Mayor Barrett promotes peace on Ceasefire Sabbath

Sun, 05/17/2015 - 1:30pm
MILWAUKEE - Mayor Tom Barrett visited several churches Sunday to promote peace. He wants to reach as many people as possible. “In particular in low income areas we’re seeing an increase in violence and we have to have as many people as we can be part of this effort to reach out and reduce the violence," said Barrett. The mayor said the people going to church are not the ones he's worried about. "[Churchgoers] weren't out at a bar at 2 a.m., but they may have a son or a grandson or a friend who was there and we're seeking their help," said Barrett. "What I'm asking them to do, in particular, is to reach out to the young men, to grab them, to let them know they're loved, and make sure they're not turning to violence. Because it's the young men in particular, young African American men, in the city who are disproportionately the victims of violence. And that's something I want to change." There have been at least 56 homicides so far in Milwaukee, compared with about 20 at the same time last year. "You're going to have naysayers who say, well why do this? I am more determined than ever to seek allies to make this a safer city," said Barrett. The mayor believes people are listening. "The message is very well received. People understand there's a problem and they want to be involved."
