Wed, 04/22/2015 - 7:20am

VATICAN CITY (AP) – The Vatican says Pope Francis will visit Cuba before arriving in the United States in the last week of September.

The Vatican spokesman, Rev. Federico Lombardi, confirmed the Cuba leg to reporters Wednesday. He didn’t provide details or dates.

Francis has been credited with helping the United States and Cuba reach their historic rapprochement by writing to the leaders of both countries and having the Vatican host their delegations for the final negotiations. Francis’ visit to Cuba would be a way for him to push the process forward.

He is scheduled to visit three U.S. cities starting around Sept. 23. He will address Congress and meet with President Barack Obama at the White House, address the U.N. in New York and attend a church rally for families in Philadelphia.

Girl, 14, stabbed during robbery on Milwaukee County bus

Wed, 04/22/2015 - 7:12am

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Authorities say a 14-year-old girl was the second person stabbed during a robbery on a Milwaukee County Transit System within two days.

Police say the girl was on a bus Tuesday morning when she was approached by a man who demanded her cellphone before stabbing her. They say a witness chased the girl’s attacker and retrieved her phone, but the suspect escaped.

The girl was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.

Police believe the same suspect was involved in the first incident reported Monday night when a man followed a 21-year-old woman as she got off a bus, demanded her money, stabbed her and fled. The woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that aren’t life-threatening.

An investigation is ongoing.

Gloria Steinem speaks at St. Norbert College

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 10:36pm

DE PERE – Women’s movement leader Gloria Steinem spoke at St. Norbert College Tuesday night.

The speech came with a little controversy.

To the applause of more than 800 people, social activists Gloria Steinem and bell hooks took the stage at St. Norbert College for a conversation about social justice.

When asked how she became a feminist, Steinem recounted covering an abortion hearing as a journalist in the 1960’s.

“Why is it illegal, why is it dangerous, who owns women’s bodies,” said Steinem.

That stance on abortion is what prompted more than 300 alumni, students and parents to complain about Steinem’s visit to St. Norbert College President Thomas Kunkel.

“This is just one of those things we have a difference in opinion about,” said Kunkel.

Catholic bishop David Ricken voiced his strong opposition to Gloria Steinem’s speaking appearance in a column earlier this year. He said he was “mystified” by the invitation from the college.

He went on to say: “One cannot protest domestic violence outside the womb and be in favor of violence and denial of life in the home of the womb.”

A handful of protesters did come out on Tuesday night but most of them were from the outside community. The campus pro-life group Knights for Life, but they did not want to go on camera. Instead, they released a statement.

It read: “While we strongly disagree with Ms. Steinem’s outspoken support of abortion, we affirm her humanitarian work in regards to raising awareness around domestic abuse.”

Kunkel says regardless of the religious affiliation, a college should present all sides of an argument.

“I respect where people are coming from on this. But we feel that we are a college and part of what we do is you have people from all walks come to campus. It doesn’t mean that you necessarily endorse everything they say or what they stand for,” said Kunkel.

Steinem says dialogue between different groups of people remains important.

“That’s an important part of why we’re here on this stage tonight,” said Steinem.

Steinem has spoken at St. Norbert College in the 1970s and 1990s.

Balanced Coverage: who should remove dead deer?

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 9:28pm

OSHKOSH – Who should be responsible for cleaning up dead deer on the side of the road?

The legislature’s budget committee is expected to debate Wednesday the Governor’s idea to cut $700,000 from the DNR, money set aside to clear away road kill. The state pays to remove about 23,000 dead deer in a year.

Have you ever wondered who picks up the dead deer along the highway?

“Right now we don’t really pick up dead deer. It’s subcontracted out to a private individual,” said Bill Demler the Winnebago County Highway Maintenance Superintendent.

Demler told us the way it works now is the state contracts out to different people or companies. Those companies remove the deer within specific counties. If the money were to be removed from the DNR’s budget the responsibility would fall on the county highway departments.

