Amendments to allow ATVs on roadways gain traction at transportation meeting

The hot topic at the Price County's Highway and Transportation Committee meetings recently has been making amendments to a county ordinance to open the county highways to All Terrain and Utility Terrain Vehicles (ATV and UTVs).

Last week's meeting was no different, as about 20 people crowded into the room to give their views to Highway Commissioner Don Grande and the members of the Highway and Transportation Committee.

Antique Appraisal Show to be held during Heritage Days at Wisconsin Concrete Park

On Saturday, May 16 from noon until 3 p.m., Mark Moran will be appraising antiques brought to him during Heritage Days: Get Hooked on History at Wisconsin Concrete Park. A portion of the $15 appraisal fee will be donated to the Friends of Fred Smith, sponsors of the event, for educational programming.

Heritage Days is a two-day event, the first day of which is dedicated to field trips by area fourth graders whose social studies curriculum is Wisconsin history. School kids are engaged by facilitators at over 30 interactive, hands-on history stations set throughout the park. On Saturday, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. along with Mark Moran’s appraisal show, the event will be expanded with an additional five hours of continuous music, demonstrations of tools and skills from centuries past, live foodways exhibits, interactive history stations, ethnic food, and authentic historical re-enactors from the fur trade era through the 1850s.

ATVs on county highways: big topic for local tourism

According to Price County Tourism Director Kathy Reinhard, supporters of opening county highways for the use of All Terrain and Utility Terrain Vehicles (ATV and UTVs) have been campaigning hard for the passage of the ordinance change that it would take to make the recreational vehicles traveling on the highways legal.

Reinhard advised the Forestry and Parks and Tourism Committee that there are many supporters and likewise - many opponents to the proposal.

She presented the committee with an email she'd received from Gary and Barb Revak of Phillips, asking for support from the Tourism Department. Reinhard was in turn asking the committee for its opinions.

Logger soccer team off to 3-1 start

The Loggers traveled to Hayward, Friday, April 10 and got their first win of the season 2-0. The Phillips girls counted enough Hayward uniforms to field three teams - Hayward's roster had 25 varsity players and 10 JV players on it. Despite this show of power by numbers, the Loggers pulled out the first win of the season.

Our Town Players brings back much-loved comedy play

There are lights, music and laughter streaming from the old Ogema Town Hall building on Highway 86. The Our Town Players are practicing for their latest play, the 10th they have performed since 2006.

Sitting in the front row of the otherwise empty auditorium, director Joyce Summers reads silently off the script, lip-syncing with the actors rehearsing on stage. By this time, she's memorized the entire play and can call out line reminders when actors slip up. They still have a couple weeks to master the performance, but they are all clearly well-accustomed to their roles in the play.

Natural Connections: Fairyland

It was a beautiful day for a hike in Fairyland. This State Natural Area is named for the “relatively undisturbed old growth hemlock hardwood forest” that forms its core. Stands of mature, second-growth hardwoods surround the hemlocks, and ephemeral ponds poke holes up to the sky through the hemlocks’ dense green canopy. This forest was once owned by Mary Griggs Burke, founder of the Cable Natural History Museum. Legend has it that Mrs. Burke found solace in the groves as a child, and then, as an adult, set up fairy tea parties in the woods for her young friends. The sense of magic remains.

County Forestry manages rising revenues

Administrator Eric Holm had good news for the Forestry and Parks Committee last week reporting that the revenue numbers for the self-sustaining forestry department were hale and hearty.

Last year had been a good year for loggers and conversely, for the Forestry and Parks Department, he said.

"But, this year it looks even better," Holm told committee members last week. "There is some high price stumpage out there and so we'll see how the timber sales come in."

Local groups encourage community members to speak up on healthcare choices

A sudden car accident leaves a victim comatose; the family doesn't know what choice to make with life support. An elderly lady has a stroke; her children aren't certain what decisions she would have made.

These are precisely the reasons that National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) was started, according to Price County Community Bioethics Committee member Beth Hahn.

April 16 is NHDD, a day highlighting the topic in the hopes of sparking those critical conversations between family and loved ones.

Logger softball team young, but have plenty of experience

The Phillips Loggers softball team began their 2015 season with a tournament in Wisconsin Dells where they finished 2-1. They got their Marawood North Conference (MNC) season underway with a 10-2 home loss to Athens Monday, April 13.

After a loss in the Regional Championship game last year, the Loggers will look again to be in contention for an MNC title this year – though they will have to get past Athens and Chequamegon to do so. Those will be no easy tasks as they have to find replacements for two seniors from last year's squad.

Preethi made local school history this past month when she made it to the top 10 contestants in the state level spelling bee in Madison. She is the first PhMS student to compete at this level, and took on 48 other contestants in front of a large audience.

Out of those students, there was only one other student from  CESA 12 – Kelton Couperus from the Mellen School District.

Karen's Korner: Spring in my step…

The warm temps and bright sunshine melted the recent snowfalls quickly, thank goodness. Just as quickly I donned my June Cleaver persona to start the annual spring cleaning ritual. Had to back off a bit though, since before deep spring cleaning must come actual weekly the year 'round cleaning. Hadn't fully realized what damage semi-hibernation can wreak on a household. *yawn" Waking up is hard to do. (Didn't you know? If I believed in reincarnation I'd want to return as a bear...long story for another day.)

Since I've admitted in a previous korner that I am addicted to dishware I won't insult readers by claiming we'd have soon run out of something to eat off of. Plus there are always paper plates.

Highways in crisis, no long term solution in sight

Wisconsin – and the nation – is facing a tremendous crisis as highways fall into growing disrepair and funding falls increasingly short of the mark. Rural areas such as Price County are particularly struggling, as they are low on the priority list and face growing roadblocks to access sufficient funding.

Based on an analysis of Wisconsin roads by the Sierra Club and 1000 Friends of Wisconsin - a citizens’ group that advocates and promotes uses of land, water, and air - titled ‘Wisconsin’s Local Roads Crisis’, 14 percent of Wisconsin's 42,000 miles of rural roads are ranked failed, very poor or poor condition, while 44 percent are in need of immediate repair.

Price County alone has 221 miles of county roadway.

Plan amendment would provide vets more trials, hunting opportunities

WOODRUFF, Wis. - The public has an opportunity to review and comment on a proposed amendment to the master plan of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest that will allow exclusive use of an additional 225 acres in the forest to provide accessible trails and hunting opportunities for veterans.

Camp American Legion was established in 1925 as a restoration camp for sick and disabled veterans of World War I and their dependents. Today the camp serves veterans of all wars, as well as active-duty service members, and their families, who have documented physical or psychological illness, injury, or disability.

An Investment in the future

Article X of the Wisconsin Constitution provides for free public district schools for all children. It also provides for the education of all students regardless of economic class, learning styles, behavioral issues, and abilities. This Article requires taxes for school support, provided for a school fund and distribution of the fund on the basis of school population.

For the past several years our public school system’s programs and services have been cut to the bone. This budget freezes revenue caps and cuts state aids to local schools. This will be continuing the legacy of less. This proposed budget slams the door on our students and is an insult to Wisconsin’s education legacy. This must be stopped and we must insist that our constitutional guarantees to our children be honored.
