Hawks get rubber match with Bulldogs in playoffs
Leader Staff
The Shawano girls soccer team, after moving to Division 3 from Division 2, received a sixth seed in its regional, set to face Bay Conference foe and third-seeded New London in the opening round on Thursday, June 2.
The No. 6 Hawks (6-9-2, 4-5-2 Bay), have faced the Bulldogs (9-10-5, 4-4-3 Bay) twice so far this season. Shawano won 5-3 in the first matchup on April 19, before falling 4-3 in the second meeting between the teams on May 17.
The winner of the first-round matchup will then take on the winner of second-seeded Mosinee and seventh-seeded Waupaca on June 4.
Seymour (8-3-4, 6-2-3 Bay), which finished third in the Bay Conference, earned the top seed in the regional. The Thunder will face the Clintonville Truckers (0-13-0, 0-7-0 North Eastern Conference) in the first round.

Shawano seniors Zeke Gueths and Erika Dunnam were the closest to qualifying for state, each taking fifth in their respective events at the WIAA Division 1 sectional in Bay Port on Thursday, with the top three moving onto the state meet.
Dunnam had a throw of 36 feet and 8 1/2 inches in the shot put, over one foot better than her seed from the WIAA regional on Tuesday at Green Bay Preble.
Dunnam missed the chance at state by exactly three feet, with West De Pere’s Valerie Smith (39-8 1/2)taking third, and two Ashwaubenon athletes finishing in the top two.
As for Gueths, his discus throw of 156-9 was just shy over fourth place, who did not defeat Gueths by more than an inch.
Bay Port’s Cole Van Lanen, Kimberly’s Logan McCormick and Appleton West’s Jack Flynn all advanced in the discus with throws over 165 feet.
SCHS freshman Parker Pues, in his first opportunity at a sectional meet, improved on his seed in the triple jump, but took seventh in the event with a leap of 40-1 3/4. Bay Port’s Cordell Tinch won the triple jump in 43-11.
Finally, junior Michael Mault took eighth in the 300-meter hurdles. His time of 43.12 seconds was just under 3 seconds off the pace set by winner DJ Stewart from Kimberly.
The boys were able to tally 7 points in the three events, while Dunnam was the lone participant for the girls, getting 4 points.
Bay Port won the boys meet with 115 points, while Kimberly led all girls teams with 86 points.

Leader Staff
The Bonduel track team punched two tickets to the WIAA Division 2 state meet in La Crosse on June 3-4 with performances from senior Trebor Rueckert and junior Emily Sorenson at Thursday’s WIAA Division 2 sectional in Little Chute.
Sorenson will make a return trip to state, having finished third in the long jump a season ago. Her jump of 16 feet, 6 1/2 inches put her in third place, trailing Xavier’s sectional winner, Stephanie Sowin, by 1 inch.
Sorenson has jumped as far as 18-4 1/2 in the long jump this season.
Rueckert, who competed at the sectional meet in both the 400-meter dash and the 4x200 relay, placed fourth in the 400 in 50.89 seconds.
He was 1.7 seconds off the pace set by Little Chute’s Parker Gloudemans, who took first.
Clintonville High School senior Kara Pyatskowit, who also went to state for cross-country in Madison in the fall, will now represent the Truckers in La Crosse at state meet in both the 1,600 and 3,200.
Pyatskowit barely took each of the sectional titles, with her time of 5:13.61 in the mile beating North Eastern Conference challenger Bailey Wolf (5:14.21), and her 3,200 title of 11:30.72 just edging out Freedom’s Lauren Vosters (11:30.75).
Joining her will be teammate Allysin Booth, who took third (15.73) in the 100 hurdles.
Bonduel and Clintonville tied for 23rd with 5 points on the boys side, with Little Chute taking the title with 85 points.
The Truckers racked up 29 points on the girls side to take 10th place, while Bonduel posted 12 points, good for 20th.

