Wisconsin bill would OK off-duty police with guns in school

Tue, 03/24/2015 - 11:55am
MADISON -- A proposal that would allow off-duty and retired police officers to carry guns in schools is finding support in the Wisconsin Legislature. The measure cleared an Assembly committee earlier this month and the Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing on it for Tuesday. Current state law generally bans people from possessing guns on school grounds as well as within 1,000 feet of school grounds. The prohibition doesn't apply to police officers acting in their official capacity. A bipartisan group of legislators has proposed a bill that would allow off-duty and retired officers to carry guns in schools as well. A more broad proposal last session that allowed anyone to carry concealed weapons on school grounds failed to pass.

Rabbis sound alarm after deadly Sabbath fire in New York

Sun, 03/22/2015 - 6:34pm
MILWAUKEE -- Firefighters today are getting some help from the pulpit. A day after a deadly fire killed seven children in Brooklyn, rabbis across the country and here in Milwaukee are urging congregants to ensure fire safety in their homes and synagogues. "There are no words to describe it, it hits very close to home," said Rabbi Yisroel Lein, leader of the Chabad of the East Side congregation. "The first thing I did after [the Sabbath] was turn on my phone and I found out the news, then I checked my smoke alarm." Investigators confirm the seven children, ages five to 15, were all of the same Orthodox Jewish family and were trapped inside their home as the fire raged overnight. Fire marshals believe a hot plate malfunctioned and sparked the blaze; traditional Jews sometimes leave on hot plates through the Sabbath to warm food since they refrain from using electricity. The home also had only one working smoke detector in the basement. "Obviously there's no way to say why this has happened or look back," Lein said. "But clearly it makes you think a little about things we do and how we do them." Two other family members survived the Brooklyn blaze -- the mother and her eldest daughter -- and they remain in critical condition. The father was away at a conference.
