17 year-olds accused of non-violent crimes may no longer be tried as adults

MADISON - Non-violent 17-year-old offenders in Wisconsin would no longer be treated as adults in the justice system under a bipartisan proposal up for a hearing in the Legislature. The bill before the Assembly's Corrections Committee would reverse a 1996 law requiring all 17-year-olds, regardless of the offense, to be treated as adults. Full Story: WJFW

Students remove Buckthorn plants to create educational trail

RHINELANDER - Weeding sounds like a chore, but today 7th and 8th graders had fun weeding the woods. The science classes at Rhinelander's James Williams Middle School spent time removing Buckthorn. Composting lunch teaches valuable lessons

MERRILL - For most of us, a banana peel or apple core looks like garbage. But some elementary schoolers in Merrill see those kinds of scraps a little differently. “We live in a throwaway society,” says Kristen Novitch, a teacher at Washington Elementary. Nicolet College EMT and EMS responders pass certification exams

RHINELANDER - Most of the time, going to school means lots of books. That's true for EMT and EMS students at Nicolet College, but their program focuses more on practical experience than book learning.
