Judge orders evaluations of Slender Man stabbing suspects

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 12:50pm

WAUKESHA (AP) – A judge has decided that two girls accused in the stabbing of a classmate to please the horror character Slender Man should be evaluated by the Waukesha County’s Department of Health and Human Services.

The judge made the decision Tuesday after the girls’ attorneys asked for the department to evaluate and determine services as if the girls were in juvenile court.

Morgan Geyser, 12, and Anissa Weier, 13, from Waukesha, are charged as adults with attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the attack on a classmate, who survived 19 stab wounds last May.

The girls have separate hearings this month and next month to determine if their cases should be moved to juvenile court.

Attorney Tony Cotton said he will determine if any additional motions need to be made after seeing the report.

Panel approves Walker’s drunken driving spending change

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 12:49pm

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The Legislature’s budget-writing committee has approved cutting $731,000 in grant funding to treat drunken drivers as Gov. Scott Walker proposed.

The Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee on Tuesday rejected Democrats’ attempts to keep the funding in place. Instead, the panel went along with Walker’s plan that would have money for the program come out of $8.7 million that already goes to other mental health and substance abuse community services.

Democrats argue the drunken driving intervention program is successful and should not be put in jeopardy. The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau says the program saved taxpayers $1.2 million in jail costs in Waukesha County alone.

Republicans say they also support the program, and if it can’t be adequately funded the Department of Health Services can come back and ask for more money.

Memorials for shooting victims gather at park

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 11:51am

TOWN OF MENASHA – Work to prepare Fritse Park and the Trestle Trail for reopening continues two days after four people were killed in a shooting.

Town of Menasha parks officials say there is still some cleaning work to be done before the park and trail can reopen. They hope to reopen both sometime Wednesday.

There is a small area of Fritse Park open for people to leave flowers and other memorials to the victims.

Jon Stoffel, his daughter Olivia, of Neenah; and Adam Bentdahl of Appleton were killed Sunday night. Erin Stoffel, Jon’s wife and Olivia’s mother, was injured in the attack and remains hospitalized. Her condition was upgraded from critical to serious on Tuesday.

Police say the gunman, Sergio Daniel Valencia Del Toro, was upset over his recently ended engagement and shot the victims randomly on the trail.

FOX 11’s Eric Peterson will have more on the community’s reaction to the tragedy tonight on FOX 11 News at Five.

Ex-nurse on trial, accused of trying to kill woman

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 11:11am

PORTAGE (AP) – A former nurse accused of trying to kill the wife of a man with whom prosecutors say she’d had an affair is on trial in Columbia County Circuit Court.

Stephanie McMillen is charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and stalking. Kimberly Tennier testified McMillen showed up at her house in September 2012 and asked for help finding a lost cat. McMillen was disguised in wig, bandanna and sunglasses.

A criminal complaint says McMillen tried to lure Tennier to a pond in a wooded area behind the house. Prosecutors say Tennier became suspicious, went back to the house, locked the door and called her husband.

The Portage Daily Register reports investigators believe McMillen intended to kill Tennier with morphine she had taken from her place of employment. Defense attorney Jay Englund says McMillen never crossed the line to attempted homicide.

Walker’s UW autonomy proposal dead in Legislature, cuts debated

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 10:59am

MADISON (AP) – Co-chairs of the Legislature’s budget committee say an agreement has been reached in the Senate and Assembly not to move forward with Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal to give the University of Wisconsin more independence from state law and oversight.

The lawmakers declared the proposal dead on Tuesday. Lawmakers for weeks have been saying it was unlikely to pass.

Sen. Alberta Darling and Rep. John Nygren also reiterated their support for lowering the $300 million budget cut Walker proposed to go along with giving UW more independence. But Darling and Nygren aren’t saying yet how much that may be reduced.

Lawmakers are waiting for new estimates on tax collections due any day that will determine how much additional money is available to be spent.

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 10:53am

MADISON (AP) – Gov. Scott Walker is slated to speak at the Wisconsin Republican Party convention later this month, while Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine will keynote the state Democratic Party meeting next month.

Walker is among a long list of speakers scheduled to talk Saturday May 16 at the Republican convention in La Crosse. Others slated to speak include Attorney General Brad Schimel, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan.

Walker, a likely presidential candidate, is scheduled to be in Iowa the night of May 16.

Kaine is scheduled to talk June 5 at the Democratic convention in Milwaukee. Democrats will also be electing a new state party chairman at its convention that weekend.