“If the state is not gonna perform the service, someone has to and usually it’s the county that ends up the catch can that takes care of those things,” said Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson.

According to Demler, that’s about $100 per carcass.

“If it’s on a county highway, like if it would be in your front yard you’d call us and we would probably come and pick it up and that would be our cost,” said Demler.

If the dead deer is on a town road, it’s the town’s responsibility though. Most cities already do their own removal.

According to Demler on some rural roads the carcasses might not be picked up at all.

Some state lawmakers on both sides say they worry what that could do to tourism.

“The perception of our state with dead, decaying carcasses alongside our roads, it might not send the right message,” said Republican State Representative John Nygren of Marinette.

“It doesn’t make for ideal scenery when we have people coming to visit our state,” Democratic State Representative Amanda Stuck of Appleton.

However, some say a cut could be good.

“I don’t know exactly where we’ll end up, we could modify and provide some funding,” said Republican State Representative Michael Schraa of Oshkosh

The DNR agrees with the $700,000 cut, a spokesperson released this statement,”there are adequate DOT and local resources to assure that deer are pulled off the road or removed entirely in a timely fashion.”

But there’s a concern what one more cost could do to hurting local budgets.

“We keep demanding they have to take more responsibility for things while cutting funding to help them do that,” said Stuck

“It’s not going to bankrupt us I don’t think, but the townships, that’ll be another cost the state used to handle and it’ll be put on them,” added Demler.

The most deer collected in any area county last year — 812 in Waupaca County.

Thanksgiving traditions could give way to Packers game

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 8:37pm

GREEN BAY – Combining an honor for Brett Favre with the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field will obviously be a top Packers ticket this year. Playing it on Thanksgiving night adds another dynamic.

Thanksgiving night is usually a quiet one at Stadium View. That won’t be the case this year.

“We’ll more than likely be mobbed from 9 o’clock on, 12, 14 hours because people are going to want to get in and get a seat and stuff like that,” said Jerry Watson, the owner of Stadium View.

Those people will also be taking up typically empty hotel rooms.

“If we’re lucky we get between 10 or 20 rooms for people coming in to visit family,” said Nicole Marchand, general manager of the Holiday Inn in Ashwaubenon.

With news of a Packers home game, there is suddenly much more Thanksgiving interest.

“They’re concerned because they’re coming to town for other reasons for family and they heard the Packers are going to be here, so they are a little nervous, trying to rush to make reservations,” said Marchand.

Other Thanksgiving plans will be more of a game time decision.

“If the sales aren’t as good, my Packers are more important than my sales,” said Stacy Delveaux of Green Bay. “I can always get the sales later.”

FOX 11 talked with a few stores that typically open Thanksgiving night, including Shopko. A spokesperson told us they’ve been planning for the big shopping event since last Thanksgiving. She says they aren’t sure yet how the game might impact those plans.

“It’s a tossup,” said Delveaux. “I will be going shopping, but I also have my phone so I can stream the game on my phone while shopping.”

For others, there is no tossup.

“I started liking the Packers because of Brett Favre and supposedly they may retire his name on that day, so I’m a huge Favre fan before Packers fan, so yeah, that would be pretty special,” said John Luby of Green Bay.

Between the Packers, shopping, food, and deer hunting, there are plenty of things to choose from and be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Darner in spotlight during Phoenix Steak Fry

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 8:20pm

GREEN BAY — The Green Bay athletics department moved their annual Phoenix/Packers Steak Fry to the Lambeau Field Atrium, welcoming what they announced as just shy of 1,000 supporters to raise money for the Phoenix fund. Attendees got to meet the college athletes, current and former Packers players; but the one guy perhaps shaking the most hands was the new coach of Green Bay’s highest profile team.

Linc Darner has only been on the job in Green Bay for about a week, but has been busy. He’s been on the road recruiting, trying to fill this year’s class and get started on next year’s, but came back to town for the fundraising evening.

