Snow in the forecast sets Kettlebowl opening

With a bit of new snow in the forecast, along with a return to more seasonable temperatures, Kettlebowl ski hill will open for action on Sunday.

The family fun hill, located northeast of Antigo off Highway 52, will be open for skiing and snowboarding from noon to 4 p.m.

“We feel that with the temperatures predicted and fresh snow in the forecast, we’ll be ready to open,” Gordie Schofield of the Langlade County Ski Club, said. “It will be early season conditions.”

Crestwood volunteer gets a payback for Christmas from the students he serves

Clarence “Butch” Duchac has guided hundreds of youngsters on field trips, tutored them on the intricacies of modern mathematics and taught them vanishing northwoods crafts during his time as a volunteer at Crestwood Elementary School.

Now, during the Christmas season, children at the school are shepherding him back.

Third, fourth and fifth graders from Crestwood recently trekked the short distance to Duchac’s home to decorate a “Tree of Hope,” creating a festive reminder of the holidays and all good things while Duchac is facing treatment for lung cancer.

With regret, gratitude, school board accepts Mary Jo Filbrandt resignation

“With regret” and “deep gratitude for their years of service,” the Antigo school board Tuesday accepted the resignations of Mary Jo Filbrandt, director of business services, and the Dr. Janene Beck-Hafner, director of pupil services.

The action came at the regular December session, which also included planning for maintenance projects, approval of new course offerings at the high school, and purchase of new musical instruments.

Beck-Hafner, originally a instrumental music instructor, has been a school district employee for 13 1/2 years, first as associate principal at the high school and moving to central office in 2006 as pupil services director.

Governor Walker orders 'Operation Santa' today

Governor Scott Walker directed the Wisconsin National Guard and Wisconsin Emergency Management to once again provide assistance for a special holiday traveler tonight, as he makes his annual rounds through the Badger State.

“This is a mission we look forward to every year,” Governor Walker said. “By tasking the Wisconsin National Guard and Wisconsin Emergency Management with providing food and water for the reindeer, along with hot cocoa and weather updates for Santa Claus, we are doing our part to help the jolly old elf deliver presents to all the good boys and girls in Wisconsin.”

Major General Don Dunbar, Wisconsin adjutant general, said the Wisconsin National Guard and Wisconsin Emergency Management are up to the task.

Christmas Jars, a new tradition, have arrived here sharing a bit of Yule wealth

Christmas Jars, a new holiday tradition sweeping the nation, have arrived in Antigo.

Last week, an anonymous gentleman arrived on the porch of Mark and Christie Powell’s Fourth Avenue home, bearing a package for seven-year-old Molly.

“He said it had been delivered by mistake to his Sixth Avenue home and asked if Molly lived here,” Christie, said. “He said it was for her.”

Big crowd expected for dinner on Christmas at North Star facility

One of the biggest cooking assignments of the year will certainly be underway on Wednesday.

Mary Schmoll and Mary Ellen Draeger, who have been at the helm of the community dinner for Christmas for 14 years, are preparing for a real crowd.

“The number has gone up just about every year,” Schmoll said today.

Spring election looks like it might be exciting here

A contested election for city of Antigo mayor, plus at least one seat on the Antigo school board will highlight spring balloting in Langlade County.

With only a few days left to circulate nomination papers or declare non-candidacy—and with caucuses looming in area towns—the ballots are beginning to take shape for the spring general election on April 7.

Depending on location, that ballot will include races for mayor, aldermen, school board, and town board supervisors.

Antigo, Bike, Ski Club will continue Gartzke breakfast tradition

The Antigo Bike and Ski Club will continue its annual tradition of serving waffles and more at Gartzke Flowage on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nick Salm will be preparing Belgian waffles. The club will provide maple syrup, some fruit toppings, coffee, plates, cups and utensils. Others are encouraged to bring some favorite toppings, fruit, juice, or sausages to share.

“Most importantly, bring family and friends,” Joe Hermolin, a club member and breakfast participant, said. “ This is a great after-Christmas event for families from the area and visitors for the holidays.”

School board losing several of its key administrators, staff

The Antigo school district is losing two veteran administrators.

At its meeting Tuesday, the board will act on the retirement of Mary Jo Filbrandt, director of business services, and the resignation of Dr. Janene Beck-Hafner, director of pupil services.

The board may also approve a proposal to hire an outside media consultant to create a “brand” for the school district and act on a variety of other matters at the session, slated to begin at 7 p.m. in the media tech room at the high school.

