Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School junior Connor Rosin dribbles the ball against Stevens Point Pacelli on Friday in Bonduel. Bonduel lost 80-45.

The Bonduel High School boys basketball team struggled in the first of a series of tests against the top of the Central Wisconsin Conference-8 Friday, losing 80-45 to Stevens Point Pacelli in Bonduel.

Pacelli (9-2, 5-1 CWC-8) raced out to a 26-8 lead in the first quarter, led by senior Isaac Elliott’s, who scored 16 of his 20 points in the period. The Cardinals played a tough press defense for most of the game.

“Our kids just didn’t take care of the ball and lost their focus a little bit,” Bonduel coach Duke Copp said. “It’s fundamental things. We’ve worked on it, but, hey, Pacelli is one of the best teams we’ll see all year.”

Even when Bonduel (6-7, 2-4 CWC-8) was able to get by Pacelli’s press, shots refused to fall.

Connor Rosin, a 6-foot-2 junior, led Bonduel with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

Pacelli got 20 points from Brett O’Sullivan and 18 from Jacob Feltz.

With both teams racking up 22 fouls and spending a big chunk of the game in the bonus, Pacelli was a superb 26 of 28 from the free-throw line. Bonduel made 17 of 23 free-throw attempts.

Bonduel took the opportunity in the second half to try some different schemes and get bench players some experience.

Matthew LaBerge, a 5-foot-8 junior, nailed a late 3-pointer that fired up the Bears.

“He’s a great kid,” Copp said. “Always working hard at practice. It was great to see.”

The coach hopes his team will bounce back quickly, with a tough schedule on the horizon.

“We just want to get better each game,” Copp said. “We took a step back tonight and we’re hoping to move forward.”

Pacelli, which went into Friday night tied atop the CWC-8 standings with Amherst (10-2, 4-1 CWC-8) and Shiocton (6-3, 4-1 CWC-8) and only a half game ahead of Iola-Scandinavia (10-2, 4-2 CWC-8), is just the first test for Bonduel, which will face Iola-Scandinavia next week and Amherst on Jan. 28.

Tauchens, Krueger inducted into Bonduel wrestling hall of fame

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 7:39am
By:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School wrestling coach Chris Rank, left, introduces Marlys and Herb Tauchen, who were inducted into the school’s wrestling hall of fame Thursday night in Bonduel.

The Bonduel High School wrestling team took time before Thursday night’s big meet against Wittenberg-Birnamwood to honor three people who have made major contributions to the wrestling program over the years.

Herb and Marlys Tauchen and former wrestler Jason Krueger were inducted into the school’s wrestling hall of fame..

Five of the six sons of Herb and Marlys Tauchen, who have 10 children and 24 grandchildren, were wrestlers at BHS. Dan Tauchen, a junior on this year’s team, is the eighth, and last, of the Tauchens’ grandchildren to go through the program.

“Their sons were very successful back in the day, their grandkids were very successful in the last few years and Danny is the last one,” Bonduel coach Chris Rank said. “We thought this would be a great night to honor them.”

“Herb and Marlys, they come down to the state tournament every year, not only following their grandkids, but our whole team,” Rank said. “It’s exciting to have the chance to honor and recognize them.”

Jason Krueger, a 1998 graduate of BHS, had 110 career wins during his wrestling career. He was a four-year letter winner, a three-time team captain, and won conference championships his sophomore and junior seasons.

“He had a very successful career wrestling for Bonduel,” Rank said. “He was a part of our state championship team in 1998 and when we placed second at state in ‘97. He was an integral part of that championship team and that group of young men.”

Krueger went on to wrestle for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and at one point in his senior season was ranked eighth in the nation before an injury cut his season short.

“I think he may be the only individual to have gone on to wrestle in college, taking it to another level,” Rank said. “We’ve obviously had other athletes go on and do other things, but I’m pretty sure Jason is the only one to do wrestling.”

The BHS wrestling program has been honoring alumni and friends of the program for the last 16 seasons.

“We have quite a list of people that have been inducted already,” Rank said. “It’s a neat thing for us. We’re proud of it. We feel we have a strong history here in Bonduel, as far as wrestling goes, and we thing it’s important to induct these people that have done a fine job of following, supporting and competing for us. It’s an honor to do that.”

Chargers get big win over Bears

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School wrestler Jacob Wudtke, top, battles Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Hunter Kreger on Thursday in Bonduel. Wudtke won a 2-1 decision, but the Chargers won the meet 52-13.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School wrestling team took control of the Central Wisconsin Conference with a 52-13 win Thursday over Bonduel.

