Hillary Clinton to announce presidential campaign on Sunday

Fri, 04/10/2015 - 8:35am

WASHINGTON (AP) – Hillary Rodham Clinton will launch her long-awaited 2016 presidential campaign on Sunday, according to people familiar with her plans.

Clinton will first announce her campaign for the Democratic nomination with an online video posted on social media. She’ll then make stops in key early voting states, including Iowa and New Hampshire, where she’ll hold small events with voters.

The former secretary of state is making her second presidential bid and enters the race in a strong position to succeed her one-time rival, President Barack Obama.

Clinton appears unlikely to face a stiff primary opponent, though a handful of lower-profile Democrats have said they are considering their own campaigns.

If elected, the former first lady would be the nation’s first female president.

People familiar with Clinton’s plans spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss them publicly.

Fri, 04/10/2015 - 7:49am

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Police say an officer was injured when he was pinned by a stolen vehicle in Milwaukee.

Authorities say the officer’s partner fired at the driver of the stolen car who had the officer pinned between the door of his squad and the door frame early Friday morning. The officers say they saw two people get into the stolen car outside a pizza restaurant and tried to stop the car before the driver accelerated and hit the officer. The driver and a female passenger sped away.

The 35-year-old officer was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Snow in northern Wisconsin, record rain to the south

Fri, 04/10/2015 - 7:26am

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Southern Wisconsin is dealing with record rainfall and flooding while residents to the north are getting another round of snow.

Some schools, including Antigo and Crandon, are delaying the start of classes Friday as accumulating snow slows travel in northern Wisconsin. Although the calendar has turned to spring, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Florence, Forest, Vilas and Oneida counties.

Forecasters predicted up to 6 inches of snow before the weather system exits the region Friday.

To the south, Milwaukee received about 2½ inches of rain Thursday. Madison also broke a record with 1½ inches of rainfall.

West Allis police investigating shooting that killed man

Fri, 04/10/2015 - 6:46am

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) – Authorities are searching for at least one suspect in a shooting that left a man dead and a woman injured just outside of Milwaukee.

The double shooting took place about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in an alley in a West Allis neighborhood. Police were called after the woman involved in the shooting was able to seek help at a nearby home.

The responding officers found a man dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where her condition wasn’t immediately known as of Thursday night.

Police say it’s unclear what caused the shooting. An investigation is ongoing.

The names of the victims haven’t been released by authorities.

Inspirational basketball player dies of cancer

Fri, 04/10/2015 - 5:59am

Lauren Hill, the 19 year old woman from Lawrenceburg, Indiana who captured hearts as she lived out her dream to play her first college basketball game, has died.

Hill suffered from a rare form of brain cancer called DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma).

Even more rare was the remarkable courage with which Hill fought her disease to realize her dreams, the first of which was to play in a college basketball game.

The freshman accomplished that when she joined her Mount Saint Joseph teammates on the court last November, in front of 10,000 fans at Xavier’s Cintas Center.  She scored the first points of the game, creating an inspiring moment.

She went on to play in four games during the season, before the progression of her disease made it impossible to take to the court.

The rest of her dreams focused on others.

Hill’s efforts helped raise more than $1.5 million to go directly to DIPG research from the group, “The Cure Starts Now”.

Hill knew that research would not save her, but she often talked about helping to find the home run cure to fight all cancers.

Hill outlasted all expectations, fighting through difficult days, always able to find a reason to smile through her pain.

Authorities: 1 dead, 7 hurt in Illinois town after tornado

Fri, 04/10/2015 - 2:45am

FAIRDALE, Ill. (AP) – Supercell thunderstorms produced a large tornado that touched down Thursday night in northern Illinois, killing one person and injuring seven others in one tiny community as severe weather pummeled the Midwest.

One person was killed in Fairdale, an unincorporated town of about 200 residents, and seven were taken to area hospitals for their injuries, Matthew Knott, division chief for the Rockford Fire Department, said at a news conference early Friday.