Menominee Indian High School senior Ania Smith took first place in both the shot put and discus at Thursday’s WIAA Division 3 sectional at Rosholt High School.
Smith’s shot put throw of 38 feet, 10 inches nearly 6 inches farther than the next thrower in the sectional, while her discus length of 124-9 was roughly 4 feet further than Newman Catholic’s Mariah Whalen, who came in second.
Gresham/Bowler added a strong day, with both Allison Stewart and Reanne Kietlinski securing positions at the state meet in La Crosse on June 3 and 4.
Stewart took fourth in both the 100 (13.07) and the 200 (27.52).
Kietlinski finished in fourth in the triple jump (33-8 3/4). She was 2 feet and 4 inches off the top mark in the sectional, set by Weyauwega-Fremont’s Cara Volz.
The Eagles posted 22 points in the girls meet, good for 11th place. Newman Catholic won the meet with 73 points. Gresham/Bowler (15.5), Marion (10) and Tigerton (4) were outside the top 12.
Marathon won the boys sectional with 110 points. No local teams recorded points.

Chris Caporale [email protected]
Leader photo by Chris Caporale SCHS sophomore pitcher Erin Cerveny allowed four runs in the first inning, but settled in to keep Peshtigo scoreless for two more innings in Shawano’s postponed WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal game at home. The Hawks led Peshtigo, 5-4, when lightning postponed the game until 4 p.m. Thursday.
The Shawano softball team rebounded from giving up four runs in the top of the first inning to take a 5-4 lead after two in a postponed WIAA Division 2 home regional semifinal contest against Peshtigo.
Sophomore pitcher Erin Cerveny needed a little time to find her composure in the circle, allowing two hits, a hit batter and an defensive error account for the four runs right away.
“What could go wrong went wrong, but credit to Peshtigo,” Shawano interim coach Brian Johnson said. “They jumped on us a little bit, but I liked the way the girls held their composure.”
Johnson did not need to wait long before the Hawks were able to do their thing.
He had a simple message for the team after the four-run first inning.
“(I) pulled the Aaron Rodgers card. ‘Just relax. There’s a lot of game left. Do our thing. We’ll be alright,’” Johnson told the team. “Give the girls credit, they settled in and did their thing.”
The Bulldogs (21-3, 14-0 Marinette & Oconto Conference) opened with a throwing error to allow Saige Henning to reach base in the bottom of the first. A stolen base, sacrifice bunt and a ground out pushed her across the plate before Sarah Petry would single with two outs, and Brandi Gueths got her around the base paths with an RBI triple to right field to cut the Shawano (17-9, 11-3 Bay Conference) deficit in half.
After a 1-2-3 inning by Cerveny, it was the bottom of the Hawks lineup producing the next runs to tie up the game in the second.
Kristina Wynos was hit by a pitch before freshman Bayleigh Laabs had a bunt single. Wynos and Laabs would each score on wild pitches from Peshtigo pitcher Teja Tonn.
“We’ve been waiting for that bottom of the order to come through for us all year,” Johnson said. “They did a nice job today swinging the bat well. That’s what we do. We’re a good hitting team. We know we can hit it from top to bottom.”
Laabs would crash into Tonn at the plate, shaking up the senior pitcher, but Tonn would remain in the game to finish the inning.
Defensively, Cerveny was aided by two difficult plays by senior second baseman Alli Raddant. The first of two came in the second inning, when Peshtigo sophomore Madi Martin grounded the ball up the middle. Raddant ran behind second base to field the ball before throwing over to junior Saige Henning at first base to beat Martin.
“That play up the middle, there’s not another second baseman in the conference that makes that play,” Johnson said. “A big-time moment out of the senior. That’s what we like to see out of her.”
After senior Ryleigh Klaver reached base on an error in the third inning, Raddant fielded a ground ball, tagged Klaver out as she was running to second, and threw to Henning at first base for the double play.