“Wittenberg-Birnamwood has a very, very good team,” Bonduel coach Chris Rank said. “They’ve been handling the conference the last several years; this year is probably the best team that they’ve had. Most years we have a legit shot at being conference champions. It doesn’t look like that is going to be the case this year.”

Both of the team’s coaches, though, said the final score didn’t reflect how close the meet really was.

“We always know coming into Bonduel, it’s always going to be tough,” Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Troy Ostrowski said. “I know the score looks like it wasn’t close, but we had a lot of good matches tonight.”

The Chargers, ranked No. 4 in Division 2 in the state by Crossface Magazine, opened the meet with four straight pins to take a 24-0 lead on the hosting Bears. Witt-Birn sophomore August Peplinski pinned Bennett Gunderson in 4:49. Nick Stringfellow (220) pinned Eric Godin in 2:59, and heavyweight John White Wing made short work of Race McClone with a pin in 46 seconds. Stetson Potrykus (106) pinned Scott Gunderson in 52 seconds.

Bonduel, which is ranked No. 9 in Division 3, had to forfeit to Zachary Urquhart at 113 pounds.

Bonduel sophomore Garrett Siolka (120) put up good fight against Ben Vosters, who is ranked No. 9 in the state at 120 pounds. Despite pushing the senior the full three periods, Siolka took a 11-5 loss.

At 126 pounds, Bonduel got on the scoreboard with a win by junior Austin Siolka, who beat Jesse Sprague 7-1 to cut the Chargers’ lead to 33-3. Bonduel’s Travis Wollenberg then beat Gavin Czerwonka 6-3 at 132 pounds.

Witt-Birn senior Bobby Uttecht (138) won a 12-2 decision over Gregg Shafer and teammate Branden Randall (145) beat Sam Kroening by pin in 1:16.

Bonduel’s Dan Tauchen (152) took care of Griffin Magee with a 10-0 decision.

At 160 pounds, Bonduel decided to give a forfeit win to Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Braxton Potrykus, who is ranked No. 6 in the state, and move Mitch Sokolski and Jacob Wudtke both up a weight class.

The strategy almost worked. Wudtke (182) pulled off a 2-1 decision over Hunter Kreger, getting two points on a reversal in the final minute of the match.

“That was a good match,” Rank said. “It ended up about how I had it. I thought we would come out on top in a close one and that was the case.”

Sokolski (170) struggled with Wittenberg-Birnamwood freshman Alex Peplinski, who put together a 6-0 decision to get the win.

“I was impressed with our freshman winning that match,” Ostrowski said.

Ostrowski said his team doesn’t talk about the possibility of winning a conference championship or more.

“We don’t talk about what our goal is,” Ostrowski said. “We just talk about every week getting better.”

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School wrestler Travis Wollenberg, left, and Oconto Falls’ Jake Stoinski compete in the 126-pound semifinal match Saturday at the Brawl in the Falls wrestling tournament.

Austin Siolka led all Bonduel High School wrestlers in winning the 113-pound championship Saturday at the Brawl in the Falls wrestling tournament in Oconto Falls.

The Bears took fourth in the 15-team tournament, scoring 167 points. Kaukauna (200.5) won, followed by Reedsville (178) and Oconto Falls (172.5).

“We probably didn’t do as well as we were hoping to,” Bonduel coach Chris Rank said. “We were hoping to come away with a trophy, first or second place. We came up a little short. Those types of things are going to happen.”

Siolka beat Gillett/Suring’s Garret Kohls in the 113-pound championship match, pinning him in 5 minutes and 52 seconds. Siolka beat Kaukauna’s Dominick Nushart in the quarterfinal and Ashwaubenon’s Montana Richardson in the semifinal.

“He did a nice job,” Rank said. “We had a handful of guys do a very nice job for us.”

Two Bears placed second: Mitch Sokolski (160) and Travis Wollenberg (126).

“They didn’t quite get the championship, but they did a nice job getting to the finals,” Rank said. “They had a great day for us.”

Sokolski lost his championship match against Reedsville’s Elliott Ebert by a 14-3 major decision. He defeated New Holstein’s Jacob Barth in the quarterfinal and Wautoma/Wild Rose’s Marcus Kasuboski in the semifinal.

Wollenberg lost his championship match by pin to Kaukauna’s Nick Arnold. Wollenberg defeated Oconto Falls’ Jake Stoinski 8-0 in the semifinal.

Garrett Siolka (120) took third place by pinning Ashwaubenon’s Spencer Nelsen in 3:46. Jacob Wudtke (170) won his third-place match over Ashwaubenon’s Victorico Perez by a 13-4 major decision. Dan Tauchen (152) also took third with a pin in 5:21 of Gillett/Suring’s Colin Weiss.