Every home in the town was affected, authorities said. DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said in a news release that approximately 15 to 20 were totally destroyed.

Authorities said that they were fairly confident there were no more victims among the debris but that they would be working Friday to account for every single resident, including those who may have left town before the storm.

The National Weather Service tweeted around 7 p.m. that a tornado was on the ground in nearby Rochelle and urged residents to seek shelter immediately.

Robin Biggs, an employee at the Super 8 motel in Rochelle, which is about 80 miles west of Chicago, said she took video of the storm, which she said “took everything out in its path.”

“I have lived her 18 years, and I have never seen a tornado that big or stay on the ground that long. … This just stayed down and went all the way across the horizon,” she said.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian Van Vickle said in a news conference that about 20 homes there were severely damaged or destroyed, but no deaths or significant injuries were reported. Ogle County is adjacent to DeKalb County.

Van Vickle said 12 people were trapped in the basement of Grubsteakers, a Rochelle restaurant that collapsed during the storm.

One of those rescued from the restaurant, Raymond Kramer, 81, told Chicago’s WLS-TV that he was trapped with 11 others in the storm cellar for 90 minutes. They were freed only after emergency crews removed debris that had fallen over them. He said none of those rescued was injured.

Kramer said he and his wife pulled over at Grubsteakers just moments before the tornado struck. He said he was taking photos of the storm from the doorway when the restaurant owner ordered everyone into the storm cellar.

“No sooner did we get down there, when it hit the building and laid a whole metal wall on top of the doors where we went into the storm cellar,” Kramer said. “When the tornado hit, we all got a dust bath. Everyone in there got shattered with dust and debris falling out of the rafters.”

Trees were uprooted, power lines were down and debris was everywhere surrounding the restaurant Thursday night.

The tornado was part of a storm that tracked across at least five counties, according to the Weather Service.

Radar and reports from trained spotters also show the storms produced “at the very least” one other tornado in northern Illinois.

Three damage survey teams will assess the areas tomorrow to determine the exact location and magnitude of the tornadoes.

The severe weather, the region’s first widespread bout, forced the cancellation of more than 850 flights at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and dozens of others at the city’s Midway International Airport.

The National Weather Service’s “enhanced risk” area stretched from northeast Texas to Michigan, Wisconsin and across the upper Midwest. Forecasters say Philadelphia, Washington and other parts of the Atlantic coast could see the same weather patterns Friday, including Augusta, Georgia, where the Masters golf tournament is taking place through the weekend.

“It’s quite an expansive area,” said Greg Carbin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

A severe thunderstorm that brought high winds and rain through East Texas on Thursday night damaged the roof of a nursing home in Longview, causing its evacuation. No injuries were immediately reported. Thousands were without power in the region.

Earlier Thursday, the Davenport, Iowa, office of the Weather Service said it had received multiple reports of tornadoes in Scott and Clinton counties in the far eastern part of the state. At least one tornado had touched down earlier Thursday evening in rural Donahue, about 15 miles north of Davenport. The Weather Service had no reports of injuries from those storms.

Minor injuries were reported Thursday in central Missouri when storms toppled trees, utility poles and billboards.

Timber Rattlers fall in season opener

Thu, 04/09/2015 - 11:05pm

BURLINGTON, IA – The Burlington Bees defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-3 in a breezy 2015 season opener at Community Field on Thursday night. Bees starting pitcher Sean Newcomb struck out nine and allowed one run on two hits over five innings to collect his first professional victory. In all, four Burlington pitchers racked up sixteen strikeouts of Timber Rattlers hitters.