Cerveny got pitcher Teja Tonn to ground out to Laabs to end the top of the third inning. The game was then called after a bolt of lightning crossed the sky during the middle of the inning.
Cerveny pitched in Tuesday’s victory and again for three innings of work Wednesday. Johnson will lean on the sophomore again when play resumes in the bottom of the third at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
“I hope she comes in fresh,” Johnson said. “She’s a battler. She’s carried us all year.”

Senior pitcher Kelsey Corn could not keep the top-seeded Oconto Blue Devils off the board in the seventh inning, dropping a 7-6 contest on a walk-off winner on the road in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal.
Corn struck out 10 batters and walked six batters for the Eagles (13-8, 12-6 Central Wisconsin Conference-10). She had pitched a no-hitter on Tuesday before her losing effort on Wednesday.
Oconto’s Cierra Maulson had two extra base hits to lead Oconto (22-3, 14-0 Packerland Conference), one in each the second and sixth innings.

Chris Caporale [email protected]
Leader photo by Chris Caporale SCHS senior Tasa Grignon slides into third base as Bonduel’s Brent Pieper looks to make a tag on him. The Hawks and Bears split Saturday’s nonconference doubleheader in Bonduel.
Bonduel sophomore Wyatt Erb kept Shawano guessing early in Saturday’s doubleheader at home.
The fast-moving pitcher struck out 10 Hawks over seven innings, allowing two hits and three earned runs as the Bears took the opening game 8-3. Shawano would win the second game 13-6 after an offensive outburst in the sixth inning.
“When he really wanted to locate his fastball, he could throw his fastball wherever he wanted to,” Bonduel head coach Donnie Gruenewald said. “They weren’t catching up to it. He had good command of all his pitches.”
Erb walked four batters, including allowing just one batter, Shawano’s Alex Hoffman, to get on base in the first five innings, on a hit by pitch.
The Bears (14-4, 10-3 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) were able to break up the 0-0 tie in the fourth inning, scoring five runs, aided by defensive mistakes by the Hawks (6-14, 3-7 Bay Conference), including a misplayed fly ball and grounder.
After Garrett Siolka had an RBI infield single to open up the scoring, Trevor Pedersen reached on an error, which scored another run. Bailey Dingeldein was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 3-0, and Brent Pieper doubled to center field, plating two more runs.
Bonduel would add three more runs in the sixth inning on a bases-clearing double by Dingeldein off Shawano’s Joey Tadych, who pitched the remaining two innings. The bases-loaded double to Dingeldein was just one of three hits allowed by Tadych.
Erb walked three batters in the sixth, allowing three runs with a defensive error and and two singles, as the Hawks closed the gap to five.
“We had to be more aggressive. We couldn’t put the ball in play,” Shawano head coach Rob Wolff said. “We had way too many strikeouts. You’ve got to tip your hat to (Erb). He made the pitches when he had to.”
The second game included a stronger offensive performance from the Hawks, going against a depleted Bonduel pitching staff, which had completed a doubleheader sweep of Manawa the previous day.
Bonduel senior Jack Thiel allowed two earned runs and three unearned runs in three innings in his first pitching performance of the season. He would take the loss.
Tasa Grignon had an RBI double to left field to open the scoring in the first inning, and Tadych scored on a wild pitch in the second inning. The Hawks would post three runs in the third, on a Hoffman single, a fielder’s choice by Brett Lorge and an error.
“We needed to play better defense behind them, and we played worse defense than we played in the first game,” Gruenewald said. “If we would have played decent defense, it would have been a much better game.”
Dylan Sumnicht picked up the victory for the Hawks, but Wolff did not believe Sumnicht was throwing his best on the day. He still struck out six batters, but allowed 11 hits.
Pieper was 3 for 3 at the plate in the second game for the Bears, who used a four-run fourth inning to come back from a 7-6 deficit.
Pieper would go on to pitch three innings for the Bears. After holding Shawano to three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the visitors would tack on five runs in the sixth inning to take the commanding lead. Grignon had a two-run home run to left field in the frame as well.
