Opening weekend of deer hunt called a success, number of does up sharply

Despite a foggy start and unseasonably warm weather conditions, Langlade County hunters registered 1,416 deer—15 percent more than last year—over the opening weekend of the gun deer season. Department of Natural Resources wildlife technician Eric Borchert said that 813 bucks were registered, a 2 percent decline from 2011, but 603 does were harvested, up 50 percent. Langlade Hospital celebrates grand opening

Joined by Canadian representatives of the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph and health care dignitaries from across the region, Langlade Hospital officials clipped the ribbon marking the grand opening of its new facility Friday. The ceremony, the culmination of two years of planning and construction, drew an overflow crowd for an outside ceremony, followed by remarks in the hospital conference room and a Mass celebrated by Bishop Robert Morneau. As funds grow short, Salvation Army ramps up its bell-ringing campaign

Salvation Army bell ringers are appearing outside Langlade County retailers today, and its not a moment too soon for the organizations that rely on community support. Despite a record-setting 2011 campaign, funds for assistance were exhausted one month short of the new fiscal year, according to Michelle Arrowood, executive director of Langlade County’s AVAIL organization. Search for missing Crandon man continues

The search continues for a missing Crandon man. The Forest County Sheriff's Department is helping family and friends of 44-year-old Christopher Leach try to find him after being reported missing on Monday. Leach is described as a white male with a beard and mustache. He frequently wears a baseball cap, but it is unknown if he has one on him currently. He was last seen in his truck, a silver Nissan Frontier with Wisconsin license plate number AK-1756. Full Story: Country 106

Successes close local wolf zones

Wisconsin is closing the wolf hunt season in two zones that blanket the northeastern part of the state, including Langlade County, after quotes have been reached. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said it was closing the zones Friday when hunting and trapping hours end. The quota for Zone 2, which encompasses the far northeastern corner of the state, was set at 20 wolves and the decision to close it came after 18 were killed. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Council approves dog playground in the city

Dogs will have an opportunity to play off-leash and youngsters a chance to romp on some new playground equipment following action by the Antigo Common Council Wednesday. With Tim Kassis presiding in the absence of Mayor Bill Brandt, aldermen worked through a straightforward and light agenda, focusing largely on improvements to the community’s recreational facilities. White Lake to celebrate new facility

One year and 11 days after referendum voters resoundingly said yes to improved facilities, the White Lake school district will hold a grand opening ceremony for its new recreation center. The project—which may have seemed improbable to some considering the obstacles facing tiny school districts—was approved by 60 percent of voters who said yes to a $3 million referendum question on Nov. 8, 2011. On Nov. 6, voters in the Antigo school district handed the board of education a mandate. But speakers at Tuesday’s board of education meeting disagreed exactly what it is. One week after its elementary building plan was defeated by almost 60 percent of voters, the Antigo school board hosted a special meeting to map out a future course for education. Creation of a dog park on the city’s northwest side, funded in part through an anonymous donation of $30,000, highlights the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting of the Antigo Common Council. With the 2013 budget completed and approved, the council will work through a straightforward and light agenda, focusing largely on improvements to the community’s recreational facilities. County Board supports study that may lead to police-sheriff merger

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors held its last meeting before the holiday season heats up today handling its business quickly.

With Ron Nye filling in for board chair, Dave Solin, the big item on the agenda, participation in a study with the city of Antigo for possible consolidating of the police and sheriff’s department. The measure breezed through the roll-call vote unanimously.

Bryant man gets prison for sex crimes

Langlade County Judge Fred Kawalski described the case as both difficult and sad in sentencing a Bryant man today to an 18-month term in the Wisconsin state prison system. The punishment for Robert J. Pavek, 78, of W6081 Highway 64 was ordered in connection with his illegal contact with three young girls. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

School board to eye post-vote options

With consolidation of district elementary schools looming in just six months, the Antigo school board will go back to the drawing board Tuesday. The board will meet in special session at 7 p.m. in the Middle School library, with plans for a wide-open discussion of the recent elementary referendum defeat and further options. By a 59 percent to 41 percent margin, voters in the district last week rejected a proposal to construct a new central elementary school and close all seven current facilities. County Board Tuesday: Police, sheriff merger brewing

The Langlade County Board of Supervisors will hold its November meeting a week early, getting together on Tuesday on the lower level of the Safety Building.

County Clerk Kathy Jacob said the shift was made because some members of the panel were interested in deer hunting and other activities in the week leading to Thanksgiving.

The session starts at 9 a.m.