Burlington (1-0) struck quickly and made the Rattlers pay for a miscue. Wisconsin starting pitcher Victor Diaz walked Caleb Adams with one out in the bottom of the first and appeared to get Andrew Daniel to popout to left for the second out. But, wind gusts of nearly 40 miles per hour carried the ball deeper than Brandon Diaz thought it would go. Diaz got back to the ball and had it in his glove, but dropped it before securing it for the second out. That error put runners on second and third with one out. Fran Whitten, who would collect four hits in the game, was next and he singled to left to drive in the runs for a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin (0-1) got a run back on a wind-blown triple by Jose Pena in the fourth inning. Newcomb walked Brandon Diaz with one out and Pena’s routine fly to right nearly carried out of the ballpark. The ball hit off the top of the wall 365’ from the plate for an RBI triple.

The Bees pulled away against the Wisconsin bullpen. Harvey Martin allowed a run in the fifth inning on a Natanael Delgado sacrifice fly. Then, Burlington sent eight men to bat in sixth inning against Orlando Torrez and scored three runs. A two-run single by Jake Yacinich and a sac fly off the bat of Daniel in the big frame pushed Burlington’s lead out to 6-1.

The Rattlers rallied for a run in the top of the seventh. David Denson, who walked three times in Thursday’s game, coaxed a free pass from reliever Jonah Wesley with one out. Jake Gatewood greeted Tyler Carpenter to the game with a line drive triple over the head of the centerfielder to drive in Denson.

Brandon Gildea and Michael Hermosillo put the game away for the Bees in the bottom of the eighth against Tyler Linehan. Gildea singled with the bases loaded to drive in one run. Hermosillo, the #9 hitter in Burlington’s order who reached base five times in the game, singled in two more runs and the Bees were up 9-2.

Pena drew a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth against reliever Jordan Piche, went around to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch to account for the final run of the game.

Four Bees pitchers held Wisconsin to just three hits in the game and the Rattlers were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Burlington hitters knocked out thirteen hits and took advantage of ten walks handed out by Timber Rattlers pitchers. The Bees also went 7-for-19 with runners in scoring position on Thursday night.

Game two of the season-opening series is Friday night at Community Field. Cy Sneed is set to make his Timber Rattlers debut as the scheduled starting pitcher. Burlington has named Michael Bolaski as their starter. Game time is 6:30pm.

Military statues planned for Green Bay business district

Thu, 04/09/2015 - 9:14pm

GREEN BAY – Military Avenue already has a patriotic name, but now there’s a push to give the roadway a more patriotic identity.

The Military Avenue Business District is looking at putting up statues along the street to honor area veterans.

“Military Avenue itself as some people are aware is kind of named after the old Military Road from Fort Howard, so the history in this area of Military goes back over 170 years,” said Dan Perron, Executive Director, Military Avenue Business District.

The business district is hoping new statues will help honor that history.

“I’m a veteran myself. I think it would be a great thing to start honoring veterans on Military Avenue throughout history,” said Perron.

One thought is to have the statues be of actual Green Bay veterans, with all military branches represented.

“I think it’s fantastic. It gives Military finally its own identity and you can never pay too much homage to the military,” said Brian Rouse, Owner, Bay Area Diamond Co.

Rouse says he would consider putting one of the statues in front of his business.

“I think if the statues are done right, it will bring people in and I do believe that done right, different parades and things could be held from the different branches of the military, next to their statues,” said Rouse.

If the statues look like current plans call for, it could cost about $150,000. The goal is to then add more, less expensive statues over several years. The plan is donation dependent.

“We’re still in the initial concept phase. This is not something we have budgeted, but it’s something we want to start talking about to see about private donations,” said Perron.

Papermakers looking for a longer postseason run

Thu, 04/09/2015 - 9:00pm

KIMBERLY — The Kimberly girls soccer team has shared the last three Fox Valley Association titles but that success has not translated into the postseason, where the Papermakers have not made the state tournament since 2011.

OK, a three-year absence at a state tournament is hardly a drought, but the Papermakers have been so successful in one of the best Division 1 conferences in the state you would think they would’ve figured a way to get back to Uihlein Soocer Park in Milwaukee during this run.

Maybe this is the year.

