Pelican Lake man jailed for seventh drunk driving count

A Pelican Lake man was arrested early Sunday for his seventh offense of drunken driving. A Langlade County sheriff’s deputy stopped the 53-year old motorist in the vicinity of Highway 45 and Bluebird Road for a speeding violation shortly before 1:30 a.m. The deputy noted that he could smell an odor of intoxicants but the driver denied he had been drinking. A preliminary breath test suggested differently and he was taken into custody. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Pickerel's winter tradition continues

Swimmers and snowmobilers continued a tradition that dates to the mid-1980s on Saturday—the annual jump-in at Jerry Schuh’s Sportsmen’s Lodge on Pickerel Lake. The event has morphed from a chilly swim enjoyed by a few hearty members of the Menasha Polish Polar Bears Club who had cottages on Pickerel Lake to a full-fledged community festival and fund-raiser for the Pearson-Pickerel Lions Cub. Acts booked, fair opens in 165 days

The 2013 Langlade County Fair is just 165 days away, with a full schedule of acts already booked and a growing reputation to uphold. Members of the exposition’s governing board, including coordinator Rhonda Klement, recently returned from the 90th annual state Association of Fairs convention held in Wisconsin Dells, sharing ideas, booking acts and, in general, networking with other fair representatives. Most members of 1994-1995 Robins will be here for 'retro night'

The Antigo High School sports has a rich history of successes that span close to a century. And one of them was the school’s 1994-1995 basketball team, who will be part of the program at the Friday night game against Ashwaubanon. Antigo woman cited for doping young girl

An Antigo woman has been arrested on allegations she and another female injected a syringe filled with liquid morphine into the arm of a 12-year old girl. Nicole L. Bessert, 20, was arrested over the weekend for the January assault and on Monday, she appeared before Langlade County Judge Fred Kawalski on four criminal counts. They include physical abuse of a child, false imprisonment, contributing to the delinquency of a child and intimidation of a victim. Three of the counts are felonies. August trial date set in Hunter drug sale case

An Antigo man charged in connection with an investigation into a wide-spread drug ring will wait until this summer before taking his case to trial. An Aug. 14 hearing was set in Langlade County Circuit Court Monday for 34-year old John M. Hunter of 336 Watson St. A final pre-trial meeting on the case was scheduled for July 22. Police quickly nab suspects in vandalism at city warming site

Capt. Nate Musolff urged parents to keep an eye on their youngsters today after the Antigo Police Department nabbed an adult and a boy, 13, for vandalism at the shelter building at Peaceful Valley Park. The boy defecated in a trash barrel in the building and then dumped it on the floor. Police identified them and are pursuing legal action. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Fisherman has a good day on the water, but not in court

A summer fishing trip cost a local man a whole lot more than the cost of bait Tuesday. In July, Cedar M. Kennedy, 28, of 204 Gowan Road was ticketed by the Department of Natural Resources for possessing fish over the allowed daily limit. Officials said he caught 18 large mouth bass in Rabe Lake near Polar. The limit is five. On Tuesday, the ticket made its way before Judge Fred Kawalski. Punishment for the crime was $885.75. Allergen left off label leads to liver pate recall

A labeling mistake led to the recall of about 4,500 pounds of liver pate products made by Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats, a national retailer based in Wittenberg. The recall, announced Saturday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, was issued because the product contains the milk protein sodium caseinate, an allergen, but the label fails to mention this ingredient. Venerable Wolf River Lodge to be razed

The Wolf River Lodge property, which sprawls along a section of the wild waterway north of Langlade, will remain intact, but its venerable lodge will not. On the eve of an open house designed to spur sales of individual pieces of the property, the nearby Silver Birch Ranch sealed a deal to purchase the 11-acre complex and keep it intact for future generations. State highway map has whimsical touch plus local road realignment

The Highway 64 bypass of Antigo is among the features included in the 2013-2014 state highway map, which promotes having fun while traveling in Wisconsin. The map was produced by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in cooperation with the Department of Tourism. Classic Cruise snowmobile outing set for Saturday in Langlade County

Vintage sleds will mix with some of the latest models at the 10th annual Classic Cruise hosted by the Deerbrook Bridge Runners on Saturday. “All the trails will be open as of Saturday morning and we’re going to have a great time,” Mike McDougal, event organizer, said. “We’re expecting a couple hundred sleds.” Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Carl F. Becker, violin maker, dies at age 93

Carl F. Becker, a resident of Chicago and Pickerel Lake, has died at the age of 93. The respected instrument maker, part of a five-generation dynasty of luthiers, had a great influence on U.S. violin making. A history of Carl Becker and Son, Ltd., of Chicago, notes that he was “born with a fiddle in his hands, violins in his blood...and a chip off the old block.” Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Doug Knol will retire in June as Middle School principal

Antigo Middle School Principal Doug Knol is retiring at the conclusion of this year. The board of education accepted the resignation of the popular Knol at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday. It takes effect on June 30. Knol was named Middle School principal following the retirement of Jiles Cole in 1995. He previously had served as Cole’s assistant. Full Story: Antigo Daily Journal

Antigo area residents upset as electrical power goes out for a hour

In times of weather emergencies, such as the power outage which affected a widespread area of Antigo this morning, the 911 dispatch center at the Langlade County Safety Building becomes the host for a hot bed of activity. Wisconsin Public Service put the outage total at 2,700 customers, indicating that the problem lied with an issue at a substation on Antigo’s east side. Downtown revitalization gets a boost with agency's designation

Antigo’s downtown revitalization received a boost this month, after it was among 20 cities selected by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation for the new “Connect Communities” program.