Antigo man arrested for fire in Marathon County, his workplace

An Antigo man is in Marathon County custody today awaiting formal charges after he torched his place of business before leading law officers on a high speed chase, ultimately leading to his arrest.

The 39-year-old was taken into custody early Sunday morning in Shawano County after he drove his vehicle into a ditch along Highway 153.

He had earlier taken up refuge inside a warehouse at Bushman Trucking in Galloway where he had worked as a mechanic.

Complex Park View renovation advances

Just in time for Christmas, nine residents of the Park View Apartments complex are getting settled into their renovated apartments.

“It’s wonderful,” Wendy Carter said as she unpacked boxes and totes in her fourth-floor corner unit. “It seems much more spacious and the view over the walkway is the best in Antigo.”

The relocation is part of a multi-phased project at Park View, Antigo’s “high-rise” complex, that is completely revamping the structure.

Make a donation to Salvation Army kettle Monday, and group gets double the money

Those nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars stuffed into Salvation Army red kettles on Monday will double in value.

An anonymous donor has stepped forward to match up to $1,000 in donations from Antigo shoppers on Monday, making it a perfect opportunity to make a last-minute holiday contribution to support local charitable causes.

Bill Kelly, volunteer coordinator, said would like to take full advantage of the $1,000 match by having every bell ringer shift filled on Monday.

Skijoring demonstrated by mushers in Minocqua

Man’s best friend is good for more than playing fetch.

Area mushers Melissa and Keith Omernick and Rachel Colbath, who are members of the Wisconsin Trailblazers Sled Dog Club, demonstrated the sport of skijoring at the Minocqua’s Winter Park ski trails on a foggy Saturday.

Despite the unseasonable and damp conditions, several spectators stopped by to harness up and enjoy cross country skiing behind a dog. The event was part of Demo Days at Winter Park ski trails west of Minocqua on Squirrel Lake Road south of Highway 70.

Airport's new snow machinery ready to go

Langlade County Airport Manager Josh Walker may be hoping for snow.

With the help of a $192,574 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, the county has purchased several massive pieces of new snow removal equipment.

“We’ve already used everything except the broom,” Walker said Thursday, inspecting the heavy machinery, and noting just a tiny bit of wear on one of the snowplows.

Remington Foundation has long record of funding groups, latest is firefighters

When people in this part of Wisconsin were buying Texaco oils and fuel products and Pontiac automobiles, no one dreamed that the man selling them would one day be one of this area’s leading philanthropists.

Before his death in April, 2010, Elwyn “Al” Remington established the Remington Foundation and distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships, an assortment of community projects and the local aquatic center.

Since his death, the foundation, now headed by a board led by his longtime friend, Jeanne Lucht, has continued the philanthropy unabated.

Driver in crash fined over $1,000, he also faces criminal charges

A Bryant man facing criminal charges as the result of a single vehicle crash last month was found in default on various traffic citations after he failed to make a scheduled appearance Tuesday in Langlade County Circuit Court.

The citations filed against 24-year-old Andres L. Vasquez were among a collection of tickets which rolled across the bench of Reserve Judge Glenn Hartley.

Six tickets, carrying a price tag of over $1,000, were issued after Vasquez rolled his vehicle along Highway S in the town of Norwood. He suffered a facial injury and after initial transport to Langlade Hospital, he was airlifted to Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

Santa shares his stories at museum

Santa Claus is as old as Christmas and as young as the gleam in a toddler’s eye.

The Jolly Old Elf is inviting youngsters to visit him at the Langlade County Historical Society Museum through Sunday, sharing stories of life with Rudolph and the elves at the North Pole, trolling for cookies and milk under the balsams on Christmas Eve, and reminding children to be nice, not naughty or risk getting coal in their stockings.

“I bet three out of four households in Antigo have a photo of me,” Santa says, suggesting that he has been visiting with three or even four generations of families since he made Antigo his wintertime headquarters over 40 years ago, “I love it, every minute of it.”

County Board welcomes new veterans officer on Tuesday

The Langlade County Board passed the master plan for compensation and benefits for its employees and approved a part-time employee for the Department of Social Services through 2015 at its December meeting Tuesday.

Dale Oatman, the retiring Langlade County veterans service officer, introduced his replacement, John Zenkovich.

Supervisors also heard a stunning report on health hazards, presented by health department director, Ron Barger.

