Yuzuru Hanyu won Japan's first Olympic gold medal in men's figure skating Friday at the Sochi Games despite two falls. Patrick Chan, trying for Canada's first such victory, took silver.

Britain's Lizzy Yarnold won the Olympic women’s skeleton gold medal Friday night with a time that was 0.97 seconds faster than American silver medalist Noelle Pikus-Pace, who entered retirement by exorcising the memory of letting a medal slip away in Vancouver four years ago.

Sandro Viletta of Switzerland stunned the favorites and won the Olympic super-combined title Friday in a spring-like race. Defending champion Bode Miller finished sixth, while world champion Ted Ligety placed 12th.

I've spent the past week operating on Sochi time, helping to produce the Journal Sentinel's Olympic coverage in real time. After hearing plenty of explanations during the Olympics, it reminded me that I should go into more detail as to how I produce these rankings each week.
