Why do children who grow up on farms develop fewer allergies?

Tue, 10/28/2014 - 12:57pm
Marshfield Clinic's National Farm Medicine Center is enrolling expectant mothers who live on farms, and those who do not, as part of a new study. Researchers are trying to learn more about why children living on farms develop fewer allergies than children living in other environments. "Farm kids, kids who were raised on active farms, particularly where animals are, tend not to stuffer from many of the allergice conditions that have come to be so common in our population today," said Dr. Matthew Kiefer, Director of the Clinic's National Farm Medicine Center. The study will take up to five years to complete, including observational periods as well as time to analyze the data and observations the researchers gather. It will include a hundred pregnant women who live on farms, as well as another hundred women who don't. "So we're trying to figure out what it is, when it is, and how it happens that these children are getting to this more calm state of allergy," Kiefer said. The National Farm Medicine Center will work with the Asthma and Allergy Research Center at the Univeristy of Wisconsin to track children's development of allergies and respiratory infections for two years, starting before the infants are even born. "We're looking for things like, the kinds of antigens children are exposed to," Kiefer said. "We're looking at the bacterial environment in which they're raised, so we're interested in the organisms that inhabit the environment of the farm." Kiefer said the microbes that exist on farms with livestock are believed to stimulate stronger immune systems. "It appears that children raised with close contact with farm animals tend to not develop that overreaction later in life, and this exposure early in life appears to have somewhat of a calming influence on the immune system," Kiefer said. Kiefer saied researchers are also interested in more than the "why" behind the correlation. "We're really interested in seeing, is there something that we can identify and then use to improve the health of the general population, that we're going to learn from studying these children on farms," Kiefer said.

Polling places searching for workers a week before the election

Tue, 10/28/2014 - 9:46am
MILWAUKEE - We are one week out from election day, and some communities are still searching for poll workers to help out as people cast ballots. Municipal clerks hire and train poll workers. Goverment Accountability Board spokesman Reid Magney said they're typically people who "have an interest in good government, in clean elections." Magney said many poll workers are politically involved. "In Wisconsin, the parties have the ability to nominate poll workers," Magney said. "They will give the municipal clerk a list of people who they want to be poll workers, and the clerk is supposed to work from that list first." Poll worker positions are paid, but the clerks also determine how much they make. If you want to be a poll worker, you must be at least 18, have lived in your community for 28 days and NOT be a felon on supervision. You can contact your local clerk or the elections commission for more information. For more information from the Government Accountability Board, click here.

Honoring fallen soldiers on their final trip home

Tue, 10/28/2014 - 8:56am
MILWAUKEE - A special cart for fallen soldiers is being presented to Southwest Airlines at Mitchell International Airport Tuesday. Richard Kalashian, a Vietnam veteran from Waukesha County, got the idea when he was at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. He saw a flag-draped casket being loaded onto a standard baggage cart. "And that bothered me. I thought they should be shown a little more respect," said Kalashian. Kalashian contacted Southwest Airlines, one of the airlines that transports soldiers' remains. It gave him a cart; he organized the design and labor. "It's red, white and blue. It has a wreath on top that says Freedom Isn't Free. It has Never Forgotten all the way around the cart," said Kalashian. "We have the military eagle on the back door and each branch of the service detailed on the front. It really looks respectful and I feel it will do it justice [as our fallen soldiers] come home. And I think when the grieving family sees it, they'll feel proud." Kalashian is happy with how the cart turned out, but at the same time, he doesn't want it to be needed. "I hope it's never used, to be honest with you, but I know it will be. And I'll feel very proud that they're using this cart." The project has attracted a lot of attention from local media and others who just want to express their gratitude. "I've been getting about two calls every week, approximately, from people thanking me. I've gotten letters from people. It's just amazing how this thing has grown," said Kalashian.
