Minnesota seeks farmers' help on nitrates in water

WORTHINGTON, MN - As Minnesota communities spend millions of dollars to remove nitrate contamination from their drinking water, state officials say it's time for farmers to do more to prevent the problem.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture plans to use new rules to be more aggressive in getting farmers to limit the amount of fertilizer chemicals leaching into groundwater.

Veterinarian helps fight pig virus

MILWAUKEE - Shoppers have seen double-digit increases in bacon prices in the past year as a virus that causes deadly diarrhea in baby pigs sweeps through U.S. hog farms.

Wisconsin state veterinarian Dr. Paul McGraw recently served on a federal task force charged with developing a plan to fight the disease known as porcine epidemic diarrhea and spoke to The Associated Press about his work.