“I think it a huge nigh,” said Darner, hired to coach the Phoenix after leading Florida Southern College to an NCAA Division-II title this past year. “It puts my face and my assistants face out there so they know who we are and meet as many people as possible. One thing we want is we want this support when we are playing.”

Darner replaces Brian Wardle who left the program to take over at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.

“Since we [had] the press conference on Wednesday at 2pm he has been out and about going crazy recruiting our new players,” said Phoenix director of athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie. “People are really responding to him. He has done a really nice job of getting out there.”

Darner says he has a lot of work to do recruiting-wise. While he can’t commit on the status of the three players who had been committed to play for Brian Wardle at Green Bay, all three are reportedly looking elsewhere to play in college.

Lucroy to miss up to six weeks with toe injury

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 8:20pm

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Brewers All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy could miss four to six weeks with a fractured big left toe.

Lucroy got hurt after during Monday’s 6-1 loss to Cincinnati when a foul tip caromed off his foot. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list immediately after the game.

The injury news only got worse on Tuesday for struggling Milwaukee.

Manager Ron Roenicke said Tuesday starting second baseman Scooter Gennett was placed on the DL after cutting his left hand in the shower after Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh. The move was retroactive to Monday.

The Brewers called up utility man Elian Herrera from Triple-A Colorado Springs to replace Gennett. Minor league reliever Brandon Kintzler was designated for assignment.

Milwaukee had the worst record in the majors at 2-11 going into Tuesday’s game against the Reds.

The offense was struggling even before the injuries to Lucroy and Gennett. Outfielder Carlos Gomez is on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

Tuesday’s patchwork lineup had Herrera playing second base and Jason Rogers playing third to spell the slumping Aramis Ramirez.

“It’s hard, but like I said we weren’t winning and scoring runs when we had everybody,” Roenicke said. “So hopefully some of the different guys I put in there today, those guys are hot.”

Martin Maldonado figures to get the bulk of the starts behind the plate while Lucroy is out. Juan Centeno was called up from Triple-A on Monday night to take Lucroy’s spot.

Cat rescued by fire department in De Pere

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 8:19pm

DE PERE- Nothing is too small or too furry to save for the De Pere City Fire Department.

On Tuesday around 5:00 p.m. the fire department received a call from De Pere resident, Jenifer Boudreau, asking if the fire department rescues cats from trees.

Bourdreau’s cat, Sidney, went missing the previous night and was found that afternoon stuck up in a tree across the street from her home.

Fire crews arrived to the home on N. St. Bernard Street and saw Sidney, about 12 feet high in a tree.

Using an extension ladder, a firefighter was able to bring the cat down safely and back into the arms of its owners.

Steelers-Patriots to open 2015 schedule on a Thursday night

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 8:04pm

NEW YORK — Among the Patriots’ rewards for winning the Super Bowl is hosting the season opener.

This opposition this year is another team with championship pedigree: the Pittsburgh Steelers.

New England and Pittsburgh will begin the NFL season on Thursday night, Sept. 10 with a game matching quarterbacks with six Super Bowl rings and nine Super Bowl appearances: Tom Brady vs. Ben Roethlisberger.

Since Brady became New England’s starting quarterback in 2001, he is 6-3 against the Steelers — he missed the 2008 game while injured — including 2-0 in the playoffs.

Other prime-time matchups on opening weekend will have the New York Giants at Dallas on Sunday, Sept. 13; Philadelphia at Atlanta, followed by Minnesota at San Francisco in a Monday night doubleheader.

Both conference championship rematches will be Sunday night affairs: Seattle at Green Bay in Week 2, Patriots at Colts on Oct. 18.

Yet another Sunday game will be the latest Brady-Peyton Manning faceoff when the Patriots are at Denver on Nov. 29.

