Northern Wisconsin wakes up to 8 inches of snow on Halloween

Fri, 10/31/2014 - 1:11pm
WINCHESTER - It was a shock to the system when we woke up to snow on the ground on Friday morning. But before you get too upset, it could be worse. Folks in northern Wisconsin were dumped on. "We have eight inches of snow," said Paul Williams, Winchester Town Chairman. "Yesterday I mowed my lawn." The people of Winchester, located in Vilas County, are used to early snowfalls, according to Williams. "We're right on the corner of the Lake Superior snow belt," Williams explained. "We catch (all the snow) when other areas only get a trace." Trick-or-Treating takes place Friday afternoon. Will the snow cause any problems? "The little ones might have a little trouble wading through (the snow)," Williams joked. "I'd put one of those bicycle flags on a smaller child."

Huge pumpkin display lights up Appleton home

Fri, 10/31/2014 - 11:49am
APPLETON - It's a Halloween tradition that attracts thousands of visitors each year: the Rades family pumpkin display. Halloween has always been a big deal for Kevin Rades; it is his grandmother's birthday. "I remember when I was little, we'd go trick or treating, and after we were done, the pumpkins I would carve for our house, we'd take them over to my grandma's house." The tradition has grown since Rades was a child. We have over twenty carved pumpkins, plus thousands of orange and purple lights," said Rades. And they're not your average jack-o-lanterns with triangle eyes or square noses. "We have intricate patterns that we put out and we try to do new ones every year." This year, Rades is trying a theme for the first time: A Night at the Movies. "We have Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the big one: we are going to recreate Frozen. We have a part of our landscape that we're going to try to turn icy cold with blue lights, white lights, we have a Christmas tree with light," said Rades. There's nothing scary about this display. "It's a wonderful alternative to the scary side of Halloween. We make it fun for everyone." The display is free to see, but donations are accepted. Rades rotates the charities he donates to every year. This year it's the Fox Valley Humane Association. For more info on when and where you can see the display, click here.
