Police: 1 arrest during Milwaukee shooting protest

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee police say they have arrested one person for disorderly conduct during a demonstration calling for charges against a white police officer who shot and killed a black man in a downtown park in April.

Dontre Hamilton's family and supporters marched Tuesday from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to Red Arrow Park before staging the City Hall sit-in. It's unclear why the person was arrested.

Kids enjoy shopping with officers

MINOCQUA - Some kids might think police officers are intimidating or scary. But officers want to show them they're not. Officers in Minocqua helped kids choose presents for their families Tuesday.

"I like it because when I shop with him it makes me feel happy inside," said 7-year-old Krisy Patzliff.

Most 7-year-old girls love to shop, but Patzliff found it even more enjoyable because it was with a cop.

Northwoods soldier returns from Afghanistan, surprises daughters

MINOCQUA - Two girls couldn't see their dad for six months because he was in a war zone. He came home to Wisconsin on Monday. His daughters were supposed to reunite with him at a ceremony at Volk Field the same day. Bad weather and illness kept them from making it to their dad's homecoming. Their mother wanted to make it up to them. She brought a very special surprise to both of their schools on Tuesday.

That special surprise was their father, Sgt. Charlie Imlah.

"I'm excited. I just want to see how she's going to react," Sgt. Imlah said before surprising his daughter, Chelsea, at school.

Photojournalist killed by Al-Qaeda has ties to the Northwoods

THREE LAKES - Al-Qaeda terrorists killed an American photojournalist this weekend.

Luke Somers was born in Britain but graduated from Beloit College in southern Wisconsin in 2008. But before he graduated, he worked here in the Northwoods.

Teaching Drum Outdoor School Director Tamarack Song says Somers and his girlfriend worked there six years ago for six months. The Three Lakes school focuses on teaching students how to survive in the wilderness. Somers helped him edit his first book.

Wisconsin voucher programs seeing rapid growth

MADISON - The number of students receiving private-school tuition vouchers in Wisconsin is nearing 30,000, making the state a leader when it comes to taxpayer-funded tuition subsidies.

An official state headcount conducted in September determined almost 29,700 students were enrolled in the three voucher programs in Milwaukee, Racine and statewide. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1G9NEJF ) reports enrollment in voucher programs has grown significantly and will likely continue to do so under the leadership of Gov. Scott Walker and the Republican-controlled Legislature.

DNR looking to change invasive species categories

WISCONSIN - Changes could be coming to how the Wisconsin DNR deals with certain invasive species.

The DNR puts invasive species in a few different categories. The DNR might change what categories certain invasives are in.

If a species isn't in the state or is only in a few spots it will be a prohibited species. That means DNR workers are trying to prevent the species from getting into the state.

US House gives Great Lakes cleanup 5 more years

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The U.S. House has voted to extend a program that has spent $1.6 billion on efforts to clean up the Great Lakes.

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has drawn bipartisan support from lawmakers across the eight-state region since President Barack Obama proposed it in 2010. It funds projects that remove polluted sediments, fight invasive species such as zebra and quagga mussels, restore wildlife habitat and prevent runoff that causes harmful algae blooms.

RPD aims to raise money for two important programs by hosting bowling party

RHINELANDER - Just like human workers in their 50s or 60s, Drago will retire in the next few years. He's the Rhinelander Police Department's K-9 unit. Police will host a party to raise money to buy Drago's replacement, and help another important program.

"Drago's a dual-purpose K-9, certified in narcotics and patrol work," said Sgt. Angela Mertz of the Rhinelander Police Department.

Drago's been on the force for more than five years. He assists with 50 to 60 investigations each year. Those investigations aren't just in Rhinelander.

2 dozen cited after Wisconsin house party

DARLINGTON - A big house party in the small town of Darlington this weekend resulted in two dozen teenagers and young adults cited, mostly for underage drinking.

The Wisconsin State Journal (http://bit.ly/1vxb7fU ) reports party-goers scattered when police arrived early Sunday, some jumping out of second-story windows. No injuries were reported.

Police say the party started Saturday night at a Main Street residence and was busted by police at about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Jewelry robbers follow victims for several hundred miles on the highway

MARION TOWNSHIP, MN - Investigators believe some jewelry robbers followed their victims for several hundred miles from a trade show in Chicago before they struck at a rest stop in Minnesota.

Olmsted County sheriff's officials say four people dressed in black got out of a van at the Interstate 90 rest area near Rochester early Monday, smashed several windows on the victims' vehicle and grabbed three or four suitcases filled with gold and silver jewelry and loose diamonds.

Protesters accuse state of mismanaging wolf hunt

MADISON - A group of protesters is accusing Wisconsin wildlife officials of mismanaging the state's wolf hunt.

About a dozen protesters affiliated with the Wolf and Wildlife Action Group converged on the Capitol's steps Monday holding rusty leg traps and photos of injured wolves. They complained the Department of Natural Resources allowed hunters to go above the statewide kill limit this year. They also insisted trapping wolves and hunting them with dogs is inhumane.

The group marched to Gov. Scott Walker's office.