Three days earlier, the traditional Thanksgiving Day games will feature Detroit hosting the Eagles, followed by Carolina visiting the Cowboys. The holiday evening contest is a renewal of the NFL’s longest-running rivalry, with Chicago at Green Bay. The Packers reportedly will retire Brett Favre’s jersey that night.

“I think it’s great, and it will be great for our fans, the first time we’ve had a Thanksgiving night game here at Lambeau Field,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “I think it will definitely be a special night.”

The Packers also open the season at Chicago.

“Going to Chicago is always a big game,” McCarthy said. “Doing it Week 1 with a new (Bears) coaching staff brings some extra challenges, but we’re looking forward to starting off with the oldest rivalry in the National Football League.”

Three games in London will have the Jets against the host Dolphins at 9:30 a.m. ET on Oct. 4; Buffalo facing host Jacksonville on Oct. 25; and Detroit against host Kansas City on Nov. 1.

Among the most anticipated games is the first visit to MetLife Stadium by new Bills coach Rex Ryan to face his former club, the Jets. That occurs on Thursday night, Nov. 12.

Packers open season at Bears; host Bears on Thanksgiving

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 7:15pm

The Green Bay Packers’ 2015 schedule — highlighted by the Thanksgiving night game at Lambeau Field against the Chicago Bears, the first home Thanksgiving game since 1923, and four other prime-time contests (subject to flexible scheduling) — was released Thursday.

The Packers will kick off their season on the road for the third consecutive year. Green Bay will travel to Chicago, opening the season at the Bears for the first time since 1981 and on the road against a division opponent for the first time since playing at Detroit in 2005.

“Going to Chicago is always a big game,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “Doing it Week 1 with a new (Bears) coaching staff brings some extra challenges, but we’re looking forward to starting off with the oldest rivalry in the National Football League.”

Green Bay will spend the following two weeks at home, playing a Sunday night game against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 and facing the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football in Week 3. It is the first time since 2008 that the Packers will play their first two home games in primetime.

“With the type of football team we had last year, we expected to come out of the gate and play in a number of feature games,” McCarthy said. “That’s a great start.”

After a trip to take on San Francisco in Week 4, the fifth time the Packers and 49ers will meet in the regular or postseason since 2012, Green Bay returns home for two games before its Week 7 bye. The St. Louis Rams visit Lambeau for the first time since 2011 in Week 5, and in Week 6 the Packers host the San Diego Chargers for the first time since 2007 and only the fifth time overall.

Following Green Bay’s first Week 7 bye since 2007, the Packers travel to play the Broncos in Denver for the first time on a Sunday night. It will be Green Bay’s seventh visit to the Mile High City during the regular season and first since a 19-13 overtime victory in 2007. The Packers stay on the road for a Week 9 game at Carolina, facing the Panthers in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2007-08.

The second half of the regular season will see Green Bay face division opponents in four consecutive weeks. The Packers will face the Lions at home in Week 10, travel to play Minnesota in Week 11, come home to play the Bears on Thanksgiving in Week 12 and play at Detroit in another Thursday night game in Week 13.

“I think it’s great, and it will be great for our fans, the first time we’ve had a Thanksgiving night game here at Lambeau Field,” McCarthy said. “I think it will definitely be a special night.”

It will be the first time Green Bay has played division opponents in four consecutive weeks since 2000 (Weeks 14-17) and the first time the Packers have played on consecutive Thursdays since 2007 (Weeks 12-13).

“That’s a tough stretch going into a short week and coming back on a seven-day week, and they’re both division games, too,” McCarthy said.

The Packers’ final four regular-season games will be bookended by two home contests, starting with Dallas returning to Green Bay in Week 14. Including the postseason, the Packers have won four consecutive games against the Cowboys. In Weeks 15-16, Green Bay travels west to play the Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals. The Packers will host the Vikings at Lambeau to close out the regular season, marking the sixth time the two have met in the regular-season finale and first at Lambeau since 1996.

“November-December football is so important, and it’s so critical to your success,” McCarthy said. “Division games are clearly the most important games of the year and the toughest games to play in. Four straight will definitely be a challenging part of our schedule.”