With the playoffs awaiting both teams, the matchup helped both the Hawks and Bears face a quality opponent toward the end of the season.
“We did see a really good, quality pitcher in Game 1, and I told them, ‘That’s what we are going to see come tournament time,’” Wolff said. “But we’ve got to put the ball in play more and make things happen.”
Bonduel, which has been let down by its bats in previous seasons, will look to keep the production at a similar level to the past week.
Gruenewald believes the approach his team showed in both games can go a long way to help the Bears have a better chance in its regional semifinal game on May 31.
“I liked the approach we had at the plate,” he said. “They really battled, they came to hit, and they wanted to hit all day long.”

Greg Bates Leader Correspondent
After a solid regular season, the Bonduel boys and girl track and field team prepared for the postseason, and its athletes were ready.
The Bears teams got a large group of kids to advance to sectionals after doing well at a WIAA Division 2 regional in Freedom on Monday, May 23.
“I’m proud of both teams. All you can do is go out there and give your best effort, and I thought our kids did that,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said. “They worked hard all year, and I’m really proud of the kids that made it, and really proud of the kids that didn’t.”
The boys finished fifth (48) out of nine schools. Freedom was first (184), followed by Little Chute (170) and Seymour (104). The Bonduel girls were seventh (65) as Freedom was tops (144.5). Oconto Falls (103) and Seymour (99) came in second and third, respectively.
Westrich has his athletes approach regionals and sectionals a little different than regular-season meets.
“I always talk to the kids ahead of time, and for conference I tell them it’s the coach’s decision to put the best team out there and try to win a conference championship,” Westrich said. “‘When it comes to regionals, that’s your time to kind of decide what you want to do individually.’ We’re a smaller school in Division 2, so it’s tough competing against Freedom and Seymour and those teams.”
Sectionals will be held at Little Chute High School on Thursday. The field events start at 3 p.m. and the track events at 3:45 p.m.
Girls
Three individuals punched their tickets to sectionals on the girls side, along with two relay teams.
Junior Emily Sorenson had a great day, placing first in the long jump (16-07) and third in the 100-meter dash (12.84). She was also a big part of the 4x200 relay – along with Peyton Hrabik, Hayley Pues and Christine Sell – who finished third (1:50.87).
“I didn’t know I was going to get in three (events),” Sorenson said. “I’m pretty happy about that.”
Sorenson, who went to state last year in the long jump after winning sectionals, has jumped 18-04 twice in two events this year, so her 16-07 was a little off.
“That’s not a good jump for her, but good enough to advance her,” Westrich said. “She didn’t jump at all in finals and the pit was kind of hard, and she didn’t really need to. I’m sure she would have jumped better than that if she would have jumped more.”
Pues also moved on individually in two events: 300-meter hurdles (50.22) where she placed second and the high jump (5-0) where she was third.
“To get second and run the time she did was good to see from her this year,” Westrich said.
Allyssa Moser provided a surprise. The sophomore was seeded seventh coming into the 400, and she came in fourth (1:06.9) by cutting a second and a half from her time.
Bonduel’s 4x800 relay team – Anna Palmer, Moser, Ashlynn Schnell and Arianna Factor – finished fourth (11:05.48).
“Going in, it really didn’t look like we had an opportunity, but they shaved some time off,” Westrich said. “Three of the girls ran really, really well. We got lucky we just had to beat one team, and we did that to advance, so that was good.”
The Clintonville girls track and field team will be sending four individuals to sectionals.
Junior Kara Pyatskowit led the way with a first-place finish in the 3,200-meter run (11:34.73) and second in the 1,600 (5:19.63).
Brooke Wespetal won the first regional title of her career, as the freshman was tops in the 400 (1:05.12). Fellow freshman Allysin Booth placed runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles (16.19). Jessie Barker, who was fifth in the 100 dash, took second in the 200 (26.98).
