Storm spotters help keep people safe during severe weather

Tue, 04/14/2015 - 12:09pm
MILWAUKEE - The National Weather Service depends not only on radar, but also on volunteers who report on what conditions are like on the ground during severe weather. "Our radar beam goes above what's happening at the ground, so we have people down on the ground giving us visuals, if they're seeing a developing tornado, or any other severe weather, like large hail or damaging winds," explained National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Halbach. Spotters receive training on what to look for. "Some of the main things they're looking at are cloud characteristics that sometimes give forewarning that a tornado could occur, like a wall cloud, which is a cloud that hangs off the back side of a storm." Safety is always a top priority. "A lot of it is knowing where you're at in relation to the storm and if you are away from your home, how to get out of the bad situation and get back to either your home, where you might have a basement, or to a safe shelter," said Halbach. Anyone can be a storm spotter. People who are interested just need to take a class through the National Weather Service.