Green Bay’s schedule includes seven games against 2014 playoff teams. Three of those games (Dallas, Detroit, Seattle) will be at Lambeau Field, while four (Arizona, Carolina, Denver, Detroit) will come on the road.

The dates and times for Green Bay’s preseason games have also been finalized.

Weird: 4 rainbows photographed, but not quadruple rainbow

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 6:23pm

A photo of four rainbows in New York is striking a pot of gold on social media, but an expert in such rare events said this isn’t quite the quadruple miracle that it seems.

“I had a moment of awe, heard my train coming, snapped the photo and ran after my train,” said Amanda Curtis, co-founder of a Brooklyn-based fashion startup called Nineteenth Amendment, who took the photo in Glen Cove on Long Island. “It was very inspiring.”

Many are calling it a quadruple rainbow. But it’s not, said Raymond Lee, a professor of meteorology at the U.S. Naval Academy, who studies and writes about rare rainbows.

First, a quick primer on rainbows. They are created when light is reflected through water droplets. A double rainbow happens when leftover light comes back for a second reflection through the raindrop. With each turn, the rainbow fades a bit.

When light heads through for a third or fourth time – called tertiary and quaternary, not quadruple – that is rare, maybe five have been confirmed in 250 years, Lee said.

But when that occurs, the third and fourth rainbows are on the opposite side of the sky, like book ends, something dictated by complicated physics, Lee said. Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters and University of Georgia physics professor Craig Wiegert confirmed this.

“What happened this morning in New York was quite a different phenomenon,” Masters said in an email. They are reflections off of a water body, when the light bounces off a bay and then heads back through the droplets again, the experts said. These are called reflection rainbows, unusual but not oh-my-God.

“This is a fairly rare photograph,” Lee said. But he adds “not precedent-setting.”

And even though he rained a little on Curtis’ parade, Lee is impressed with her work: “I’m miserable at taking photographs of rainbows.”

Pulaski Community School District clarifies information surrounding recorded fight

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 6:11pm

PULASKI – A week after a video was posted showing an attack in Pulaski High School’s cafeteria, a document related to the incident is going viral.

The Pulaski Community School District confirms the document titled, “inaccurate information verses the facts” was signed by the interim superintendent and Dave Shaw, a physical education teacher at the high school.

The school has also made changes since last month’s incident.

The Pulaski Community School District wants to set the record straight in connection to this incident caught on video.

It happened March 18, before school started. The video went viral after Tim Pine, the father of the teen being punched in the head posted it on Facebook last week.

“No matter what happens here at the Pulaski Community School District we are always focused on the safety of our students,” said Kimberly Uelmen, Pulaski Community School District’s Communications Coordinator.

A district reprimand says Dave Shaw, a physical education teacher, told Ethan Peters the day before the fight, “If I were you, I’d crack him upside the head.”

Peters is the student seen punching Pine’s son in the video.

The district says David Shaw was not in the lunchroom at the time of the incident.

“The comment that the teacher made was on March 17 when the student approached him and then on March 18, in the morning before school in the lunch room, the incident occurred,” Uelmen said.

According to the district, Shaw was required to send a letter of apology to both students and their parents.

Pine says he uploaded the video because he was upset with the way the District was handling the situation.

“But now, since the posting of the video they’re moving and they’re actually doing something and they’re telling us what’s going on,” said Pine.

Seventeen-year-old Peters is facing battery and disorderly conduct charges.

The criminal complaint says Peters hit Pine’s son because he wouldn’t stop making whistling noises in the commons.

“There were two supervisors but they were close to the hallway, so they could not get to the actual fight in time. They had to run across the room,” Uelmen said.

Tiffany Sasse and some other members of the community say Shaw does not deserve the negative attention.