Boys
Bonduel sent three boys individuals and the 4x200-meter relay team to sectionals.
“They went out and performed well,” Westrich said. “There were a couple things we wished would have went better, but all in all, I thought they did a nice job.”
Preston Robaidek advanced in the high jump, placing second (5-08). His personal record is 5-10.
“I came in ranked tied for third and was expecting to do good,” said Robaidek, who is looking for his first trip to state. “I made 5-08 and struggled at 5-10 a little bit.”
Robaidek was also a member of the 4x200 – along with Trebor Rueckert, Eli Mastey and Jacob Banker — that finished fourth (1:35.04).
Bonduel put its four fastest runners in the event; the guys had only raced together once.
“We’re still improving on our handoffs and everything,” Robaidek said. “Thursday, we should be able to scratch off a few seconds. Our handoffs weren’t the greatest, and we have to improve on that and run faster.”
Rueckert just missed out on making it to sectionals in the triple jump, but he placed second in the 400 (51.44). Spencer Perry threw well in the discus (135-00) and finished in third place.
Westrich noted a couple of his athletes have a good shot at advancing to the state meet.
“Trebor’s got a chance in the 400; he’s got to shave off a little bit more time off that,” Westrich said. “It’s going to be tough, but there’s a chance there. The 4x200 team will definitely have to shave a few seconds off their time if they want to advance. But we’re just looking, go out there and give it your best effort and see what happens.”
On the boys side, the only Clintonville athlete to move to sectionals was Todd Taylor. The senior was third in both the 100 (11.13) and 200 (23.04).

Chris Caporale [email protected]
Leader photo by Chris Caporale Bonduel High School sophomore Brynn Reinke fields a ground ball and readies a throw to first in the first inning of Tuesday’s 5-0 victory over Gillett/Suring.
Before Gillett/Suring pitcher Jessica Anderson could get settled into Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal game in Bonduel, the Bears had already posted four runs, all Bears pitcher Kailee Pedersen needed in the 5-0 victory.
Pedersen, as the leadoff batter in the bottom of the first, walked and stole a base, and Miranda Schmidt bunted for a single, moving her to third base. Cameri Gehm opened up the scoring with a line-drive double to left field, scoring both Pedersen and Schmidt.
Junior Brittany Wudtke added an RBI on a fielder’s choice in which she reached first base, and Kelsey Krueger hit a sacrifice to third base to score to round out the scoring in the inning.
“I liked the aggressiveness at the beginning of the game, but then it seemed after that, that focus wasn’t as good as it should have been,” Bonduel head coach Chris Reinke said.
The Hornets, in addition to allowing the four-run first inning, did not have a hit through the first four innings. Pedersen faced the minimum number of batters until Taylor Yonker walked and was stranded on second base when Myranda Pratsch flew out to end the inning.
Pedersen needed just 12 pitches to get through the first two frames.
“They get a little nervous, but I think the nervousness comes from wanting to try so hard, too much, so they just have to relax,” Gillett/Suring head coach Mike Umentum said of the team’s early struggles. “Once they get into it, they relax, they get into it, they play defense.”
Anderson was able to settle in, allowing Bonduel’s last run of the game on a double steal in the third inning, scoring Wudtke, who had two hits on the day.
Anderson was able to get Bonduel clean-up hitter Kaylee Rynish to ground out in the first inning, which gave her some confidence moving forward in the contest to keep the Bears off the board for the majority of the game.
“When we got their catcher, Rynish, on a changeup outside, low, she chased it and hit it back, I think that was a big boost for (Anderson),” Umentum said. “(Anderson) knew she could throw at her.”
Bonduel’s Becca Carpenter also tallied two hits to lead the Bears (11-10, 6-8 Central Wisconsin Conference-8), but it was Gehm’s two first-inning RBIs that did the most damage for the hosts.
