Oil Makes A Leap In Price

U-S oil analyst Trilby Lundberg blames a jump in the price of crude oil for the recent rise in gasoline prices. He also says pump-prices could jump up to a dime in the near future, unless there's a significant drop in the price of crude. Here in Wisconsin, the Triple-"A" said the average price was 2.18-and-a-half cent per gallon today for regular unleaded. That's 12-cents higher than a week ago, but 1.09 cheaper than last year at this time. Lundberg says San Francisco has the highest price gas in the lower-48 states, at 2.59 per gallon.

January Auto Accident Deaths In Wisconsin On Par With History

Wisconsin had three more traffic deaths in January than in the same month a year ago. Preliminary D-O-T figures show that 36 people were killed in Wisconsin highway crashes last month -- the same as the average for the past five years. Six pedestrians were among those killed. Last month's death toll was tied for the ninth-lowest in Wisconsin since the end of World War Two in the 1940's, when the modern highway system began to flourish. D-O-T officials are urging drivers to be more careful. With gas prices down, they expect more traffic -- and they're trying to build on a solid safety record from last year, when Wisconsin had fewer than 500 fatalities for the first time since 1943.

Gogebic Taconite was expected to file a formal application this spring for its proposed iron ore mine near Mellen in Ashland and Iron counties. However, the Wisconsin State Journal now reports that an application probably won't be ready until 2016 -- because the firm still needs to study water quality at the site, as part of an environmental impact statement. Iron County zoning administrator Tom Bergman tells the State Journal that officials are concerned that Gogebic Taconite will pull out completely. He said the county needs the jobs the mine would provide, but it wants to make sure it does not degrade the region's quality of life.
