Multiple crews respond to fire at Northwestern Mutual building

Wed, 11/26/2014 - 9:35am
MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a fire at the Northwestern Mutual building in downtown Milwaukee Wednesday morning. As many as eight fire trucks were dispatched at 8 a.m. to 720 E. Wisconsin Ave. where firefighters said they put out a fire in the basement of the historic building. The building was evacuated as a precaution. Battalion Chief Aaron Lipski said the fire started in an electrical vault when some insulation caught fire, going up in flames very quickly and causing a lot of smoke. He said the challenge was that they couldn't use water to fight the fire, but instead used carbon dioxide equipment because of the sensitive nature of its location. The issue has been resolved, there were no injuries and employees will be back inside the building shortly, officials said.
