American Pharoah: First triple crown in 37 years
NEW YORK (AP) – By mid-stretch, Bob Baffert knew it. American Pharoah was going to win the Triple Crown.
He took his eyes off the horse to soak in the crazed scene of the packed grandstand. Fans jumped up and down, hugged, and tossed drinks in the air.
The race wasn’t even over yet, and the crowd knew it, too. Thirty-seven years of waiting to see one of the rarest feats in sports was almost over.
“The crowd was just thundering and I was just enjoying the crowd and the noise and everything happening,” the white-haired trainer said. “What a feeling.”
Finally, a Triple Crown winner. And this one was never in doubt.
American Pharoah led all the way to win the Belmont Stakes by 5 ½ lengths on Saturday, becoming the first horse since 1978 to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes – one of the sporting world’s rarest feats.
“Wow! Wow!” jockey Victor Espinoza said moments after crossing the finish line. “I can only tell you it is just an amazing thing.”
The bay colt with the unusually short tail easily defeated seven rivals in the grueling 1 1/2-mile race, covering the distance in 2:26.65 – sixth-fastest in Belmont history – to end the longest stretch without a Triple Crown champion in history.
“That little horse, he deserved it,” said Baffert, who at 62 is the second-oldest trainer of a Triple Crown winner. “He’s the one that did it. We were basically just passengers.”
American Pharoah is the 12th horse and first since Affirmed in 1978 to win three races on different tracks at varying distances over a five-week span. He won the Derby by one length on May 2 and then romped to a seven-length victory in the rainy Preakness two weeks later before demolishing his rivals Saturday.
Baffert and Espinoza ended their own frustrating histories in the Triple Crown. Baffert finally won on his record fourth Triple try, having lost in 1997, 1998 (by a nose) and in 2002. Espinoza got it done with his record third shot after failing to win in 2002 and last year on California Chrome.
“I was prepared for somebody coming because I’ve been through this so many times,” Baffert said.
Nobody did.
Espinoza hustled American Pharoah to the lead leaving the No. 5 post and quickly got him over to the rail. Materiality was on his outside in second, but never applied any serious pressure traveling along the backstretch before falling away on the second turn.
American Pharoah started kicking away heading into the final turn. He opened up on the field as he powered through the 1,097-yard stretch, displaying his fluid, springloaded stride in which he appears to float over the ground.
“It’s just an amazing feeling that you have when you’re 20 yards from the wire,” Espinoza said. “And then at the wire I was like, ‘I cannot believe I did it.'”
American Pharoah ran the final quarter-mile – a stretch that has dashed numerous Triple Crown dreams – in 24.32 seconds, faster than Secretariat’s time of 25 seconds in winning the 1973 Belmont.
“That’s a hell of a horse,” said Gary Stevens, who finished seventh aboard Tale of Verve. “The race was over in the third jump from the gate.”
After making his way back to the crowd, Espinoza took American Pharoah nearly the length of the sprawling grandstand so fans could pay their respects to the champion.
As the horses were heading to the starting gate, owner Ahmed Zayat was overflowing with confidence and turned to his wife.
“I told her, ‘Get ready to be the owner of the 12th Triple Crown winner,'” he said.
Baffert felt equally good, sensing American Pharoah was on the verge of a winning performance when he saddled the horse in the shady paddock.
“I said to put him on the lead and go for it, and if he doesn’t make it, don’t worry about it,” the trainer said, “but he just kept on rocking and rolling.”
Sent off as the overwhelming 3-5 favorite, American Pharoah paid $3.50, $2.80 and $2.50.
Frosted returned $3.50 and $2.90, while Keen Ice was another two lengths back in third and paid $4.60 to show.
Mubtaahij was fourth, followed by Frammento, Madefromlucky, Tale of Verve and Materiality.