The Hornets (5-14, 4-10 Marinette & Oconto Conference) had chances to score off Pedersen, including an opportunity with bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning. Pedersen got Greta Sleeter to ground back to her, and threw home to Rynish for the force out at the plate. Rynish then turned and beat Sleeter with the throw to first base.
Pratsch, the next batter, would then ground out to Carpenter at first base to end the threat.
“We prepared for a faster pitcher, and (Pedersen) was a really good pitcher, but our girls like to reach too much,” Umentum said. “We want them to let it in a little more and then square it up. We got a little too anxious trying to make something happen.”
Bonduel, with the victory, will travel to Stratford on Wednesday in WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal action.

Leader Photo by Chris Caporale Shawano Community High School junior catcher Jack Hanauer looks a runner back early in Friday’s 14-1 victory over Clintonville. Hanauer had two hits and a walk at the plate for the Hawks.
Five Shawano Hawks each had at least two hits in a 14-1 dismantling of the Clintonville Truckers in five innings Friday in Shawano.
Kasey Kristof, Jacob Lacy, Nate Laude, Jack Hanauer and Alex Hoffman led Shawano at the plate, while sophomore Bryce Gagnow pitched a complete game.
Lacy led Shawano with three RBIs. Tasa Grignon had two RBIs.
“We just hit the cover off the ball,” Shawano head coach Rob Wolff said. “We’ve been squaring the ball up. I hope we keep rolling.”
It started early for the Hawks, with Kristof getting a single and Lacy driving him in. The Hawks added two more runs with two outs off Clintonville starting pitcher Chad Bork.
Laude, Grignon and Hanauer were all on base when Hoffman walked for his first RBI of the day. Gagnow got an infield single and RBI when Hoffman beat the throw to second base.
“Honestly, I think we came in a little overconfident,” Clintonville head coach Dean Muthig said. “And I’m not sure why, to be honest with you. With the (WIAA) regional seeding coming out, and us having a better record than them and whatnot. Sometimes, our guys, they tend to look past or overlook and come in a little overconfident. They didn’t come with intensity.”
Shawano continued the onslaught at the plate, with Lacy driving in Kristof again in the second inning. The Truckers, attempting to turn a double play, threw the ball away on Grignon’s ground ball. Grignon moved to third base, while Lacy scored the Hawks’ fifth run of the game.
Hanauer doubled in the next at-bat to score Grignon, and Hoffman added another RBI, this time on a single, scoring Hanauer to push the lead to 7.
Muthig then make a change on the mound, handing the ball to Keenan Doornink, who ended the inning with a strikeout.
Clintonville (6-13, 5-12 North Eastern Conference) got a run back in the top of the third inning, but then Doornink surrendered seven runs in the fourth inning.
Shawano (5-13, 3-7 Bay Conference) posted four hits in the inning and were aided by three walks and a hit-by-pitch. Senior Drake Feriancek was hit in the side to load the bases, and senior Adam Bartz walked to score Lacy as the final run of the game.
Gagnow went back to the mound in the fifth inning, hitting a batter before getting the next three batters out in order to seal the victory.
“I think his control can be better, so there’s some improvement could be there, but for the most part, he threw strikes and let the defense play behind him,” Wolff said.
Gagnow got his first varsity victory on his birthday. He allowed three hits and one earned run in five innings. He struck out four Truckers.
Kyle Finger led Clintonville with two singles. He had the lone RBI, scoring Jaden Doornink in the third inning.
The Hawks, who travel to Bonduel for a doubleheader Saturday, and then come back and finish the regular season with a doubleheader at home against New London on Tuesday, hope to continue the momentum at the plate to go along with an already strong pitching rotation.
Shawano is the underdog heading into the WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal in Marinette on Thursday.
“We can really get steam-rolling going into Marinette next Thursday,” Wolff said. “With the top two pitchers I have, I know they can compete with the pitchers that are in our regional, because we have seen all of them. If we (keep) hitting the ball like we are, we are going to be a tough team to beat.”