The Papermakers, who lost in a regional final last season to rival Appleton North, lost six players who received all-conference recognition a season ago, but have opened in a positive way with three straight 1-0 wins. It’s early, but the Papermakers have goals they want to meet.

“Obviously, we want to win conference to start,” senior Sabrina VandenHeuvel said. “The goal is always there to get to state.

Right now all we’re looking for is a ‘W,’ obviously; get better every day, work on scoring, obviously. The shutouts are also important, obviously. The one-goal (wins) are what we’re looking for. Right now, it’s OK, we’re not satisfied.”

Prior to this three-year title run in the FVA the Papermakers had exactly zero league titles. Neenah has dominated the league forever and the last decade Appleton North has become a force.

Kimberly’s rise has given the FVA a “Big Three” and coach Kristin Ruhsam-Tegelman said the standard has been set for this year’s team.

“The teams that have become before this team have really set the standard,” she said. “I do think they have got us there with the Appleton Norths and Neenahs of the conference. It’s nice to be thought of.

“The girls have worked really hard for this program and it’s nice to make a little name for ourselves.”

Kimberly’s name is big in the FVA, but when the weather gets warm and the postseason arrives, the Papermakers want to make an impression outside the area.

“I think this year is definitely huge for us,” said senior Kenzie Heck. “Everyone’s buying in on everything, everyone’s staying focused and everyone’s coming to practice and working hard. I’m really excited to see where we can go this year.”

Added VandenHeuvel: “We’re always looking to prepare for the postseason. It’s obviously what we’ve been trying to do for the past three years and obviously we didn’t execute. It’s on my mind every day. That’s obviously what we’re shooting for all season.”

Spieth has 64 for best opening round at Masters in 19 years

Thu, 04/09/2015 - 8:12pm

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Jordan Spieth pulled off the unthinkable Thursday. With the best opening round in 19 years, he managed to make the Masters about a lot more than the Grand Slam bid of Rory McIlroy and the curious return of Tiger Woods.

Spieth was must-see TV with his 8-under 64 on a steamy afternoon at Augusta National.

“It’s one of the better rounds I’ve ever played,” he said.

That wasn’t the case for McIlroy, though his round wasn’t awful. The world’s No. 1 player saved par four times on the front nine and scratched out a 71. Woods had three birdies in his round of 73, and while it was the first time since 2007 that he shot over par in the first round of the Masters, it was looked upon as progress. Plus, his short game looked like it was close to being back to normal.

But the day belonged to Spieth, a 21-year-old Texan who at least got into the Masters record book as the youngest to lead after the first round.

An even more significant record was within his reach, and he didn’t even know it.

Spieth ran off six birdies in a seven-hole stretch to reach 8 under through 14 holes, and the last of those birdies summed up a day when hardly anything went wrong. He hit a 7-iron out of the pines and began barking instructions to the golf ball as he often does. He didn’t realize it smacked right into the pin and settled a few feet away until he heard the reaction from delirious fans around the green that suspected they were watching something special.

Almost.

Spieth hit hybrid over the green on the par-5 15th, chipped cautiously up the slope and three-putted from the fringe for a bogey. He closed with a 20-foot birdie putt for his 64, the best first-round score at Augusta since Greg Norman’s 63 in 1996. It gave Spieth a three-shot lead over Ernie Els, Jason Day, Justin Rose and Charley Hoffman.

Spieth was thinking about 62. He had never shot 10-under par as a pro.

I wasn’t aware what the course record was here, let alone that it actually would have been the lowest round in major championship history. So that’s a little frustrating,” Spieth said before he paused with a wry smile. “But I’m certainly OK with the day.”

It wasn’t that big of a surprise.

Spieth shared the 54-hole lead last year at Augusta with Bubba Watson until a four-shot swing over the last two holes of the front nine as Watson pulled away. Plus, he might have been the hottest player coming into this Masters.