American Pharoah delivered a victory for the Egyptian-born Zayat, who bred the colt and put him up for sale before buying him back for $300,000. His name came from the family’s online contest, in which a woman from Missouri submitted the winning moniker, but the misspelling – it should be pharaoh – wasn’t noticed until the name was already official.
American Pharoah joined the exclusive club of Triple Crown winners Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977) and Affirmed.
A sign with American Pharoah’s name and silks was quickly put up in the infield next to the 11 other Triple Crown winners.
The crowd of 90,000 – capped to avoid overcrowding and long lines from last year’s total of 102,199 – roared as American Pharoah turned for home.
It’s unlikely the champion heard them since American Pharoah wears ear plugs to block noise that might get him worked up.
Since 1978, the rigors of the Triple Crown had done in 13 other horses who won the Derby and the Preakness – with 12 losing the third leg and I’ll Have Another scratched with a leg injury in 2012. Their failures left the sport and its fans craving a worthy successor to the 11 previous champions.
American Pharoah – his tail shortened after being bitten off on a farm when he was a youngster – turned out to be that horse.
“I was really getting to dislike this trophy – it’s come with a lot of misery,” Baffert said of the sterling silver Triple Crown trophy housed for the last 37 years in the Kentucky Derby museum.
“But it’s owed to the fans of New York that kept paying their money, showing up, hoping. They finally got it.”
Unlike Affirmed, who dueled Alydar in all three races, American Pharoah didn’t have a specific rival since he was the only horse to run in all three Triple Crown races. Going into the Belmont, American Pharoah had beaten all of his seven challengers before.
And when the race known as “The Test of the Champion” came?
He passed, with flying colors.

Local athletes get multiple golds at WIAA State Track
La Crosse (WI) – With 2800 athletes competing at the WIAA State Track and Field meet in La Crosse, Wisconsin this weekend, not everyone will get a medal. But some of our local athletes excelled, and won more than one.
Bay Port had two multiple winners, which led to a state title. Zach Lorbeck won both the high jump and the long jump, while Cole Van Lanen took the shot put and discus titles.
In division two, Little Chute’s Scott Hietpas also won two golds, in the triple jump and the long jump. “It was a great weekend, and I’ve been able to jump my best,” said Hietpas. “It’s worth every second of my high school career and a great way to go out as a Mustang.”
Collin Hofacker from Freedom also got greedy with the medals. He garnered three, winning the 200, the 400 and the 4 x 400 relay to stand atop the podium on multiple occasions.

Gomez has 4 hits and 3 RBIs as Brewers beat Twins again, 4-2
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The first two months of the season were a struggle for Matt Garza and the Milwaukee Brewers. Carlos Gomez was hurt a couple of times and had a quiet start, too.
Maybe facing their former team, the Minnesota Twins, brought out their best. More likely, success resulted from refocusing on their aggressive styles.
Gomez went 4 for 4 with a walk and drove in three runs during the last three innings, and Garza pitched seven strong innings to help the Brewers beat the Twins 4-2 on Saturday.
“We’re trying to get Carlos to just let his talent come out,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said.
That it did. Gomez hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the seventh and an RBI double in the ninth for his first four-hit game in more than a year. That more than made up for being thrown out twice trying to retreat to second base.
“That’s how he plays the game. It’s all out. There’s going to be some mistakes that are made on occasion, but he’s so much fun to watch,” said teammate Ryan Braun, who homered in the first inning after missing the previous two games because of his troublesome right thumb.
Garza (4-7) handed the Twins their second straight loss at home for the first time this year in front of the second-largest crowd at Target Field this season.
Gomez is batting .369 with 19 RBIs in 24 career games against the Twins, his team in 2008 and 2009. Garza, the first-round draft pick by the Twins in 2005, has a 1.66 ERA in four career starts against them.
“It’s nothing personal,” Gomez said, smiling. “They have bad luck, because every time I come here I’m really locked in.”
