End of year is the busiest time for some businesses
MILWAUKEE -- Many people take off work between Christmas and New Year's Day. That downtime for some translates to a huge boost in business for others.
A lot of restaurants see an uptick over the holidays.
"People are sick of cooking, people have their families over, they just want to eat out," explained Joey Carioti, general manager of Cranky Al's in Wauwatosa. "Everyone's cooking, you know, for Thanksgiving, Christmas... they don't want to do any more cooking than they have to."
Surgeons, doctors, and dentists also see a big increase in the number of patients that come in.
"It picks up because people want to get procedures that they've probably been putting off all through the year," said Dr. Joe Kohli, an orthopedic surgeon at St. Luke's in Milwaukee. "They want to get it done before the end of the year for any number of reasons, whether it's an insurance reason or they just want to tie things up before the year ends."
Doctors also see a lot of children this time of year.
"College kids who are home or high school kids who have winter break and they want to get their ACL reconstructed or they want to get their shoulder fixed," Dr. Kohli said.
Other businesses that see more customers around the holidays include movie theaters and bowling alleys.

Ideas on where to celebrate New Year's Eve
With 2015 less than 31 hours away, there are plenty of things to do to celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another. How you celebrate it is up to you with a lot of choices across the region.
"It's all about the family, it's all about celebrating New Year's with your family," said Mitchell Park Domes Director Sandy Folaron.
For both young and old, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., the Mitchell Park Domes will be transformed into a dazzling display with a Hawaiian theme.
"There really isn't something that's geared toward the entire family, so this event is unique because of that," Folaron said.
It means parents can spend some family time with the kids before heading out for a night on the town.
"We have a big famous balloon drop. All the kids get their balloons and stomp and then everyone gets to go home," Folaron said.
For the young adult crowd -- several parties are planned along Water Street, Brady Street and North Avenue.
A long time tradition will also continue in Waukesha County. Delafield Brewhaus is preparing for their big party, and about 500 hundred balloons are ready to drop from the ceiling.
"Hats and horns and dancing, we have our DJ coming in at 9 until the last person leaves," said Brad Woerishofer with Delafield Brewhaus.
Best of all -- unlike many parties in southeastern Wisconsin -- it won't cost you anything to get in.
"It's come as you are, no cover charge, there will be drink specials and plenty of room at the bar," Woerishofer said.