“All three of those were really tough weight classes,” Rank said. “We ended up coming up on the short end.”

The coach was happy for the opportunity to see Reedsville, which the Bears will encounter in the Division 3 regional.

“That was nice for us to compete against them and see their team,” Rank said.

Bonduel will now turn its focus to hosting Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Thursday.

“Wittenberg-Birnamwood has a really tough team this year,” Rank said. “We’re a very good team ourselves. … Our goal is to go in and be competitive with them. We want them to know that they’re in for a good match.”

Outnumbered Hawks skating to keep hockey program alive

Sat, 01/11/2014 - 7:37am
By:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Brendan Cummings skates with the puck during hockey practice Wednesday at the Crawford Center in Shawano.

Outnumbered and forced into extra playing time all season, Shawano Community High School hockey players know their struggles are helping to keep the program alive.

The team, which has just 12 players from Shawano and Bonduel, is in its second year of playing a varsity reserve schedule, after leaving the Fox River Classic Conference in 2012.

“A usual hockey team has a minimum of 16. We start out with 12,” coach Tommie CarlinSchauer said. “We’ve had some injuries, so we played our first game with nine players. It’s just tough when you don’t have two full lines. Kids are fighting, though.”

After postponing its first two games of the season, the team has played three games, compiled a 0-3 record and will play as many as eight games over the new few weeks.

“When it gets down to it, the kids just want to play. They want to play hockey,” CarlinSchauer said. “We don’t want to lose the hockey program here because we have a year with low numbers.”

The future of the program should brighten with large freshman classes expected the next two years. There could be enough players in two seasons to return to playing a full varsity schedule, CarlinSchauer said.

CarlinSchauer said his players knew this year would be a struggle, but are sticking it out so the hockey program will continue.

“That 12, with a couple injured, that’s a real teeter-totter on if it’s good to play or not,” CarlinSchauer said. “I have a tendency to worry about that. We have a number of nice players, good players. But do we have enough? Yet I know that if we let the program go this year, we might not get it back for three, four, maybe five years.”

Shawano lost its first game to Merrill 9-1 and then lost to Manitowoc Lincoln 4-3 in overtime after leading 3-0 in the first period. Fatigue played a role in both losses.

“As the game went on, they got tired,” CarlinSchauer said. “They were working hard. The work is not the problem. It’s just that you can’t physically do it, I don’t care who you are. You could be the best players in the world and you can’t be going out there and taking on three shifts in a row rather than getting a 45-second rest.”

The team is made up of two seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and five freshmen, including goalie Brandan Chapman. Senior defenseman Triston Krueger is the team’s captain; sophomore forward Blake Stoss is the assistant captain.

“We’ve got four new freshman who really see the rink well,” CarlinSchauer said. “Our goalkeeper is a freshman and has played very well.”

The next few seasons will determine the long-term success of the program, according to the coach.

“If we get 16 or 22 kids, we’re going to be fine,” CarlinSchauer said. “If we get more freshmen that can play right away, which I believe we are, two or three every year, then you’re looking at something.”

After losing 7-6 in overtime against Stevens Point Thursday at the Crawford Center, the Hawks will hit the road for two games — against Mosinee on Tuesday and Waupaca on Jan. 21 — before returning to the Crawford Center to face Mosinee Jan. 23, a game that was postponed on Dec. 6 because the Hawks didn’t have enough players.

Hawks lose to undefeated Oconto Falls

Sat, 01/11/2014 - 7:34am

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School forward Erika Dunnam (40) tries to keep a ball in bounds against Oconto Falls on Friday in Shawano. Shawano lost 47-28.

The Shawano Community High School girls basketball team couldn’t slow McKenna Larsen and Carly Lemke in a 47-28 loss Friday to Bay Conference foe Oconto Falls in Shawano.

“Oconto Falls is a very tough team,” Shawano coach Ryan Koenig said. “I think they’ll be competing at the top of the conference, if not finishing at the top.”

Larsen and Lemke each scored 18 points for Oconto Falls (6-0, 3-0 Bay). Lemke, a 6-foot-1 senior forward, tallied 14 first-half points, mostly under the basket.

“Offensively, we kind of felt she had the hot hand,” Oconto Falls coach Mike Kaczmarek Jr. said. “We ran a couple of special sets for her, to get her good looks. She was shooting the ball the first half.”

Larsen provided the juice in the second half, scoring 12 of her 18 points after the midpoint break, getting a couple of nice driving layups and a couple of breakaways.