Garza retired his first 11 batters before Joe Mauer beat out an infield single. Mauer drove in Brian Dozier with a single in the sixth, but Garza escaped a bases-loaded, none-out situation in the fifth and stranded Eddie Rosario at third after a leadoff double in the seventh. Garza allowed six hits while striking out three with no walks.
He realized recently how to get back on track.
“I got away from me and the way I like to pitch, and it was getting harder and harder to not only look at myself but to sleep at night,” Garza said. “You can’t do this game without having fun.”
Twins rookie J.R. Graham made his first major league start, lasting 63 pitches and four innings.
Francisco Rodriguez pitched a hitless ninth for his 10th save in 10 tries after Dozier hit his 11th homer for the Twins off Jonathan Broxton in the eighth.
Ryan Pressly (3-2) prevented any damage despite throwing 12 straight balls to start the fifth, but he gave up a leadoff single to Jean Segura in the seventh. Gomez smacked the first pitch from Blaine Boyer, the third reliever of the inning, into center field to put the Brewers up 3-1.
“He’s so aggressive that you think you might have a chance to wiggle your way out of a jam,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said.
Not this time.
“Obviously, I don’t want him to do it against our team too often, but he’s fun to watch play,” Minnesota’s Trevor Plouffe said.
Gomez is hitting .357 over his last nine games.
“It gets us going, just the energy he puts out and him being him,” Garza said. “It’s exciting.”
TRYING TO GET ON
Segura was given first base on a hit by pitch in the fourth, shaking his hand as if it was hurt, but the ruling was overturned on a challenge by Molitor when replays showed the ball hit Segura’s bat.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Brewers: Braun’s absence from the lineup Friday was precautionary. “I want him the closest to 100 percent we can get him. If it costs us a couple of games over the long term, that’s the best way,” Counsell said.
Twins: RHP Ricky Nolasco had a cortisone shot in his right ankle to relieve discomfort from a bone fragment, but the effect of the injection won’t be clear until he begins throwing next week.
UP NEXT
Mike Fiers (2-5, 4.06 ERA) will pitch for the Brewers in the series finale Sunday against Mike Pelfrey (4-2, 2.59). Fiers is coming off his best start this season, six scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory at St. Louis with six strikeouts. Pelfrey has allowed three runs over his last three starts, spanning 20 innings.
‘Hackathon” aimed at making Appleton a better place to live
APPLETON – A group of hackers gathered to do some good for the Appleton community Saturday.
This was Appleton’s first civic “Hackathon.”
It’s an event designed for people to work with publicly available data to make the city a better place to live.
The gathering was made up of computer programmers, coders and others who just wanted to share in the fun.
The group in Appleton joined thousands of others across the country. All were participating in the National Day of Civic Hacking.
They used public information to build new tools and provide new information to the community.
“The ‘Hackathon’ is really about building things for the community as opposed to the malicious hacking that takes things away. This is bringing people together to build up new tools and aggregate some data and provide information to people in the community,” said Kevin Wirth with Skyline Technologies.
Officials say the event showcased the city’s tech talent while making a difference.
Appleton Skate Park hosts grand opening
APPLETON – Athletes and spectators were in the Fox Valley Saturday for the official grand opening of the Appleton Skate Park.
The 7,000 square foot park opened to skaters in November, but this weekend marked the official grand opening.
The event had demonstrations, prizes, games and a grip-tape design station. There were even professional skaters on hand to show off their skills.
Organizers say the park is important for kids to get outside and be active.
“We need a place for so many people, who are not in team sports, to have a place to ride, to be safe, build friendships and to get ouside and to be healthy and to exercise and do what they love to do. So we’re very, very happy,” said Keevie Bremhorst, Friends of Appleton Skate Park president.
The new skate park is located in Telulah Park on East Newberry Street.
Boys and Girls Club of Menasha celebrates grand opening
MENASHA – The Boys and Girls Club of Menasha celebrated its grand opening Saturday.
