Icy conditions foul roads, close schools

Freezing rain across Antigo and much of northcentral Wisconsin has closed schools, detoured highway traffic and canceled Gov. Scott Walker’s trip to Wausau. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation temporarily closed Highway 47 in both directions Tuesday morning between Neopit and the Langlade County line because of ice. And a section of Highway B from Highway 45 to North Shore Road within the Bass Lake area of the county was closed following an assortment of accidents. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

School board to eye adding another sport to competitive mix Tuesday

The Antigo school board may be ready to add an additional varsity sport at the high school level. The board will convene Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the regular January session and a main agenda item will be approving a request from the Antigo Penguins Swim Club to have swimming become a WIAA high school sport. REGI tries, but can't save rare Golden Eagle

An adult male Golden Eagle, a rare sight in Wisconsin, has died at Raptor Education Group, Inc., bringing a new light to concerns about lead poisoning in wildlife and humans. “It’s sad,” Marge Gibson, executive director of REGI, which is located southeast of Antigo said. “It appeared that he was improving, but unfortunately he couldn’t overcome the effects of the lead.” Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Trolley maker goes 'green' with new model

Crandon-based Hometown Trolley has been awarded a $2.6 million contract with the city of Alpena to build new fully-electric trolleys over the next two years. Alpena was awarded a grant under the Clean Fuels Act to utilize a platform that did not burn fossil fuels, which provided the opportunity for Hometown Trolley to market their innovative new vehicle. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas, Antigo native, deeply involved in the Derby

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, a native of Antigo, is front and center on the Kentucky Derby trail, long after many handicappers had concluded his best days were past. Three-year-old colts trained by Lukas, 77, swept the two major Kentucky Derby preps this past week, early indications that the horses could be making a charge toward the first Saturday in May and the Run for the Roses. Boys, Girls Club dance fund-raiser Saturday

Enjoy some unique, sensational and serious fun Saturday night at “Antigo Thinks You Can Dance,” a local competition tailored after the popular television show. The third annual show, a benefit for the Boys and Girls Cub of Langlade County, will feature a mix of near-professional and local dancers performing beginning at 7 p.m. at North Star Lanes. Dillon's Fund Gas Pump

Brian Southworth and Jerad Servais spent Wednesday morning pumping gas for anyone who would let them, working to earn tips they plan to donate to Dillon's Fund. On Memorial Day, Dillon Sus was in a car accident along Highway 64 and Hill Road in Antigo. He and 4 other high school students were heading north and went through a stop sign when their car was hit. Two passengers died and Dillon was paralyzed after being thrown from the car. Full Story: WSAW

Brickners preparing for big RV show, sale Saturday, Sunday at Antigo site

The guys and gals at Brickners are going through their extensive stock of recreational vehicles for an open house set for Saturday and Sunday. Jamie Zalewski, a longtime Brickner sales representative and Jeff Schuster, who leads the RV department, said there are plenty of things to see this year at the annual event. Chill disrupts schools, other activities

Dangerously cold weather conditions across the northwoods shuttered schools, canceled special events, and sent people accustomed to a bit of winter chill indoors. With temperatures diving to near 20 degrees below zero, and wind chills even more extreme this morning, classes were closed in Antigo, Elcho and White Lake schools and across large swaths of the state. Sheriff's department here joins in helping deputies affected by Sandy

Wisconsin is far from hurricane central but a recent contribution by law enforcement officers, including those here, is making a difference in the lives of those affected by one of the largest East Coast storms on record. In cooperation with a state-wide disaster relief effort called Sheriff’s Adopting Sheriff’s, the Langlade County Sheriff’s Office recently raised $1,400 to send to the Union County Sheriff’s employees in New Jersey who were jolted by Hurricane Sandy. Service here offers low-cost spay, neuter

The Langlade County Humane Society is teaming with The Fix Is In, a Rhinelander-based animal welfare group, to offer low-cost, spay and neuter clinics on a monthly basis in Antigo. According to Karla Ortman, founder and director of The Fix Is In Inc., the low-cost service was expanded to Antigo two days a month starting in November, but adequate numbers of patients are needed to continue the program. State, local sources say stalking a major problem, month being noted

January is National Stalking Awareness Month, and with stalking playing a part in recent high-profile domestic violence homicides in Wisconsin, advocates here say there is urgency to raising awareness about this dangerous behavior. “Locally, stalking is a routine occurrence in many of the abuse cases we see,” Michele Arrowood, executive director of AVAIL Inc., an advocacy agency for victims of domestic and sexual abuse, said. “Law enforcement does an excellent job of recognizing and trying to address the issue; however, some stalking behaviors stop short of being criminal activity or even obvious harassment, which limits the remedies available to victims.” Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Big troubles come with real cold spell

Northwoods residents are bracing for a true blast of winter air. After a relatively mild winter to date, the National Weather Service says strong winds and plummeting temperatures will make for a bitterly cold combination this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
