MILWAUKEE -- Local leaders have a goal to end homelessness in Milwaukee County within three years. The county will spend nearly $2 million a year. That money will help those on the streets find permanent places to live. "The statistics around the effectiveness of permanent housing are extraordinary," said Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. "People who are in this model are 50 percent more likely to get back on their feet. And if that isn't our goal, then we are looking at the wrong goal." The program will also offer services for mental health, substance abuse and job placement.

Milwaukee police patrols to increase as school year ends

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are working to make sure it will be a safe summer for local kids. Extra patrols will be out this week to keep an eye on students as the school year comes to a close. As part of Operation School's Out, Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn held a roll call at James Madison Academic Campus Tuesday afternoon. "Kids are in a good mood, they're gonna feel boisterous," Flynn said. "There is a zone of tolerance for hijinx versus misbehavior, and our job is to draw those lines." Milwaukee Public Schools' last day is Friday.

Graduating MPS students receive more than $36 million in scholarships

Milwaukee Public Schools is celebrating a big year for scholarships! Graduating students received more than $36 million to help pay for their higher education. That more than doubles the scholarship money received by the class of 2012. Winners were recognized by Superintendent Darienne Driver Tuesday morning at Riverside University High School. Driver said there are a lot of new resources like TEAM UP College Access Centers for students who need help looking for scholarships they can apply for. Winning students are heading to schools across the country, including; Alverno College, Barnard College, Brown University, Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, Marquette University, Mount Mary University, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Stanford University, University of Notre Dame, University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
