RTÉ News: Wearing skinny jeans could pose a health risk

"We were surprised that this patient had such severe damage to her nerves and muscles", Dr. Thomas Kimber of Australia’s Royal Adelaide Hospital told NBC News.

Relaxed fit, people. Relaxed fit.

The woman regained the ability to walk unaided after being treated at a hospital for four days, according to the report.

Skinny jeans may seem like all fun and games until they cut off your circulation.

As she lost use of her legs, the lady tripped and fell to the ground, where she lay for several hours. The skinny jeans were so tight on the woman that doctors had to cut them off of her. The Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry reported the woman's story along with a warning that wearing skinny jeans over a period of time can be risky and is not recommended.

That evening, she developed numbness in her feet and had difficulty walking.

The unnamed woman was helping a relative move house so she spent the day squatting while wearing the tight trousers.

Wearing skinny jeans can hurt more than your self esteem!

Doctors at the Royal Adelaide ran a series of tests, and were initially puzzled when they discovered that the woman’s feet, ankles, and toes had "almost no muscle strength", but her legs above the knees appeared to be normal.

"We believe it was the combination of the squatting and tight jeans that caused the problem", Kimber said in the report.

Doctors found evidence of muscle and nerve damage - the result of prolonged squatting, which reduces blood supply to the lower leg, made worse by the pressure exerted by the constraining jeans.

Medics said it was the most serious medical case they had heard of relating to skinny jeans, adding previous side-effects of wearing the fashion pants were limited to lesions of the thigh.