Salvation Army kettle has $1,200 gold coin

With a solid “thunk” into a red bucket, Langlade County’s Salvation Army campaign got a $1,200 boost Monday.

Sometime between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., an anonymous donor placed a $20 gold coin into the collection bucket outside Mills Fleet Farm, during the shifts of either Geno McKenna or Scot Peterson, both longtime bell-ringers.

The coin, in exceptional condition, was discovered during the evening’s count by Cavan Kelly, and quickly identified as a Saint-Gaudens double eagle, produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1922.

Highway 55 closed down by river water

With flooding getting worse instead of better, crews have closed state highway 47/55 between Go-Around Road and Rabbit Ridge Road in Keshena.

Traffic is being be detoured via Go-Around Road, BIA Route 321, County VV, BIA Route 19, and Rabbit Ridge Road.

The Wolf River is breaching the highway near the intersection of Menominee County VV, with high water caused by a combination of a quick snow melt, overnight rain and ice jams.

Drawing of Hatley bank robber released today

Marathon County officials are releasing a sketch of a suspect in a summertime bank robbery in hopes of shaking loose some leads.

Sheriff Scott Parks released the sketch this morning of the man suspected in an August robbery at Banner Bank in Hatley. The sheriff said that he hoped someone will recognize the man and be able to provide information about him.

The robbery occurred at approximately 2:41 p.m. on Aug. 6.

Wolf ice jam causes some flooding

Menominee County officials have scheduled a press conference for later this afternoon to discuss progress in battling flood waters caused by a rapid snow melt and ice jams on the Wolf River.

A flood warning remains in effect for Keshena with the Wolf River water levels rising again in the area. Ice jams on the river are causing minor flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

“We are still assessing the situation, continuously,” Ben Warrington, Menominee Tribal emergency management coordinator, said.

Langlade County has a strong economic development force

Antigo may be in the driver’s seat as the economic engine revs up across the northwoods.

A rare three-agency shuffle has placed Langlade County residents—all women—in charge of public entities guiding development efforts at the local and regional level. Angie Close is now the director of the Langlade County Economic Development Board while her old boss, Chris Berry, has assumed duties as regional account manager for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. And Angi Schreiber, who has worked with Berry and Close on a variety of projects, has been named executive director of the Grow North Regional Economic Development Board.

Personnel, pay issues on board agenda

Dale Oatman, the retiring county veterans service officer, will be back on the floor of the Langlade County Board Tuesday to introduce his replacement, John Zenkovich, to the supervisors.

The session starts at 9 a.m. on the lower level of the Safety Building with plenty of seating for the public.

The consent agenda, which is not discussed, includes election of Zenkovich to the position.

Christmas mystery tree returns to Elcho for another year, along 45

A Christmastime mystery has returned.

The little Elcho Christmas tree, which has been decorated anonymously every holiday season since 2005 emerged this week on Highway 45 south of town, a few hundred feet north of the 2013 model.

The only clue to the identity of the decorator, or decorators, are the footprints that ring the little evergreen located just off the east side of the roadway. Someone must know the perpetrator of the delightful caper, but no one is talking.

Santa coming to town, he plans to linger for a while meeting children and adults

Santa Claus is coming to town, and he’s going to stay awhile.

After an appearance at the Christmas parade earlier this month, Santa will return to Antigo on Saturday for the fifth annual Breakfast with Santa hosted by the Langlade County Boys & Girls Club.

The event will run from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Elks Lodge. All youths ages 11 and under will receive a Christmas present, get to see Santa and enjoy a free breakfast with their family.

22nd Lights of Love ceremony set in Elcho

The 22nd annual Lights of Love luminary service, a memorial tribute held in the midst of the holiday season, will be held Monday in Elcho.

The event, a fund-raiser for the Elcho School Scholarship Fund, will take place at 7 p.m. along the sidewalks that ring the Elcho School. It is being held in conjunction with the high school Christmas concert.

Luminaries purchased prior to the ceremony will be placed along the sidewalk, lighting the route to the school. Luminaries may also be purchased that evening. The luminaries can all be taken home to memorialize loved ones during the holidays.

Council approves walks, firefighter pact

With a bit of dissension, the Antigo Common Council Wednesday took the initial steps toward repairing sidewalks downtown, and adding a new link to the city’s northside walking trail.

At its regular monthly meeting, aldermen voted 5-3 to levy special assessments for driveway approaches as part of new sidewalks on the west side of Langlade Road from the 900 to 1000 block.

The matter will now moved forward to a public hearing.
