Antares explosion reverberates with students
The explosion of the unmanned Antares rocket headed for the International Space Station yesterday is having consequences beyond just a delay of supplies to the station. The rocket was bringing a variety of flight equipment, food, and computer resources for the crew, but also several experiments, many of them from schools.
The loss of the rocket isn't just a complication for the scientific community; Brian Ewenson, the public education director at Spaceport Sheboygan, said it's a heartbreaking loss for his wife, who teaches in Texas.
"Her students actually were in a competition where they designed and developed experiments that would fly to the International Space Station," he said.
Students at one of the schools Ewenson's wife teaches at designed a protein crystal growth experiment that was on board the unmanned rocket.
"They were live at the school in San Antonio, Texas, to watch the launch," he said.
Ewenson said his wife called after the explosion, and both she and her students were heartbroken.
"Obviously, the students and my wife, being the first time they've ever sent something into space, very, very devastated, with almost a year's long amount of work to get the experiment to Virginia for the launch," he said.
He said while they were devastated, his wife and the class were thankful that no one died or was injured because of the explosion.
Ewenson worked with NASA for 20 years, and he said he understands her students' pain.
"I actually had an experiment on-board the space shuttle of Columbia during the accident," he said.
He said he had the opportunity to re-fly the experiment five years later, and the students may get a similar chance to send their experiments into space - but it could take at least a year, or maybe longer.
"The one thing I told the students and my wife is you got to be resilient," Ewenson said. "Spaceflight is a tough business."

Wisconsin's price tag for November election one of the highest in the nation
Wisconsin ranks in the top 10 states when it comes to raw spending on the Novemeber election.
Ben Wieder, reporter for the Center for Public Intergrity, has been crunching the numbers.
"There's been more than $575 million spent across the country," Wieder said. "And in Wisconsin, there's been around $17 million spent so far."
When you break it down per voter, it works out to about $4 per person. The governor's race represents $3.60 of that total.
Wieder said he thinks that number will grow before election day.
Milwaukee Public Museum unveils huge new solar panel wall
MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Public Museum is flipping the proverbial switch on its new, six story tall solar panel wall on Wednesday.
"This is the largest building-mounted solar array in the Midwest," explained Dennis Kois, the museum's President and CEO. "It takes solar energy and converts it into electricity that the museum can use to power its lights and exhibits."
The solar panels are expected to produce a significant amount of energy.
"It generates the equivalent of keeping several hundred 60-watt bulbs lit every day, all day, for the course of a year."
The solar panels cover the entire facade of the museum. The idea came up after the old white marble facade deteriorated.
"The museum thought it was really important that we demonstrate some leadership on the sustainability issue," said Kois.
It's all part of the museum's larger effort to be greener.
"The museum already has a green roof, which not a lot of people know about. And we're working on converting all of our gallery lighting, which is tens of thousands of lights, over to LED lights."
A brief dedication ceremony gets underway at the Museum at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele, who donated a personal gift for the project, will be on hand, along with museum officials and other donors.
