Clarence John Priem

Sat, 02/28/2015 - 9:31am

Clarence John “Pussy” Priem, 96, passed away peacefully on Feb. 25, 2015.

Clarence was born on March 20, 1918, in Washington Township, the son of John and Elsie Priem. On April 10, 1939, he was united in marriage to Elaine Hicks in the rectory of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. He later converted to Catholicism and was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Clarence and Elaine shared their love for nature and hunting.

Clarence grew up on his family farm in Washington Township. In 1940, he began to work for Marigold Dairy, where he drove milk trucks for 40 years until his retirement. Clarence took time away from civilian life to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an active member of Shawano VFW Post 117.

Clarence was an avid sportsman, enjoying both hunting and fishing. He loved his cabin up north on the Pine River, and he could be found there many weekends, enjoying time with his wife and beloved Labradors. Clarence was a member of the Shawano Archery Club and received a special award as an outstanding archer. He was member of Wisconsin Motorcycle Club and enjoyed riding his Harley nearly as much as he enjoyed “shining it up.” Many summer evenings Clarence could be found in the park watching baseball games. He was also an avid stock car racing fan. Nieces and nephews remember the endless teasing of their Uncle Pussy, who liked to smoke big cigars. When visiting the Priems on Sundays, he would often be found in the garage, waxing and shining up his motorcycle or truck. A snack with Uncle Pussy always included cheese and a good venison sausage from one of his many successful hunts. Other Sunday meals at the Priems often included bear, pheasant, partridge or fish from his many successful exploits.

Clarence is survived in death by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wanda Sue Abler

Sat, 02/21/2015 - 7:32am

Wanda Sue Abler (Brennecke), 54, of Birnamwood, passed away at 11 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at UW Hospital in Madison, due to complications from a brain aneurysm . Wanda was born on Feb. 26, 1960, to Robert and Lorena Brennecke.

Wanda was a graduate of Antigo High School in 1979. On Feb. 17, 1979, she married Michael R. Abler.

Wanda as a child enjoyed hunting and fishing with her father . She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards, spending time with her family and friends and, of course, her dogs. She also loved spending time with her three daughters, whether traveling or shopping.

When Wanda wasn’t giving spa-like treatment to her clients at Shave and Bathe Pet Salon, she may have been trying to catch a plane to Colorado, Las Vegas, Sweden or Mexico, or was in a car seeing as much of the world as she could the last few years, whether it was to Canada fishing or her backyard overlooking the lake and woods — a passion rekindled with Karl Illichman. Another of her favorite places she also could be found was going on adventures to Rock Island with close family, or getting into some sort of trouble with her sister. When home, she enjoyed her dogs, bow hunting, and fishing, or enjoying a drink on the patio overlooking the lake.

She also loved spending as much time with her three daughters and six grandchildren, Devan, Alex, Vidalia, Cora, Temperance and Kaydence.

She believed that no matter how many times life knocked you down to get up and dust yourself off. As long as you have your family close, the rest can be put back together. She shared this with everyone Wanda touched. Wanda enjoyed helping others as much as she could. She believed we were the only ones who were going to make this world a better place, and it started with us.

Wanda is survived by her three daughters, Echo (Bryan) Nicolaus, of Shawano, Emily (Josh) Hurst, of Sterling, Colorado, and Pennie (Justin) Zwirschitz, of Mattoon; Johan Bjork, of Sweden; father, Robert Brennecke, of Mattoon; Karl Illchman, of Antigo; sisters Lori Harris, of Green Bay, Deb Ostrander, of Mattoon; brother, Steve Brennecke, of Mattoon; many nieces and nephews and friends.

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Abler; mother, Lorena Brennecke; grandmother, Ruth Lucia; sister-in-law, Diane Abler; and nephew, Shad Brennecke.

A celebration of life will be held for Wanda at Melody Mill, Aniwa, on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 2-6 p.m.

The family would like to thank the UW hospital of Madison.

Donald J. “Don” Gajewski, 87, of Shawano, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 15, 2015.

Don was born in Milwaukee on Oct. 28, 1927. As a young man he enjoyed living by Brady Street, where he first met his wife, Katie, at age 16. At age 17, Don enlisted into the United States Navy. Upon his return to Milwaukee, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Firkins on Sept. 11, 1948. He also began his nearly 40-year career at the Allen Bradley Company.

During his free time, Don enjoyed baking, yard work, reading World War II books, and listening to big band music. In their retirement, Don and Katie split their time living between Florida and Shawano. Every summer, they would share countless meals with their grandchildren, Rob, Ryan and Jaime.

Don was especially fond of spending time with his great-grandson, Charlie, and the family dog, Maggie. Most of all, he will be missed by his beloved wife, Katie, with whom he spent over 70 years. They rarely spent a night apart and were fortunate to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary last month surrounded by friends and family.

Don is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Firkins) Gajewski, of Shawano; his son, Robert “Bob” (Nancy) Gajewski, of Rhinelander; two grandsons, Rob (Jaime) Gajewski, of Shawano, and Ryan Gajewski, of Madison; as well as a great-grandson, Charlie.

A small family memorial service was held at Birch Hill on Feb. 17, 2015.

The Gajewski family would like to thank Father Luke from Sacred Heart for his kindness as well as the entire staff at Birch Hill for their care and concern.

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 7:10am

Loretta M. Salzman, 85, of Tigerton, passed away Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at Homme Home of Wittenberg.

Loretta Mabel Salzman was born on Aug. 21, 1929, in the town of Morris, Shawano County, to Louis and Elizabeth (Jolin) Salzman. She attended school and was raised in the Tigerton area.

Loretta was an excellent speller, and she was a gifted artist who liked to draw people. She had an extraordinary memory for relative’s birthdates. Reading magazines was a favorite pastime as well. Watching TV game shows or listening to classic country western music, like Gene Autry or Johnny Cash, were other interests of Loretta’s. Going on bus trips to see the sites around Wisconsin and visiting her sister, Baeda, in Shawano regularly was something that she always loved.

Survivors include a sister, Baeda Ashenbrenner, of Shawano, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, many other relatives and friends.

Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Leora as an infant, Ruth Milanowski, Myrtle Menge, Ethel Ashenbrenner and Florence Redman; and four brothers, Merlin, Marvin, Clarence and Floyd Salzman.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Tigerton. The Rev. Patrick Lloyd officiated. Burial will be in the spring at Union Cemetery, Tigerton. Friends called on Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Tigerton, and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of Mass at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Our family wishes to thank all the nurses and staff at Homme Home for the wonderful care they provided to Loretta. We also want to especially thank her friend and caregiver, Sharon Dedolph, of Tigerton, for all the years of care and support given to allow Loretta to remain in her home.
