UW students: Budget would lead to increased fees, tuition

Mon, 02/23/2015 - 12:36pm

MADISON (AP) – University of Wisconsin students are warning Gov. Scott Walker’s budget plan would lead to fee and tuition increases.

The United Council of University of Wisconsin Students held a news conference in the state Capitol on Monday to lament Walker’s plan to cut $300 million from the UW System, continue a current tuition freeze for another two years and free the system from state oversight.

Students led by the council’s executive director, Nneka Akubeze, predicted the cuts coupled with the tuition freeze would force schools to raise student fees. They say once the freeze ends the system will raise tuition.

They say they’re starving to study and studying to starve.

The Legislature’s finance committee is set to spend weeks revising Walker’s budget and could change his UW proposals.

Wisconsin union leaders say right to work hurts families

Mon, 02/23/2015 - 12:33pm

MADISON (AP) – Private and public-sector unions are joining together to stop a right-to-work bill that Republicans have put on a fast track to pass in the Wisconsin Legislature within days.

Union leaders said at a Monday news conference that they are urging their members, as well as business owners, to contact state senators to tell them to vote against the bill.

The proposal is moving fast. It was formally introduced Monday, a Senate hearing was set for Tuesday, and the Senate planned to be in session Wednesday to vote on it. The Assembly was expected to act next week.

Sally Feistel, a Steelworkers union leader, says she thinks it’s inevitable the bill will pass the Republican-controlled Legislature.

Feistel says it’s an attack on working families.

Iconic Iwo Jima photo turns 70

Mon, 02/23/2015 - 11:44am

Seventy years ago today, an iconic photo captivated the nation – and an Appleton man was in the middle of it.

On Feb. 23, 1945, during World War II, a group of soldiers and Marines planted an American flag on Mount Suribachi, on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. Associated Press photgrapher Joe Rosenthal captured the moment, and his photo became one of the most recognizable images of the 20th century.

John Bradley of Appleton was one of the military members identified in the photo. After Bradley died, his son James wrote the best-selling book “Flags of Our Fathers” about the servicemen’s experience in the battle and their struggles with the resulting fame.

The photo itself was the subject of controversy; many believed it had been staged. In the video above, the Associated Press takes a look back at the events of that day and how rumors of staging resulted from a misunderstanding.

Mon, 02/23/2015 - 10:48am

TOWN OF COTTAGE GROVE (AP) – A home in Dane County that was supposed to house a convicted sex offender has gone up in flames.

Sheriff Dave Mahoney says an arsonist is suspected of setting the fire that destroyed the Town of Cottage Grove house Sunday night.

The same home was targeted by a suspected arsonist in December. The house was repaired, but is now considered a total loss.

WKOW-TV reports Howard Nyberg was expected to move into the home by the end of the month. The state Department of Corrections leased the home from a private citizen.

Mahoney says some leads on the suspected arson have been developed after talking with neighbors.

Kayla Mueller’s brother: Swap with Taliban raised ISIS demands

Mon, 02/23/2015 - 10:12am

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) – The brother of an American woman who was killed after spending months as a hostage of Islamic State militants says Kayla Mueller’s situation worsened after the government traded five Taliban commanders for a captive U.S. soldier.

The militants increased their demands after the May swap for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, Eric Mueller told NBC’s “Today” in an interview that aired Monday.

“That made the whole situation worse because that’s when the demands got greater,” he said. “They got larger. They realized that they had something.”

Mueller’s death was confirmed Feb. 10 by her family and U.S. officials. The Islamic State group claimed she died in a Jordanian airstrike, but U.S. officials have not confirmed that. The Pentagon said it didn’t know how she was killed.

The 26-year-old international aid worker, who grew up in Prescott, Arizona, was captured in August 2013 after leaving a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Aleppo, Syria.

Mueller’s brother and parents spoke to “Today” host Savannah Guthrie. The family has declined repeated requests for an interview with The Associated Press.

The young woman’s father, Carl Mueller, said that the United States’ willingness to swap for Bergdahl but not pay ransom or allow ransom to be paid for his daughter “was pretty hard to take.”

“I actually asked the president that question when we were in the White House,” Carl Mueller said without elaborating.

Some U.S. lawmakers were outraged by the exchange of five Taliban commanders held at the Guantanamo Bay prison for Bergdahl, an Idaho native who left his post in Afghanistan and was captured and held by the Taliban for five years.

President Barack Obama’s administration has defended the swap. The Joint Chiefs of Staff unanimously supported the exchange, insisting that the United States has a sacred commitment to men and women who serve that it will never leave anyone behind on the battlefield.

Meanwhile, Kayla Mueller’s mother said in the TV interview that she was still “in denial” about her daughter’s death.

“I still expect Kayla to come through the door,” Marsha Mueller said.
