Where to get a free ride on New Year's Eve

Wed, 12/31/2014 - 12:20pm
For many, New Year's Eve is the biggest party night of the year, and that means it's also the most dangerous night to be out on the roads. But there are multiple free ride options, one of them will even come to you. "Over the years, we've done thousands and thousands, over half a million rides have been given free in Milwaukee alone," said Jackie Janz with Milwaukee County Transit. The Miller Lite free ride program is back in Milwaukee and Waukesha for its 27th year -- the Milwaukee County transit buses will open their doors to passengers at no cost and several routes will be extended with service running until 4 a.m. "It's an easy way, especially on the cold nights it's really nice to be able to leave your car at home, jump on the bus and the buses are really toasty warm," Janz said. But if you're not near a bus stop and find yourself out at a bar without a way home, try the Tavern League of Wisconsin and their safe ride program. "It's a good alternative that a lot of folks are not aware of and it's a shame because it is a valuable tool," said Sharon Ward with the Tavern League of Wisconsin. All you have to do is make sure you're at bar, restaurant or hotel that's a member of the Tavern League -- there are more than 200 of them throughout the county. Then just ask the bartender for a voucher -- and up to a $25 cab ride is free.
