Sports Auction for the MACC Fund raises more than $44,000
MILWAUKEE -- TODAY'S TMJ4 just finished its annual Sports Auction for the MACC Fund.
Viewers raised more than $44,000 bidding on sports memorabilia. The money will help fund research for childhood cancer in the greater Milwaukee area.
Thanks to the fund, giant strides have been made in fighting childhood cancer. Just 25 years ago, the future for kids battling cancer looked bleak.
"I think the survival probabilities across the board were probably 30 to 40 percent," said Dr. David Margolis with Children's Hospital.
He said there is now a survival rate between 75 to 80 percent: a substantial improvement.
"As we understand it better, not only does it help childhood cancer, it also helps us understand adult cancers as well," Margolis said.
Doctors understand leukemia better, but are still figuring out the biology of some brain tumors.
Sometimes, the survival rate is less than 10 percent. That's why donations from the MACC fund are so critical. The money goes to the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children's Hospital and the University of Wisconsin.
"It really stays locally, which is wonderful," Margolis said. "And it supports basic science research and clinical research at the institutions."
Over the years, Margolis has seen cancer patients grow, recover, and reach milestones like getting married and going to college.
"One of my patients is now a freshman at Stanford. I consider myself a Stanford dad, even though I'm not the dad," he said. "It's fantastic, and I think those wins are what we all celebrate."
Another way to support the MACC fund is to buy a MACC star: a very special Christmas ornament designed by children and sold every year.
