Residents express concerns about railroad safety in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE -- There are new concerns over railroad safety in Milwaukee.
A report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) questions whether new tankers are safe enough to carry crude oil.
There have been three train derailments so far this year in the U.S. and Canada.
Milwaukee Alderman Bob Bauman said residents in Walkers Point have expressed concerns. Similar cargo makes its way through that area every day.
"The fire department indicated that were there a major incident in downtown Milwaukee that involved an explosion or fire from this crude oil, they would recommend an evacuation within a half mile radius, well that is most of downtown Milwaukee," Bauman said.
Federal officials plan to meet with Milwaukee city leaders about the issue later this month.