Contributed Illustration This is a rendering of the new scoreboard that Shawano school officials plan to purchase with support from Twig’s Beverage and Charlie’s County Market.
Leader Photo by Scott Williams The old scoreboard at Martzke Sports Park used for Shawano Community High School girls softball games will be replaced next month.
Fans attending girls softball games at a Shawano park soon will enjoy a new and bigger scoreboard, thanks to donations from two local businesses.
Twig’s Beverage and Charlie’s County Market have donated $3,500 each to purchase a scoreboard at Martzke Sports Park, which is home to the Shawano Community High School girls varsity softball team.
The new scoreboard is scheduled for installation next month.
Although the park is a city property, the school district is a partner and is the recipient of the business donations for the scoreboard.
Along with other recent improvements funded by the Shawano Athletic Booster Club, the new scoreboard is a major improvement to the softball field.
“It’s pretty much going to be a premier field,” said Charmaine Schreiber, the school district’s activities director. “It’s a beautiful facility.”
The new scoreboard will be larger than the old one, will include electronic features and will be installed in right field for better visibility. The old scoreboard in left field will be coming down.
Dan Hartwig, owner of Twig’s Beverage, said he fondly remembers growing up in Shawano and playing baseball as a youngster. He also has attended games at Martzke Park, and he was happy to contribute to improving the facilities there for players and fans.
“It’s a great sport for our youth,” he said. “So anything we can do to support it, it’s a good thing.”
Charles Harvey, owner of Charlie’s County Market, said he and Hartwig have been partners in supporting other civic improvements, so they got together and decided to split the cost of the new scoreboard.
“You’ve got to do stuff for your home town,” Harvey said. “It’s for a good cause. I mean, everyone wants to know what the score is.”

Scott Owen, Leader Columnist
This week, Shawano Speedway is paying homage to the local go-kart racing scene.
As I’ve written in the past, the GRS Kartway in Clintonville and the HiGo Raceway in Cecil have produced a wealth of racing talent in the past 10 years.
Over the past several years, Seymour’s Ty Majeski, who cut his teeth racing at the area’s go-kart tracks, has made a lot of noise in the world of pavement racing. Majeski has scored impressive pavement late model wins against some of the best paved track talent in the nation.
Aside from being a two-time ARCA Midwest tour champion, the 21-year-old college student has secured wins in prestigious races in Florida, Alabama and Minnesota, not to mention his relative dominance in his home state. Majeski was also honored as the first recipient of the Alan Kulwicki Driver Development championship.
None other than Dale Earnhardt Jr. has come out in support of Majeski, stating that “he might be one of the best new talents available.”
This past week, Majeski received a call that may very well change his life. Majeski was notified that he will be a member of the NASCAR Next program and will field a car as part of a development contract with Roush Fenway Racing.
What I remember of Majeski during his go-kart racing days will serve him well as he climbs the ladder toward NASCAR. Majeski was always a clean, respectful and cautiously aggressive racer. Off the track, one would be hard-pressed to find a more congenial young man.
Last year, Majeski started a program to help young go-kart racers both on and off the track.
Now, not many local go-karters will make it to NASCAR, but Majeski joins Ross Kenseth (son of former NASCAR champion Matt Kenseth) as two former kart racers with a solid chance of getting there.
Aside from the success of Majeski and Kenseth, the HiGo Raceway and GSR Kartway have helped to groom numerous track champions and successful racers.
In recent years, former karters Dillon Kralovetz, Marcus Yarie, Lucas Lamberies, Dan Michonski and Johnny Whitman have all scored track championships. Saturday night, many of the former kart racers will have their cars on display before race time behind the grandstands.
This is a great opportunity to bring the kids to meet some racers and get a close look at their machines.
The GSR Kartway races on Wednesday nights, while the HiGo Raceway runs on Friday nights. These are great opportunities to go see the stars of tomorrow.
See you at the speedway.

