Lumberjack show offers close up look of Northwoods logging tools & techniques

RHINELANDER - The All American Lumberjack Show at the Boom Lake Log Jam in Rhinelander Saturday gave people the chance to see lumberjack work and competitions up close.

Loggers can thank heavy machinery for changing the way they work here in the Northwoods. Loggers don't really need dozens of lumberjacks in the woods anymore. Instead, they turn to a few people, joy sticks and a handful of $500,000 machines. But the lumberjacks offer a look at how things use to work in the woods.

Lumberjacks these days don't use quiet tools, but Nate Greenberg, who performs for the lumberjack show, says they're the tools of choice for the traveling lumberjack show.

City of Antigo, Langlade County consider possible upgrades to emergency warning systems

LANGLADE COUNTY - Antigo could replace its old tornado sirens with a new 24-hour warning system.

Both the city and Langlade County have been looking for a replacement since the sirens were shut down at the beginning of 2015. Now, city and county leaders are deciding whether to go with a new technology or turn the sirens back on.

"Selfishly, if money was no object, it would be wonderful for us to have another tool in the tool shed, that being the outdoor weather sirens," says Langlade County Emergency Management Director Brad Henricks. "But the community needs to take a look at fiscal considerations. Is that money well spent? Or are there other options on the table for them to take a look at?"

"We were here at 3:00 a.m. this morning," said Susan Wege, co-owner of Sportsman's Café. "Baking and getting things ready. We make all of our baked goods from scratch; pies and cakes and cookies, getting that all taken care of and getting the buffet set up and everything."