The event included a ribbon cutting ceremony and tours of the facility.
The new club features a stem and robotics lab, dance studio, cafeteria and gymnasium.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley work with more than 12,000 young people each year.
Club officials say a place like this will give kids in the community a place to learn and grow.
“This Boys and Girls Club is certainly a 21st century Boys and Girls Club. It’s got the technology that you’d expect out of a modern facility and the kinds of program spaces that kids these days really need to be able to access so that they can learn, grow and develop,” said CEO Greg Lemke-Rochon.
The club will officially open for summer programming this Monday.

Wisconsin Democrats to elect new party leader in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (AP) – Wisconsin Democrats could soon have a new party leader.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports candidates for Democratic Party of Wisconsin chairperson were to address the state convention in Milwaukee on Saturday.
The party’s current chairman, Mike Tate, isn’t seeking another term.
The candidates include businesswoman and community activist Martha Laning of Sheboygan, Democratic National Committeeman Jason Rae of Milwaukee, former state lawmaker Stephen Smith of Shell Lake and former Democratic party chairman Joe Wineke of Verona.
Reeling from a string of high-profile ballot defeats, Democrats hope for a fresh start with a new chairperson, who plays a key fundraising role for the party and serves as its public face.
Wright house rediscovered in Milwaukee suburb
MILWAUKEE (AP) – A Frank Lloyd Wright house has been re-discovered after being hidden in plain sight for years in a Milwaukee suburb.
The Shorewood house was part of Wright’s effort to design, develop and market well-designed houses for low-to-moderate-income families around 1915. They are called American System-Built Houses and there are others throughout the Midwest, including six in Milwaukee.
Mike Lilek, a curator at Frank Lloyd Wright Wisconsin, says when he first got a tip about the house a few years ago he brushed it off. But when he visited, he discovered many Wright characteristics and through research confirmed it.
Wright likely didn’t know about the house.
Lilek says the house’s developer had not given Wright a full record of all the houses he built with the architect’s drawings.
Baldwin blasts Walker at Wisconsin Democratic convention
MILWAUKEE (AP) – Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin says Republican Gov. Scott Walker has compromised the life of Wisconsin residents to advance his own ambitions.
Baldwin blasted Walker on Friday night at the Wisconsin Democratic Party convention. Baldwin said Walker has proposed devastating cuts in his budget and has restricted unions and women’s rights in the state.
Baldwin listed items that she said Wisconsin had valued before Walker was elected. Among them were the state’s natural resources, workers’ rights and abortion rights. Attendees loudly booed as she talked about Walker and his likely presidential campaign.
A Walker spokeswoman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Friday night.
Police: 3-year-old bitten 11 times in fatal beating
MILWAUKEE (AP) – A 27-year-old man is accused of abusing a 3-year-old autistic boy who was found with at least 11 bite marks, multiple bruises and brain swelling.
Maurice Snyder is charged with 13 counts of physical abuse of a child and one count of child neglect. The boy’s mother 24-year-old Megan Scott is charged with failure to act to prevent bodily harm to a child.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Aiden Archer died Wednesday, after being on life support since Monday when police were called to the house.
The complaint says Snyder and Scott are heroin addicts.
Prosecutors expect to file an amended charge of first-degree intentional homicide against Snyder once the cause of death is confirmed.
Neither suspect had an attorney listed in online court records. Both were jailed Saturday.

