Antigo Student Death Brings Bullying to the Surface

The topic of bullying and cyber-bullying has been on the forefront a lot recently and now with the death of an Antigo Student, it has reared it's ugly head again.

We are all hypocrites, myself included and it seems as though there are varying definitions of what people consider to be bullying.

I am seeing people putting the blame on the parents but can the parents really control it? Where do the kids learn it from? How do we put an end to that?

Actually the parents who are saying such, I have witnessed those people acting in bullying ways, so again, we are hypocrites.

The news stations are commonly talking about "stop the bullying", but, yet, what are they doing? Some of the stories that they show could be considered bullying, actually, this makes me think about the Marathon County Sheriff. It sure seems like someone could easily construe the media as bullying him into early retirement.

If you don't like my opinion and try to shove yours down my throat, isn't that also bullying?

We, as a people, need to look at ourselves and REALLY stop and think about what we are gaining by bullying and how we can stop it from happening all together. I do not see an easy way to do that, since this whole society is so involved in ME and MY possessions, etc., that we are not seeing the big picture.

We can all sit around on the internet and claim how terrible bullying is and act as though we don't do that, but when we are with others, are we talking badly about people, making fun of them and laughing? If so, then it just shows, again, how hypocritical we are.

My child has been bullied over and over. I, too, keep hearing 'stop the bullying', but it seems NOTHING changes. School officials have no desire/ability to stop the bullies, even when presented with proof. I am so sad this continues.

i was bullied so bad my freshman and sophmore year i left becuase it was so bad. the students where told to stopbut nothing ever stopped them. im not sure what will. there has to be harsher punishment i got a disorderly conduct one year for saying one cuss word but i got cornered in the girls bathroom and shoved and nothing happened! parents be there for your kids, talk to them. And tell them Mr Parise s an amazing counseler. he helped me through everything! even my self harm from being bullied!

There are certainly many hypocrites in this world, and for those who don't know, a hypocrite is someone who thinks it is ok for them to do something but it's not okay for others.
Double-standards, it is everywhere...

Bullying is an endless cycle. From what I have experienced in a school setting some of the teachers bully as much as the kids do. And how often do they turn a blind eye when they see it? I guarantee a lot more often than we as parents think. Most parents try and do everything they can to protect their children but in a school setting its impossible. I'm not trying to put the blame on teachers or anyone but I do believe that alot of the school violence stems right from the school itself.

I was bullied as a child and teen as parents we need to teach our children compassion and empathy. Teach them that's it's okay to talk to someone if is happening and pray that is taken care of. We should also teach them there is as difference between bullying and teasing. I tell my son when the kids tease him for being short that he won't be short forever but that person has to live with being a jerk forever. My heart goes out to that family.

I was bullied in middle school and high school.
I did talk to the school about it
And they did NOTHING, everyone told me to ignore it.. And after Noah's death, those 2 girls that bullied me started saying how bullying is so wrong and it should stop. Excuse me, that is horrible, after years of being bullied and they say that.. So many people are bullied and the people who bully them act like they never do it.. My parents also told me to ignore it, the school would talk to them and they acted like they never did anything. The school sucks after how they push a stop to bullying when they don't do anything about it.. Antigo is a horrible place and I know many people who talked to the school about having other problems And they didn't care.

I am truthfully NOT surprised. My daughter was being bullied for a LONG time-when She brought it to the attention of the School...NOTHING was done. Then when She was physically attacked. SHE got in trouble for it. I talked to the assistant principal and the only thing he had to say was...well-it has to be reported more than ONCE. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! It shouldve been addressed the FIRST time its reported. Now its to the point that EVERY morning is a struggle to get Her to go to School. She wants to be HomeSchooled. I have been hearing ALOT of Parents that are taking it into consideration...just as I am.

My daughter was bullied last year in the first grade. She missed days of school because she was so afraid to go. I had ENOUGH!! I wrote a not so nice letter to the principal of the school, and I also waited with my daughter for her bus to come pick her up, and I boarded with her and walked right up to that child and had a talk with him, and that seemed to work, she no longer is being bullied, and I guarantee that if something like this happens again, I'll be right there as angry as a mama bear, and better stay out of my way!!

Thanks Antigo School District; You’ve Done It Again!