Shawano, which was missing starting point guard Megan Klitzke because of illness, trailed 12-8 after the first quarter, but fell behind 22-12 by halftime. Oconto Falls opened the third quarter with a 11-2 run until Courtney Vomastic hit a 3-pointer to cut the Panthers’ edge to 33-17.

In the fourth quarter, three Oconto Falls’ breakaways — two by Larsen and a third by Bailey Wolf — put the Panthers ahead 43-20 with 4:34 left to play.

Shawano (1-7, 1-4 Bay) managed to close the gap slightly, getting a pair of baskets by Erika Dunnam, a 6-1 sophomore forward who also had five rebounds.

Lindsey Kurtz, a 5-9 senior forward, led Shawano with seven points and seven rebounds.

Turnovers, a problem for Shawano most of the season, were again a factor. The Hawks had 24 turnovers to Oconto Falls’ six.

“We still had too many turnovers,” Koenig said. “We’re not learning from our mistakes, that’s the most disappointing part. We have a young team, but that’s not an excuse anymore.”

Kaczmarek said his team played unevenly, despite the 19-point win.

“Kind of what I expected after a 13-day layoff,” Kaczmarek said. “We have to get back in the flow of things here.”

A big first half helped the Bonduel High School girls basketball team withstand Weyauwega-Fremont forward Morgan Wilson’s 21 points in a Central Wisconsin Conference-8 matchup Thursday in Bonduel.

Bonduel held on to win 46-39.

The Bears (7-1, 3-1 CWC-8) jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter and expanded it to a 20-point lead shortly after halftime, but Wilson’s third quarter explosion kept the game close. Wilson, a 5-foot-10 senior, scored 12 of her points in the third quarter, including two 3-pointers.

“She took over the game right there,” Bonduel coach Missy Dowden said. “She wanted it. We didn’t box her out well. She’s very strong and we let her push us around.”

The coach said her team was sluggish in the second half after having a four-day break from practice because of the recent cold snap.

“They had legs in the first half, but in the second half, I think we tired out,” Dowden said. “Some of their cuts, we weren’t getting there.”

The Indians (5-4, 1-3 CWC-8) managed to close to within eight points with 4 minutes left on a Karissa Akey basket, but Bonduel forward Jennifer Dowden, a 5-11 junior, answered to put the Bears back up 40-30.

With 5.8 seconds left in the game Alyssa Goode hit a 3-pointer to cut the Bears’ lead to 44-39

“They shot outstanding here in the third and fourth quarter,” Missy Dowden said. “They were hitting 3s.”

Weyauwega-Fremont couldn’t contain the Bears on the ensuing inbound and a couple of passes put the ball in the hands of Courtney Schmidt, who was open under the basket for an easy bucket to seal the game.

Jennifer Dowden finished with 16 points to lead the Bears. She also had three assists, five steals, two blocks and seven rebounds. Sophomore Taylor Weier led the team in rebounds with eight.

Bonduel built its first-half lead mostly at the free-throw line, getting 12 points on 14 attempts from the charity stripe.

It was the first win for Bonduel over Weyauwega-Fremont in a season and a half after getting swept by the Indians last season.

“It was a nice win,” Missy Dowden said. “It’s a nice stepping stone for getting us going into the rest of the season.”

Soper eyes third trip to state

Thu, 01/09/2014 - 8:03am
By:

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Shawano Community High School swimmer Zach Soper dives into the pool during the 100-yard butterfly in a dual meet against Lakeland Union on Dec. 19 in Shawano. Soper’s goals this season include his third trip to the state meet.

Shawano Community High School swimmer Zach Soper came up just short against Grafton senior Al Nenning for the 100-yard backstroke state championship in February.

That moment has stuck with Soper, now a junior, as he works toward his goal of making it to the WIAA Division 2 meet in Madison for the third time.

“I never really forgot about it. I think about it every day when I’m practicing, thinking about that moment and just thinking about how it felt to get second,” Soper said. “I don’t want it to happen again. I’m just going to try harder and try to get first.”

As much as he’s thought about that race, it’s been the success of his teammates that has motivated Soper this season.

Shawano coach Walberto Colon said success comes from the team’s three core values.

“The three values we work on here are commitment, hard work and respect,” Colon said. “Those are three key things that will make him successful. Not only him, but his teammates as well.”

So far, it’s been working. Last month the team beat Lakeland Union, last year’s Great Northern Conference champion and a team Shawano hasn’t beaten the last few years.

The win helped the team bond.

“The win against Lakeland really brought us together as a team,” Soper said. “We were celebrating in the locker room. It just really brought everybody together, got everyone more excited about the season.”

Shawano got the win despite having more than a few swimmers who are new to the sport.