Crab & Sausage Jambalaya Roll with Spicy Japanese Creole Sauce
Make 4 Rolls
INGREDIENTS QUANTITY PROCEDURE
Jambalaya Roll
Andouille Sausage About 2 links Cut into ½ inch by ½ inch square
Imitation Crab Meat 4 logs Cut to fit the nori sheet
Red Bell Pepper About ½ pepper Sliced thin
Celery About 1 stalk Sliced thin
Garlic Olive Oil ¼ cup Ass need for sauté
Garlic About 1 teaspoons Garlic in the jar. Reserve I teaspoon of juice
Red Onion About ½ cup Sliced thin
Roma Tomato 1 medium firm Guts removed and sliced thinly
Louisiana Hot Sauce As needed To taste
Nori (seaweed) 4 sheets
Cooked Sushi Rice 3 cup Short or medium but short holds better
Slap Yo’ Mama Creole Spice 2 to 3 tsp. To taste
Black Sesame Seeds About 2 Tbsp. Or regular sesame seeds
Pickled Ginger 2 Tbsp. Enough for a little on each plate
Wasabi Sauce 2 Tbsp. Enough for a little on each plate
Japanese Creole Sauce
Real Mayo ½ cup
Louisiana Hot Sauce 3 Tbsp. To taste find the hottest one
Key Lime Juice 1 tsp. Or fresh lime
Garlic Juice 1 tsp. optional
Directions for the Jambalaya Roll
1. Follow the direction for the sushi rice. For best results cook in a rice cooker. When the rice is on you can prep up everything else you need for the rolls.
2. Using a small skillet add a little oil and allow to get hot on a medium-high heat. Place each sausage in the hot oil and allow a nice dark sear on each side. This should take about 1 minute on all 4 sides. When you are about 1 minute done add in the garlic. Dash some of the Louisiana hot sauce over the sausages to coat them. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
3. Clean the pan out of any burnt pieces and add a little more oil and allow to get hot on a medium-high heat. Add the sliced red bell pepper and the sliced celery. Season with creole seasoning and suttee lightly for about 1 minute. Set aside with the sausages.
4. Cover a bamboo mat with plastic wrap tightly. Place a sheet of nori on top centered. With water-moistened hands, spread 1 cup of the cooked rice evenly on top of the seaweed leaving about a quarter inch border at the top and bottom edges. Press firmly. Leaving the plastic wrap in place on the mat, turn the sushi layer over so that the seaweed faces up and the rice faces down.
5. Arrange one sausage strip, one crab log, and about 4 strips of peppers, celery, onion and tomato on top of the seaweed so the ingredients form a neat narrow row that aligns with the edge of the nori square closest to you. Roll the bamboo mat forward (making sure the plastic wrap stays with the mat), pressing the ingredients inside the cylinder-shaped sushi. Press the bamboo mat firmly with both hands to shape the sushi, then remove the mat. Repeat the process with remaining ingredients to make three more rolls.
6. Cut the sushi rolls into 1 inch rounds with a sharp serrated knife moistened with water and whipped each cut. Serve with wasabi, ginger, and Japanese Creole Sauce.
Directions for the Japanese Creole Sauce
1. In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, Jerk Marinade Sriracha, and lime juice. Taste and add more Sriracha to desired spiciness. Serve immediately or transfer to an airtight container and store in refrigerator for up to a month.

Instructions
How to Cook Perfect Sushi Rice (Rice Maker and Stove-top versions): P.S. do not add salt while cooking rice.
1. Wash the rice with cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well. If you have a rice maker (way easier!), follow rice maker instructions and cook on the white rice setting then skip to step #4
2. Put drained rice in a heavy sauce-pan and add 2 cups cold water. Cover tightly and set the pan over high heat and bring to a boil. Once it boils, reduce heat to medium and let cook covered until all the water is absorbed (7-8 min). Do not remove the cover to check, but listen for the bubbling to stop.
3. Once you hear a faint hissing sound, reduce the heat to very low and cook another 6 min. Remove from the heat and let stand 15 min covered. This is the basic white rice eaten with japanese meals.
4. Transfer the hot rice to a large bowl and break it up to get rid of all the hot clumps.
5. Let the rice cool down until it is just warm, then stir in your cooled sushi vinegar
Assembling your California Rolls:
1. Wrap your sushi matt in plastic wrap before using it (this makes it re-useable and you don’t even have to wash it!).
2. Fold the pieces of nori in half to split them.
3. Toast your sesame seeds over medium heat, stirring constantly until golden. Slice up your veggies.
4. Spread a generous handful of sushi rice onto the ½ sheet of nori. Use your WET FINGER TIPS (keep your hands wet to prevent sticking) to spread the rice evenly over the entire surface of the nori.
