A look back at Gov. Walker's political career
Governor Scott Walker announced he is running for president Monday.
But did you know he first ran for political office 25 years ago? It was then that he lost his campaign to Congresswoman Gwen Moore. He ran again in 1993 and hasn't lost since.
Winning the Assembly's 14th district in a special election, the 25-year-old Walker credited his door-to-door campaigning.
"I think the fact that I've worn out two and a half pairs of shoes by doing doors is really the ultimate way to get to the voters," Walker said.
Walker served almost a decade in the Assembly until the Milwaukee County pension scandal in 2002. An unprecedented recall effort chased County Executive Tom Ament from office.
Walker ran for that spot and won, bringing tax freezes and conservative politics to the county courthouse.
In 2006 he briefly entertained a run for governor, but yielded to then Congressman Mark Green.
Four years later, Walker was back. And this time went the distance.
The honeymoon was short. The governor's signature accomplishment: the collective bargaining bill that plunged the state into months of protests and ultimately led to his recall.
But Walker beat it, becoming the first governor to ever survive a recall election, propelling him to victory once again in 2014.