Huckabee, the other man from Hope, opens 2016 bid

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 10:51am

HOPE, Ark. (AP) – The other man from Hope is running for president again.

Declaring Tuesday that he can bring “the kind of change that truly can get America from hope to higher ground,” former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee declared his Republican candidacy in the hometown he shares with former President Bill Clinton.

Roots in Hope are about all he shares with the Democrat, and in his nascent campaign, he’s pitching himself as the best Republican to take on Bill’s wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, the dominant Democrat in the 2016 race.

“It would be perfectly fitting that I would announce here that I am a candidate for president of the United States of America,” Huckabee told hundreds of supporters.

An anti-Clinton message is one peg in Huckabee’s effort to expand his support beyond social conservatives who helped him win eight states in the 2008 Republican nominating contest, which eventually went to John McCain. He was the third notable Republican to announce a presidential campaign this week, bringing the field to six, with more to come.

Huckabee argued that in his more than 10 years as governor, he took on Democrats in “Bill Clinton’s Arkansas” after candidate Bill Clinton won election to the White House in 1992. Huckabee was elected lieutenant governor, his first public office, months after Clinton left the governor’s mansion for Washington.

“I governed in a state that was the most lopsided and partisan in the country,” he told supporters. “No Republican governor had more Democrats and fewer Republicans. I challenged the deeply entrenched political machine that ran this state. It was tough sledding, but I learned how to govern and how to lead.”

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who in 1998 was one of the House prosecutors in the impeachment proceedings against Bill Clinton, joined others in introducing Huckabee.

Besides the anti-Clinton emphasis, Huckabee sees himself as an economic populist and foreign affairs hawk who still holds deeply conservative views on social issues such as abortion and gay marriage.

Huckabee advocates a national consumption tax, which is similar to a sales tax, to replace the existing federal taxes on personal income and payrolls. He rejects calls for a minimum wage increase, saying his proposals will yield a “maximum wage” for workers.

A governor from 1996 to 2007, Huckabee compiled a mixed record ideologically. He both cut and raised taxes, drawing the ire of some national groups like the Club for Growth. He pleased conservatives with a late-term abortion ban but raised eyebrows by issuing more criminal pardons and sentence commutations than his three predecessors combined.

Huckabee, an author and former Fox News host, hopes to appeal to everyday Americans who “don’t feel like anybody understands or knows who they are, much less cares what’s happening to them.”

As he put it Tuesday: “Power, money and political influence have left a lot of Americans behind.”

Huckabee’s potential strength among the growing number of Republican candidates rests with cultural conservatives who wield strong influence in the party’s nominating process.

Evangelical Christian voters helped Huckabee win the Iowa caucuses in 2008 and finish a strong second in South Carolina, the largest of the early-voting states. Huckabee would need to replicate that early success to create an opening to build a wider coalition and compete deep into the primary schedule.

Coast Guard completes Great Lakes ice breaking

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 10:19am

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) – Efforts to break up ice on the Great Lakes have wrapped up after more than four months.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release that its crews and Canadian counterparts finished ice breaking operations Monday. Crews worked to help keep shipping vessels moving on the Great Lakes as well as the St. Marys River, Detroit River and Straits of Mackinac.

Operations included clearing two significant plugs in the St. Clair River, easing high water levels that were nearing the flood stage.

The Coast Guard says crews also helped break free the motor vessel Arthur M. Anderson from the ice near Conneaut Harbor, Ohio, in February.

FOX renews ‘The Simpsons’ for 2 more seasons

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 10:10am

LOS ANGELES (AP) – “The Simpsons” will keep the satire coming for at least two more seasons.

FOX said Monday it has renewed the animated series for its 27th and 28th seasons, which will carry it to a total of 625 episodes.

The tale of Springfield and the Simpson family is TV’s longest-running scripted nighttime series.

“The Simpsons” cast includes Dan Castellaneta as dad Homer – with his trademark “d’oh!” – and Julie Kavner as mom Marge.

The network’s announcement included a boast from Homer that his doughnut addiction helped him outlast David Letterman, Jon Stewart and Dr. McDreamy from “Grey’s Anatomy.”

The award-winning comedy has proved a money machine, spawning merchandise, a big-screen movie, video games and a Universal Studios Ride.

Roggensack says she doesn’t want to fight with justices

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 9:55am

MADISON (AP) – Newly elected Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Patience Roggensack says she doesn’t want to pick a fight with other justices, even though her selection as its leader is contested.

