole game, until it got to that last inning when they got up 6-0 on us, I thought, ‘We’re still in striking distance with what we’ve done in years past and games past,’” Rice said. “We’re a team that can score runs in bunches, but it just didn’t happen here today.”

“We expected a lot more,” Rice said. “At the same point it was 7-14, and we’ve had worse years in the past. The main thing is where the kids came from since Day 1. They really improved every game, and that’s why the season was a success with the improvement every game.”

The Eagles lose two seniors off this year’s squad: utility guy Michael Pecore and centerfielder Forrest Webster. Pecore was a first-team all-conference selection this year; Webster earned all-conference honorable mention as a junior.

The No. 3-seeded Tigers rallied from a four-run deficit to win Tuesday’s regional opener at home.

Alan Parrott’s two-out hit in the bottom of the seventh scored both the game-tying and game-winning runs for Tigerton. Parrott and Robert Graham had two hits each for the Tigers; Logan Moderson led the team with three.

Hayden Harris earned the win for Tigerton (6-13, 5-13 Central Wisconsin Conference-10), which will travel to No. 2-seed Assumption (11-14, 6-6 Marawood South) Wednesday for the regional semifinal.

No. 6 Marion concluded its season with a 2-18 record, 1-17 in the CWC-10.

Two runs in the bottom of the sixth Tuesday boosted the Truckers to the WIAA Division 2 regional final.

Aaron Morse scored Clintonville’s first run on a throwing error, and Nick Hogen scored the game-winner on a sacrifice fly from Hunter Vollmer. Hogen finished with Clintonville’s only two hits. He also pitched a complete-game win, allowing four hits.

Clintonville (11-4, 10-4 Eastern Valley) travels to No. 1 Notre Dame (14-9, 12-7 Fox River Classic) for Wednesday’s regional semifinal.

Marinette, the fifth seed in the regional, ends its season at 9-15 overall. 5-9 in the Bay Conference.

GOLF

Playoff hole keeps Eggert from state

Gresham Secondary School senior Killian Eggert finished his round Tuesday at McCauslin Brook Golf Course in Lakewood with an 80 in the WIAA Division 4 sectional. That put him in a four-player tie for second place, with the final two individual transfer positions to next week’s state final in Madison on the line.

Eggert, Iola-Scandinavia’s Zach Mortenson, Shiocton’s Max Beecher, Wabeno-Laona’s Maggie Warner and Gibraltar’s Sam Higginbotham played an extra hole for a tiebreaker. Mortenson and Beecher advanced.

Menominee Indian's John Long shot a 96 to finish in a tie for 44th.

Crandon (343) won the sectional title, with Gibraltar (347) second. St. Mary Central’s Grant Boyson shot a 78 to earn medalist honors and a state berth.