He won at Innisbrook in a three-man playoff. He was runner-up at the Texas Open. And he lost in a three-man playoff at the Houston Open just four days ago. The biggest challenge he faced was to keep his expectations from growing taller than a Georgia pine, and to make sure he was plenty rested.

Whatever the formula, it worked.

“What a player,” Els said after a 67, his best score at the Masters since the day Phil Mickelson beat him with a birdie on the last hole in 2004. “You just cannot see this kid not win many, many majors. I think he is by far the most balanced kid I’ve seen. Jordan, he’s got that little tenacity to him and he’s really got a fighting spirit, and he’s the nicest kid in the world. … He’s a special kid.”

Els played the par 5s in 5 under and briefly had the lead until Spieth went on his birdie spree. Hoffman finished with an eagle and two birdies over his last four holes.

Day looked to be the most dangerous. Twice a contender at Augusta in the last four years, he made five straight birdies on the back nine until he lost momentum with a bogey from the bunker on the 17th. Still, three shots behind after one round wasn’t a bad place to me.

McIlroy has more work.

Coming off successive major victories to close out last year, McIlroy needs only a green jacket to become the sixth player with the career Grand Slam. He has never started a Masters with this much historic significance in play, or this much attention. And he smashed this opening drive right down the middle.

The rest of his game was a bit off. He hooked a drive into the hazard on the par-5 second and had to scramble for par. He stubbed a chip short of the green on the 350-yard third hole and had to fight for another par. McIlroy picked up two birdies on the par 5s on the back nine to salvage his start.

“It could have been a round that got away from me,” McIlroy said. “I just stayed patient, realizing that it’s a 72-hole tournament. It was good to get into red numbers.”

That wasn’t that hard to achieve on a day of soft conditions that made even the tough pin positions a little more accessible. Thirty players in the 97-man field broke par.

Woods wasn’t one of them.

He opened with a three-putt bogey from about 40 feet. He had one bad adventure on the ninth and escaped with bogey. But there was not a sign of struggle from his short game, except for a bunker shot on the par-3 fourth hole that went over the green.

Most telling was early on the back nine. Woods saved par from the bunker right of the green on No. 10. Facing one of the scariest shots on the course, he pitched beautifully to save par on the 11th. And after a tee shot into the water on No. 12, his wedge to 2 feet allowed him to make bogey.

“It’s my strength again,” Woods said.

But he was nine shots behind, and that was going to take a strong effort.

Wild weather tonight around the state

Thu, 04/09/2015 - 6:44pm

Strong to severe thunderstorms and heavy wet snow tonight depending on where you live in Wisconsin

There is a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for our southern counties until 11 PM and a Winter Weather Advisory for our northwest counties until 10 AM tomorrow. You can see the latest watches and warnings on our alert page here: http://fox11online.com/weather-alerts/

A major spring storm will sweep over the state tonight and it will bring a wide variety of weather to the area, and even to any single location. For example, Green Bay could see scattered thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds until 11 PM and then may switch to wet snow around 4 AM and see some slushy accumulation on the ground by the drive to work tomorrow morning.

Generally the thunderstorms will be early tonight and through the southern and lakeshore portions of the area. The strongest thunderstorms may have hail and gusty winds along with brief heavy rain and lightning. By about 11 PM the thunderstorm threat will end. The rain will begin mixing over to wet snow over the northwest parts of the area around midnight and that change over will slowly work east between 1 and 5 AM. Most of the area north of Green Bay will see at least some snow. The heaviest snow and most significant accumulations will occur in northcentral Wisconsin where 7-10” may fall north of Rhinelander. For Forest, Florence, and Langlade counties, amounts will likely be between 2-5 inches by 10 AM tomorrow morning.

Behind the storm tomorrow will be windy with winds gusting to 30 mph for much of the day. Then significantly warmer weather moves in for the weekend with sunshine and highs jumping into the 60’s.

You can also monitor weather conditions 24/7 using the FOX 11 Weather app. For more information on the app and where to download it, click here.