Roggensack spoke Tuesday on WTMJ Radio about her election last week as chief by four of the seven members of the court. Longtime Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson contends she remains the chief justice and is fighting over the issue in federal court.

Roggensack says “there’s no doubt about it” that she’s chief justice, saying she is meeting with court staff.

Roggensack says she is keeping her same court office and is “not interested in making this transition any more difficult for Justice Abrahamson.” Roggensack says, “I have no interest in picking a fight with any of my colleagues.”

Wisconsin Supreme Court reinstates conviction

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 9:53am

MADISON (AP) – The Wisconsin Supreme Court has overturned a lower court ruling and reinstated a fourth drunken driving conviction against a Madison area man.

Dean Blatterman, of the Madison suburb Oregon, argued that his blood alcohol level test results should not be admitted because Dane County sheriff’s deputies transported him to a hospital 10 miles away from where he was pulled over.

A state appeals court determined that taking Blatterman so far away from the scene amounted to a “de facto” arrest and violated his Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable search and seizure.

But the Supreme Court said Tuesday that officers had a reasonable suspicion to stop Blatterman based on statements his wife made about his condition. The court also ruled that taking him to the hospital was within their legal authority.

Wisconsin lawmakers tell committee to repeal prevailing wage

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 9:52am

MADISON (AP) – Two Republican legislators are trying to convince the state Senate’s labor committee to approve a bill that would repeal Wisconsin’s prevailing wage law.

The bill’s chief sponsors, Sen. Leah Vukmir and Rep. Rob Hutton, told the committee during a hearing Tuesday that the law artificially increases costs for local governments. They say repealing the law would save taxpayer dollars.

Sen. Robert Wirch, a Pleasant Prairie Democrat, countered that the law helps ensure quality work.

The bill’s fate looks uncertain. It appears the labor committee’s chairman, Sen. Stephen Nass, doesn’t have the votes to approve the bill after Sen. Howard Marklein said he believes the law should be reformed rather than repealed. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has said he doesn’t have the votes to pass the bill out of that house.

Plea agreement made in fatal dump truck crash

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 9:50am

LA CROSSE (AP) – A dump truck driver who had alcohol in his system and admitted checking Facebook before a fatal interstate crash has been convicted of homicide in La Crosse County Circuit Court.

Thirty-six-year-old Francis Rychtik Sr., has pleaded no contest to charges, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, in an agreement with prosecutors. The Arpin man was hauling sand for B&R Excavating last July when he hit the back of a Mustang convertible on Interstate 90, setting off a chain reaction crash involving three other vehicles and a semi.

The dump truck landed on top of the convertible and both vehicles caught fire. The 29-year-old driver of the Mustang, Jason Songer of La Crescent, Minnesota, was killed. Four others were injured. The La Crosse Tribune says sentencing is scheduled July 21.

Mother’s Day in Sturgeon Bay: Cornucopia Kitchen Shop

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 8:47am

STURGEON BAY – Shopping for mom is easy in Sturgeon Bay if she loves all things related to cooking and entertaining.  We stopped by Cornucopia, a kitchen shop on Third Avenue.  Owners Carrie Hauser and Kim Herlache showed us around.  Hauser says the shop’s tag line is “everything for the kitchen” and she believes they have that covered.  Herlache says one of their newer items are the pillows by MFH which can be personalized with a family name.  She also pointed out the custom made dish towels for Door County, the Great Lakes, and all 50 states.  Herlache also loves the new porcelain travel mugs that can be put in the dishwasher or microwave.  If mom likes to collect Polish Pottery, they have a big selection.

Tue, 05/05/2015 - 8:36am

GREEN BAY –  If you are looking to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with some authentic Mexican food, you might want to head to Antojitos Mexicanos in Appleton.  The Mexican restaurant recently moved to it’s new location at 204 E. College Avenue in downtown Appleton.  Or you can make your own meal with these ideas from owners Fernando Almanza and Veronica Vanda. They cooked for us on Good Day Wisconsin, making dishes that are popular in their hometown in Mexico.

Almanza describes the Enchiladas Bajio as a tortilla fried in salsa de Chile Guajillo, stuffed with cheese and onions and then topped with red salsa, arugula, fried potatoes with Chorizo and queso fresco. They also made Gorditas, similar to a pita bread but made with corn. Its cooked with Mozzarella cheese mix with salsa. Stuffed with fried pork in red salsa.