“Dave is not a malicious person. He’s not a mean person. He’s the exact opposite. I think Pulaski, as a community, has maybe gotten a bad reputation from this and that is completely not the case, this is an amazing community,” Sasse said.

The district says since the incident, adult supervision has increased with teacher walking the halls and the lunchroom.

FOX 11 made multiple attempts to hear from Dave Shaw. He did not respond to our e-mails or messages.

Packers have had success with second-round wide receivers

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 5:11pm

When the Green Bay Packers are on the clock with the 30th pick of the NFL Draft it would not surprise most people if they decide to trade down. The Packers like to have second-round draft picks and they like to choose wide receivers with those picks.

GM Ted Thompson has had success in the second round, drafting some of the key pass catchers for Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers since 2005.

It all started in 2005, as Thompson spent the Packers second of their two second-round picks on Terrence Murphy. While Murphy’s career did not pan out due to injury, it started a trend Thompson has followed five times in his 10 drafts with the organization. The next year the Packers took Greg Jennings, who spent seven seasons with Green Bay, and was a two-time Pro Bowler.

Jennings left the Packers in 2013 to join the Minnesota Vikings but the Packers top three wide receivers from last season are all second-round gems Thompson found through the draft. Jordy Nelson was drafted in 2008, Randall Cobb in 2011 and last season Davante Adams joined the fold.

The Packers could decide they have enough with Nelson, Cobb, and Adams, plus their draft picks from last season. They drafted Wisconsin standout Jared Abbrederis in the fifth round and Jeff Janis in the seventh. Both had what you could call red-shirt years with Abbrederis spending the entire season on the injured reserve with a torn ACL and Janis finding himself inactive on most gamedays.

Abbrederis could find himself spending time on special teams, as he returned both kicks and punts in college. Janis showed his potential and speed in the preseason, catching two touchdowns passes against Kansas City and St. Louis.

If the Packers decide to use a 2nd-round pick on a wide receiver, here are a few names that could be available:

Devin Smith – Ohio State
Nelson Agholor – USC
Sammie Coates – Auburn
Devin Funchess – Michigan
Rashad Greene – Florida State

If they add another weapon for Rodgers it wouldn’t be a surprise, but in a Thompson draft you never know what you are going to get.

Rare tick virus in Wisconsin

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 4:51pm

ASHWAUBENON – As the temperatures rise, more people will be heading outdoors.

It also means more bugs.

And with the insects, comes concerns about things like Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus.

But there’s another rare virus that may not be so familiar.

Spring is starting to show a little color at Sherwood Forest Park in Ashwaubenon.

But that also means ticks are thawing out as well.

Doctors say a rare disease called the Powassan Virus is related to the West Nile Virus, and a bite from a deer tick can cause health problems.

“They almost mimic symptoms like somebody who just had meningitis, like a viral meningitis. Where they get a bad stiff neck, headache and confusion. Worst-case scenario, there’s any swelling of the brain, and then you start having seizures and things of that nature,” said Dr. Paul Pritchard, Prevea Health Chief Quality Officer.

A look at the facts reveals the disease is very uncommon. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reports only 16 confirmed cases in a 10-year period for the entire state.

That compares to 3,500 reported cases of Lyme Disease each year.

Scientists say the deer tick bite is different too.

“With Lyme Disease they need to attach for 24-48 hours before they will transmit the virus. We don’t know how long they need to be attached to transmit the Powassan Virus,” said Linda Williams, DNR Forest Health Specialist.

Doctors say there is no cure for the virus, and treatment is geared toward making the patient comfortable.

“You get I-V fluids, you get medication to try to prevent swelling if swelling was occurring on the brain. Thinks of that nature. But it’s not like you can get an anti-viral medication and that would wipe the disease out,” said Pritchard.

Doctors offer some advice. People should tuck their pants inside their socks, and wear light colored clothing. And using insect repellant is also a good idea.

Because the virus is so rare, hospitals don’t do testing on the local level.

Any suspected cases are sent to the State Department of Health Services in Madison.
