A pair of Langlade County men accused of being too drunk to legally drive were among an assortment of arrests made here this weekend.

Packer faithful make a lively statement

To paraphrase: You ain’t got a thing if you ain’t got that bling!

While Green Bay Packer faithful will be covered in wool and down at Lambeau Field on Sunday, millions more will be watching the divisional playoff against the Dallas Cowboys at home, parties or their favorite hangout.

And while much of the attire will revolve around green and gold sweatshirts and T-shirts, there will likely be plenty of sparkles, spangles and rhinestones.

Memories of Ice Bowl are sharp here

As Larry Ourada puts it, Lambeau Field would have to “hold 4 million people” to accommodate everyone who claims to have been at the Dec. 31, 1967 Ice Bowl, perhaps the most acclaimed game in NFL history.

Or, as Kay and Roger Doran, say, “it was like Woodstock, everyone says they were there.”

Dallas is paying its first postseason visit to Green Bay Sunday since losing 21 to 17 on Bart Starr’s quarterback sneak with 13 seconds remaining on that frigid day 47 years ago. And while many are hoping for a repeat of that 1967 classic, those who were there know it can never be replicated.

After health scare, Czaja ready for second term as state representative

State Representative Mary Czaja was sworn into office during the inaugural ceremonies held Monday at the State Capitol, an event that a year ago could have seemed rather unlikely.

The Irma Republican, whose 35th Assembly District includes Antigo and all of western Langlade County, enters her second term after completing nearly a year of treatments for a Stage 3 breast cancer, a disease she thought she had beat a decade earlier.

She split much of her spring and summer between working for her constituents and undergoing treatments, but avoided the rigors of a re-election campaign when no one came forward to challenge her for her seat.

Journal welcomes local memories of 'ice bowl'

Remember the Ice Bowl? We bet many Green Bay Packer fans from Antigo do.

As the Packers prepare for a rematch with the Dallas Cowboys of that 1967 classic, the Antigo Daily Journal is asking readers to share their personal Ice Bowl experiences. Maybe you were at the game, or watched it with friends in an unusual location. Or maybe something from that day just created an indelible memory.

The idea was born when we learned that a local couple had pictures from their attendance at that ‘67 game and we thought there may be more memories in our community.

Interesting facts: Another big winter taking shape for snowy owls in state

It’s looking like another big winter for snowy owls in Wisconsin.

Numerous sightings have been reported of the big birds staging their annual mass migration south from Canada, including reports from across Langlade County.

“Four are gracing the landscape in Langlade County,” Marge Gibson, executive director of the Antigo-based Raptor Education Group Inc., said. “If you go to take photos please keep a respectful distance as they hunt during the day and human interference distracts them for hunting and in fact may keep their prey away from them. In their natural environment they eat lemmings, which is a rodent. Wisconsin does not have lemmings, but many other rodents including mice, rats and rabbits.”

Figure jailed last year in bath salt seizure formally charged

Criminal charges have been filed against an Antigo man at the crux of one of the area’s largest drug seizures in recent history.

Bail was set at $2,000 cash in Langlade County Circuit Court Monday for 29-year-old Anthony Flasch whose North Avenue home late last year was the target of a search by law officers on the hunt for items associated with a synthetic and hallucinogenic drug known as bath salts.

The actual salts, pure in form and seized with the assistance of the U.S. Post Office, had an estimated value of $25,000. Typically “cut” with other drugs and sold in one gram increments between $100 and $150 a pop for individual use, the street value of the substance jumps to an estimated $75,000.

Antigo area caught in a spell of real cold

Antigo crackled with subzero temperatures again today, conditions that were great for making ice but dismal for skaters wanting to enjoy the rinks.

At noontime temperatures in the city hovered at five degrees below zero and conditions are expected to remain in the subzero range through the end of the work week, perhaps surging to the single digits on Thursday and again Saturday.

The winds are only making it worse, with chills as low as 25 to 35 below this morning and even more severe conditions possible tonight, with indices as low as 30 to 40 below during the overnight hours. The National Weather Service will likely issue wind chill advisories and/or warnings during this period and, after a day in the classroom today, it’s likely schools will once again remain shuttered on Wednesday.

A deep chill is to be expected in northern Wisconsin during January, and in 2015 it came early.

It's time to hunker down those resolutions

By NICKOLE L. SIEGMAN
Senior dietetics student at UW-Stout

A popular New Year’s resolution is to lose weight or to eat healthier. For many these resolutions are difficult to maintain and are abandoned within three to six months after January.

The best (and healthiest) way to lose weight is to eat healthier and increase physical activity. To be successful you should start slow and make changes that are maintainable. The reason diets and extreme exercise routines don’t work for most people is because they are seen as temporary actions to lose weight. Unfortunately as soon as a diet is abandoned and vigorous workouts become less frequent people often gain back any weight that was lost, sometimes more. For lasting health and fitness you have to get in the mindset of not dieting but making lifestyle changes.

CoVantage Credit Union returns $1.7 million to its savers, borrowers

Antigo-based CoVantage Credit Union has returned $1.7 million in patronage to its borrowing and saving members.

Like prior years’ patronage, there are two components—a savings bonus, which provides an additional dividend and is based on total interest earned on select deposit accounts during the year, and a loan interest rebate, which returns a portion of the interest paid on qualifying loans.

CoVantage has provided the savings bonus for the past seven years, and the loan interest rebate has been provided since 1981. The $1.7 million provided for 2014 is nearly $100,000 more than the year before.

Brutal winter leads top stories of a busy 2014

Langlade County was roiled by Mother Nature in 2014, and that battering—rather than decisions by developers or voters—was the easy selection as the Antigo Daily Journal’s top story of the year.

The story of the year traditionally refers to a human success or failure of the past year, often with ramifications for the future, but this year’s selection is a simple salute to the power of nature.

Problems started early in Antigo, with brutal temperatures sinking the frost deep into the ground and freezing and bursting water mains across the community.

On a perfect football day in Green Bay, ADJ sports editor finds area residents

It was a perfect football day at Lambeau Field Sunday.

From sunny if a bit blustery conditions for tailgating, to the chants of MVP rocking the stadium, a better ending of the regular NFL football season could not have been written Sunday in Green Bay.

The only hiccup—a few still moments in the stands when quarterback Aaron Rodgers writhed on the ground clutching his re-injured calf muscle, shortly before halftime. There were loud cheers and chants calling for Rodgers to be named the league’s most valuable player as he walked off the field, and then there were cheers again when he returned from the locker room early in the third quarter and hobbled back in the huddle.

“We already have a rink dthere,” Sarah Repp, the city’s director of parks and recreation, said. “We could create an entire skating hub, connected by ice paths.”