Leader Photo by Chris Caporale Gresham High School sophomore Dani Huntington swings at and misses a pitch from Marion junior Skylla Szczerbak late in Gresham’s 9-8 victory.
Led by sophomore Kamille Davids in the circle, Gresham withstood a late comeback attempt in a 9-8 win over Marion at home Thursday.
Davids struck out 13 batters, including three of the final four outs.
With the tying run in scoring position in the seventh, Davids struck out McKenna Crum for the final out to seal the victory and the team’s first-ever top-four finish in the Central Wisconsin Conference-10.
“We kept her in there, and there were times she struggled a little bit, and there was times they were hitting the crap out of her, but she stuck in there and she stayed focused the whole time,” Gresham head coach Amanda Reindl said.
Two hits, two walks and an error led to three Marion runs in the first inning. Autumn Krueger got the first RBI on a bases-loaded walk, and a throwing error by Davids scored two more runs.
Abby Polzin hit a two-RBI double in the second inning, but Davids got out of harm with another strikeout.
“Any game we play, it seems like it takes the first couple of innings for us to just calm down and realize we can field a ball, we can throw a ball, we know what we are doing,” Reindl said.
Despite their struggles, the Wildcats were able to keep up offensively. Following a Mackenzie Roe bunt single, a throwing error scored Dani Huntington and Mackenzie Hoffman. Davids and Alison Reyes each added RBIs in the opening inning Gresham took a 4-3 lead.
Gresham (9-9, 9-9 CWC-10) tacked on another run in the second to tie Marion (9-11, 8-10 CWC-10) at 5-5.
Davids recorded four more strikeouts over the next three innings.
“It didn’t matter who was pitching today, quite honestly,” Marion head coach Jenny Korth said. “They just didn’t come up there aggressively, ready to swing. We just kind of were a lot more passive in the box today, and it killed us.”
The Wildcats opened a four-run lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles from Davids and Kiersten Fischer and Makena Arndt’s two-RBI bloop single to right field.
Marion pitcher Skylla Szczerbak, who allowed eight earned runs over six innings, struck out Huntington to end the threat.
“We still have to make the outs when the ball is hit,” Korth said. “Szczerbak is definitely right where we want her to be.”
Polzin added an RBI in the sixth inning, her third of the day, on an infield single. Marion narrowed the deficit to one with runs on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch before Davids got a strikeout to end the game.
Polzin and Krueger combined for four of the Mustangs’ eight hits.
Gresham was led by Hoffman and Roe, each with three hits. Davids allowed eight hits and seven earned runs.
Reindl liked the way her team played, especially with its first home playoff game awaiting on Tuesday.
“They were playing as a team today,” Reindl said, “and you could tell they wanted it.”

It began as a crazy idea with a few of the Navarino Rangers baseball players.
Starting a tournament spurred visions of competition, community and camaraderie, but for several years it remained just a vision. That is, until the ball players developed so many details of the tournament that they were able to intrigue the team’s board of directors enough to let the players put their idea in motion.
And so, in 2012, the Navarino Hardball Challenge was born.
The fifth-annual, round-robin tournament will take place from May 26-28 in Navarino. The semifinals and finals will be played on May 29.
The players wanted the tournament to include not only Dairyland League teams but also include teams from other leagues in Wisconsin.
Over the years, the tourney has flexed from 12 teams to a more compact yet competitive nine-team tournament.
The challenge has included 19 teams from five leagues, including the Dairyland League, the Badger Amateur Baseball Association, the Northeast Wisconsin Baseball League, the Shoreland League and the Chippewa River Baseball League.
This year’s tournament includes the Shawano Lobos, Shawano Lakers, Appleton Legends, Pulaski Reds, Two Rivers Polar Bears, Bonduel Broncos, Hofa Park Panthers, Osseo Merchants and the host Navarino Rangers.
Proceeds from the tournament go to things such as team equipment, ball park improvements and general maintenance.
