Today is National Bike to School Day. The event encourages children in grades K-8 to walk and bike to school by creating safer walking and biking routes.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, in Wisconsin, five through 14-year-old's make up approximately 15 percent of the total population; however, the age group accounts for more than 30 percent of all bicycle-related injuries each year.
Six elementary schools in Wauwatosa are joining in the fun, encouraging students with raffles, healthy snacks and contests.
Some schools will even provide bike maintenance checks for their bikes and free helmets.