“With more people, there’s newcomers who haven’t ever swam competitively before,” Soper said. “We’ve had to teach them, and they’ve really come along and are getting better. Everybody learned really quickly, and everybody is doing really well.”

The Hawks will get a rematch with Lakeland Union on Jan. 30 in Minocqua and then compete in the Great Northern Conference meet in Rhinelander on Feb. 7.

Colon said Soper and the team have to focus on those tasks before focusing on state.

“Even though we won, there is still a lot to learn,” Colon said.

If he makes a third trip to state, though, Soper said he’ll be more comfortable than ever.

“I know what it’s like to be at state, so I won’t be overwhelmed by anything,” he said. “I’ve just tried to work harder and focus on different things this year, focus on things I may have messed up before.”

The experience he gained the last two seasons has made him a more focused swimmer, he said.

“I feel a lot better. Even last year I felt better,” Soper said. “I was more relaxed throughout the season. This year I’m feeling really good, and I have more control. I don’t get nervous as often. I just go out there and do my best as often as I can.”

Meisner pinned Green Bay West/Southwest’s Jordan Machuca 1:40 into their 182-pound championship match. Meisner pinned Waupun’s Reyes Ramos in 36 seconds in the semifinal round.

Bears end 2-game skid

Gerrard Diaz, [email protected]

Leader Photo by Gerrard Diaz Bonduel High School forward Zach Zernicke takes a shot during a nonconference game against Suring on Friday in Bonduel. Bonduel won 62-50.

Zach Zernicke scored a season-high 21 points, Hunter VanderLinden added 11 and the Bonduel High School boys basketball team ended a two-game losing streak Friday with a 62-50 win over nonconference foe Friday in Bonduel.

The Bears (5-6, 1-3 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) started the game aggressively and held Suring to just eight points in the first quarter—an accomplishment for a defense that gave up 63 and 71 points in its last two losses.

“It just feels good to win a game,” Bonduel coach Duke Copp said. “We’ve been struggling a little bit lately. We wanted to be more intense and play harder on defense. I thought we did a really good job in the first half.”

Bonduel held Suring forward Tyler Fisher to 10 points through the first three quarters, before giving up eight to the 6-foot-4 senior in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve been giving up far too many points,” Copp said. “We watch the tape and we see breakdowns. We see simple little breakdowns that we shouldn’t be seeing. Things we can do better and learn from. We’re working on that.”

VanderLinden, a 5-11 junior, led Bonduel in the first half with nine points.

“He had a great start for us,” Copp said. “He had some nice shots. He plays hard all the time. I never worry about his effort.”

Zernicke, a 6-4 senior, came on in the second half, scoring 14 of his 21 points after the midpoint.

“He had a nice night in Crivitz the other night,” Copp said. “When he’s aggressive, he does well. He’s a good athlete, hustles down the court.”

The Bears also got burst from Hunter Berry coming off the bench to score a couple of baskets in the second quarter.

“Hunter Berry I thought came off the bench and played a really good game,” Copp said. “He gives us a spark. Little guy, 5-5, never gets a call, but he plays like crazy.”

Berry finished the day with five points.

Suring (3-5, 1-4 Marinette & Oconto) struggled to make a significant dent in Bonduel’s lead in the second half.

Copp said the team is going to focus on defense going forward.

“We’re giving up high 50s, almost 60 points a game,” Copp said. “That’s just not going to get it done. It’s just a matter, I think, of effort and doing things the way they need to be done.”

The Bonduel High School girls basketball team beat Sturgeon Bay 47-25 in a nonconference game Friday in Sturgeon Bay.

The Bears (6-1, 2-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) jumped out big in the third quarter, outscoring Sturgeon Bay (3-4, 2-3 Packerland) 12-3 to take a 33-18 lead.

“We worked on our defense tonight,” Bonduel coach Missy Dowden said. “We haven’t been able to work on it through the first couple games.”

Sturgeon Bay tried two different defenses to slow Bonduel down, but was forced out of both by quick scores by the Bears.

Jennifer Dowden, a 5-foot-11 junior forward, led the team with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Taylor Weier had eight points and 10 rebounds.

“Taylor Weier stepped up real well tonight,” Missy Dowden said.

Alexa Reinke and Deanna Zernicke both added five points each.

The Bears are off until Thursday, when they play CWC-8 foe Weyauwega-Fremont (5-2, 1-2 CWC-8), but the coach is satisfied with her team’s play.

“I like what I see,” Missy Dowden said. “We still have a learning curve and some things to straighten out and get fixed here. They are really coming around and understanding things. I was a little nervous having the two weeks off.”