5. Flip the rice covered piece of nori over so the rice is facing down (this way, your rice will be on the outside). Place your fillings across the center of your rice in the middle of the sheet (don’t overfill or the roll won’t seal).
6. Start rolling away from you using your matt to firmly keep the roll in place. Apply some pressure to make a tight roll. If its not tight enough, it will be difficult to cut. Once the roll is complete, sprinkle the roll with toasted sesame seeds while it is still on the mat so you can turn it easily.
7. Run your sharp knife through a damp paper towel before slicing so the rice won’t stick as much. Cut the roll in half, then line the two halves up and slice even 1-inch rings. I have found that it slices easier when you slice quickly.

Obamas, Clintons to join Joe Biden at funeral for son Beau
WASHINGTON (AP) – Vice President Joe Biden will mourn his eldest son at the funeral for former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, whose death to brain cancer one week ago triggered an outpouring of grief in Delaware and beyond.
President Barack Obama, accompanied by his family, was to deliver a eulogy during the full Catholic Mass honoring Beau Biden in Wilmington, Delaware, where political luminaries like Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton were also gathering to pay their respects. Biden’s two surviving children – Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden – were also to eulogize their brother, as was Gen. Ray Odierno, the former top U.S. commander in Iraq, where Beau Biden was once deployed.
St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church typically seats less than 1,000 people, but portable seats were being added to accommodate what officials expected to be a massive showing by politicians and Delaware residents alike.
The funeral for Beau Biden, who died at age 46, caps three days of public mourning in which the vice president and his family have been both the consolers and the consoled.
Beau Biden’s casket lay in honor in the state Senate chamber on Thursday ahead of a public viewing at St. Anthony on Friday. On each day, seemingly endless lines of people streamed through to greet the vice president, whose solemnity at times gave way to his characteristic humanity as he greeted familiar faces with a broad smile, a lingering hug or a fond memory of his son.
The vice president, whose wife and daughter were killed in a car crash four decades ago, developed a reputation over the years for possessing a deep ability to comfort those in grief, and is often called upon to eulogize fellow American leaders. Saturday’s Mass honoring his own son is a reversal of roles of sorts for Biden, who in 2012 spoke of his son’s service in Iraq as he comforted a group of grieving military families.
“When he came home – it’s going to sound strange to you – we felt almost a little guilty because he came home,” Biden said then. “Because there’s so many funerals I’ve attended, so many bases I’ve visited. And you know, not all losses are equal. Not all losses are equal.”
A prominent political figure in his own right, Beau Biden served two terms as Delaware’s attorney general before setting his sights on the governor’s mansion. Many imagined his career would mirror that of his father, who represented Delaware for decades in the U.S. Senate before becoming vice president.
But in 2010, at age 41, Beau Biden suffered a mild stroke, then was diagnosed with brain cancer three years later. He returned to work after what doctors said was a successful operation to remove a small lesion, but his illness returned, and he died last Saturday – less than two weeks after being admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for aggressive treatment.
His death drew passionate expressions of sympathy from across the American political spectrum, the sense of sadness heightened by the sheer enormity of tragedy that the Biden family has endured over the years. It was just weeks after Joe Biden was first elected to the Senate in 1972 that Beau, then 3 years old, and his younger brother, Hunter Biden, were injured in the car crash that killed their mother and infant sister.
White House officials said the choice of Obama to deliver the eulogy reflected the tight personal relationship that Joe Biden and the president have developed after more than six years together in the White House. In the hours after Beau Biden died, Obama called the vice president to offer his condolences and was invited to give the eulogy.