A young man is dead because this district refuses to address the social issue of bullying. My son is in this district, and has reported the same activity since 6th grade. Nothing is ever done. The School Board needs to be a little more concerned about student welfare and safety and less concerned about how its staff is spending its weekends smoking pot. If I had to work for such an organization I would need each weekend to smoke pot to reduce the stress of working in such an environment that refuses to address the real issues, but chooses to mask them as ‘staff’ issues. Bullshit. What this district needs to do is to focus less on the personal lives and fourth amendment rights they are stripping from their employees, and focus more on how to address more serious issues like suicide due to bullying. Members of the school board consider this scenario. If I’m picked up for drunk driving I’m tested for what is running through my veins at the time of the incident. What gives you the right to invade a person’s privacy by searching their urine for substances that are not immediately impairing the individual at the time of the confrontation? It’s a good thing we have an election soon because most of you uneducated idiots need to go away. Random drug testing has prevented quality people from obtaining employment or searching for employment at this district. Random drug testing and invading a person’s privacy for something they did 3 weeks ago at the cabin on the weekend responsibly with other adults is preposterous. This is why we have kids killing themselves. Because we have staff who hate their jobs because their fourth amendment rights are violated frequently. Focus more on the purpose and the mission of your district, and not how you can ‘bring people down’ for smoking a little weed now and then. If I were the administrator of this district I would ban drug testing for all employees and focus that money towards preventing another suicide. What a waste of life. I hope your proud of what you’ve done to this young man and his family.

My daughter went to school from 4k through 12th grade in the Schiocton WI school district, and was bullied beginning in the 6th grade, all the way through High School.. Same scenario, the school district consistently swept the issue under the rug. A friend of hers was also the target of bullying, and ultimately chose to end his life. Did the district take any action to stop the bullying, or even to reduce the activity? NO.. they did not, and deny to this day that they have a bullying problem. I thank God every day that she survived, and is in fact thriving as a Freshman in college.

Then one day an innovative teacher within the district had the vision to start a charter school. She envisioned an environment where kids could learn in a way that suited them, not the school board.. She wanted to create an environment where the kids felt as though they were part of something special, something bigger than they were, and a place where they could feel safe going to school every day, rather than dreading the day & what they might be made to endure at the hand of their classmates. The students of the Shiocton International Leadership Academy had the opportunity to participate in this wonderful, positive, caring, & supportive environment for just 2 school years. Last night, despite the pleas of parents and students alike, the Shiocton school board voted to eliminate the charter school, a decision which was purely financially based. There were so many kids who have blossomed in this environment and who are devastated to lose this wonderful program. I sincerely hope that Shiocton doesn't experience the loss of another child because they do nothing more than turn a blind eye to the bullying that goes on within the school.

My heart goes out to this family as they face this tragedy.

Antigo high school and middle school. i hope you read this and i hope you feel resposible! do you hear how many people where bullied and hurt and NOTHING WAS DONE! i started self harm and so many people ik did as well! it started with that and now look a young innocent man is dead who could have had a life and career a family, even an impact on the world. this disgusts me and so does antigo. the only thing you ever gave me was a high school diploma!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bullying was NOT the cause of this young man's death. Not only did his Mother post to this affect, but the coroner as well. Several concussions led to changes in his personality. Please stay informed. Bullying IS a horrible problem, but not the underlying cause of Noah Simonis' death.

Yes, lets blame this on the School district.....i'm sure they were responsible for this boys death. I'm sure there are a lot of factors leading up to this not just the school.

PERMALINK- SHAME ON YOU!!!!

Too busy with drug war nonsense to do their job. Shameful.

So, are you blaming the victim? That is wrong in more ways than I can even begin to say...

I dont think anyone is blaming the victim at all

It is not the direct fault of this young man's parents at all, but it is the fault of the parents now days. I remember back when I was a child in school and if we did wrong, the wooden ruler came out and ya got a slap on your knuckles, or your ear pulled. The teachers had more right to do more punishment in the class. Now days, they have NO RIGHTS. If the student does do wrong, parents blame it all on the teacher... bad teacher... mean teacher... the list goes on.. when my children got into trouble in school and were punished in school, they were also punished at home. When my son was suspended from school, I went to the school principle and talked to him out right... I explained I understand the needed punishment, but we needed to do a different kind. As my husband and I both worked, so it would be a awesome day for my son at home... no parents.. sleep late... watch TV all day... the list can go on... does this sound like punishment??? Nope.. so we did a step better... he went to school.. but he had to follow the principle around all day... sit in his office..class... etc... my son is now a parent him self..and he said that was his entire worse day of school ever... I also remember when the field out by the school (when it was first built) was nothing but rocks...some kids got into some deep trouble and the school thought a punishment could be have the kids pick rocks.. rather than pay someone to do it.. omg.. the parents of said children went into a fit of rage... how horrible..
Some of the teachers that got busted for the drugs, were the jocks that could do no wrong in school, and never got punished for what they did do wrong. Parents... stop and think about this...is that how you want YOUR kids to turn out?? I went to school with one of them, and as soon as I heard the name...I was like...I am not shocked at all.... same ole punk...just older now.

