Back to the beginning with Bronson Koenig

Fri, 04/03/2015 - 12:10am
The secret is out around downtown Indianapolis. The road to college basketball's ultimate prize ends here. But where exactly did that road begin? For each Wisconsin Badger, the path to the ultimate stage began in a gym microscopic in comparison to Lucas Oil Stadium. In one case, before the big final four venues, before the Kohl Center, and even before Aquinas High School – a gym belonged to one kid.         "If I ever wanted to find Bronson or talk to him, I just came to the YMCA,” said Bronson Koenig’s fourth and fifth grade basketball coach Joe Mirasola. “He was always here you would see him there all the time.” "The kid is a gym rat,” said Koenig’s longtime YMCA basketball coach Richie Johnson.  “We close at ten o'clock at night. Just to let you know. If you did not come and check the gym, or if the curtain was down and you heard a ball bouncing there is a 99.9 percent chance that it was Bronson behind that curtain. There were days you used to see him here when the courts were full, and he would just dribble on the sideline for hours. Joe calls me one day, and says man - you have to come see this." And the funny thing about this is: Not much has changed with Koenig. "He has always been a tough minded kid,” said Johnson. “He never turned the ball over a lot. Even back then he never turned that ball over. Today, the YMCA presents an opportunity for the next ‘Kid Koenig,’ where ever he or she may be. "We give you the opportunity to be who you want to be. The biggest thing we really do is give them parts of life that you would not get in a team oriented situation,” said Johnson. "You never worried about them, and the "Y" is a very safe place,” said Mirasola. It always has had a very safe environment. This has been a place where basketball has really blossomed, and started a lot of the young stars in this area." The late nights of practicing alone have moved on to places with bigger stands, and higher ceilings. But, those who witnessed Bronson's beginnings will watch Saturday with a smile." "I watched him early mornings working,” said Johnson. "It is really a blessing to see him shining."
