Trick-or-Treat Times 2014

Fri, 10/24/2014 - 9:20am
MADISON - The emerald ash borer has been found in some white fringetrees in Ohio. "This is disturbing because this is the first time we've found emerald ash borer infesting a tree other than an ash tree," explained Andrea Diss-Torrance, the invasive forest pest specialist for the Wisconsin DNR. "This may indicate that there is a possibility that this may move on to other species as well." The white fringetree isn't very common in Wisconsin. "Around here, the fringetree is an unusual tree, and only in the southern part of the state, so I would think that the likelihood is rather small that we would find [the emerald ash borer] on it." Federal researchers are now testing other trees that are related to the ash and the fringetree to see whether the invasive pest has moved onto any other species. "Whether there's a change in the [ash borer] population's behavior, we really can't say at this point," said Diss-Torrance.