My son is in 5th grade this year and has told me since the third grade that he has been the subject of bullying, or has friends that have been. I am really interested in finding out what it is that is so bad in the bully's life that makes them feel the need to make everyone else miserable.

What is the real story? Noah's mother is on Facebook saying that it isn't about bullying? Anyone have any facts?

The news reports don't say he died FROM the concussion, just that it was a factor. After the second concussion he "changed"...His mother says it wasnt because of bullying and yet his friends say he was bullied. Parents don't know what goes on at school. I am sure parents want to believe they know what is going on in their childrens lives, but in reality...they have no idea. And for the coroner to claim he can tell that it wasnt from bullying is complete nonsense...The concussion may have changed him and made it harder for him to "deal" with the bullies or teasing. We honestly will never know. Only one person knows the true reason and he can't tell us.

The coroner has some specialized schooling and knows signs and symptoms. Can the end state of these concussions cause this (or anyone) child to take his own life? Yes. In the military, we have many service members who are suffering from mTBI (Mild Traumatic Brain Injury). This is basically a concussion. After multiple tours in Iraq, I finally took it upon myself to seek help. Help that I desperately needed. After the explosions, I am a changed person. And I needed help to see that. Yes, the concussions can cause thoughts of suicide. I am living proof of that.

A coroner is not a medical examiner and is an elected position requiring only a high school diploma. A coroner may take some classes but is a very sad excuse for a medical examiner.

Congratulations mike for getting some help!!....so many (especially younger generations) don't want to acknowledge their feelings to adults in fear of having to a see a "shrink" or to be put on meds..(which many Drs like to do)... They need to know its okay to need someone to talk to... I could go into how kids these days don't work like even 10 or more years ago and therefore don't feel good enough or secure enough to let the bs roll off their shoulders...or how people have gotten so MEAN...thereafter no filter anymore to how people act........nonetheless... Tragic to lose a young man who had so much life to live. Condolences to all who knew and loved him...and sorry for the ones who won't.

Drop this. Do you know this family? I do. Who cares if you are nosy and reading Wendy's posts on Facebook and you choose to believe that the coroner's opinion is wrong. I'm pretty sure that you don't know anything except gossip. This whole blog should be removed and you people who are posting your rude opinions when there is a family dealing with a real tragedy should mind your own business and find something better to do with your time. How sad it is to comment on others tragedies. I bet your life is perfect.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Some of you people sicken me and are nothing but a disgrace to this community!

Well stated my friend, We should all leave it alone and let the Family mourn as I went through the loss of a niece last year with My Wife's family and know how hard it is to lose a 16 year old. The Coroner is correct and did perform an autopsy on the child. I was bullied also, but it didn't make me want to die, it just made me stronger later in life by realizing by speaking up for myself when I needed to, it made a difference in my life and the life of others, besides, what ever happened to the old days of "an Eye For An Eye, A Tooth For A Tooth" If someone teases you kick their ---!

There is nothing good about bullying. No child should have to go through that. Bullying gave me 3 nervous breakdowns by the age of 18. I am in my 40's and suffering flashbacks, nightmares, go through sudden mood changes, panic attacks, all because of bullies. Antigo School District did NOTHING about it. I had to go back later in life, and relearn what I couldn't learn during my grade school, and high school days. While everyone got to enjoy their highschool days, I dreaded them. It was the worse time of my life. Thanks to the Antigo School District, and those bullies who robbed part of my life that I will not be able to relive. Its very sad some of the teachers were involved, and laughed with the bullies as well. I will NEVER EVER support the drug infested Antigo School District, I will never shop in Drug infested Antigo, I will never live near drug infested Antigo, and I will never support the druggie loser welfare cases that make up Antigo. I drove through Antigo, I can't believe how much of a dump the town looks.
