Why are gas prices falling?

Fri, 11/07/2014 - 1:16pm
MILWAUKEE- Gas is heading in the right direction for the first time in 4 years, officially dropping below the $3 a gallon mark. Nick Jarmusz with AAA Wisconsin called the prices unusually low. "Prices are down 20 cents below where they were at this time last year," said Jarmusz. He said there are several reasons for the drop in prices. There's less demand for gas, and part of it is seasonal. "This is the time of year where we see gas prices come down off of their summer time highs," said Jarmusz. Gas stations are also switching from the summer-blend to the winter gasoline, which saves driver's a few extra cents. Jarmusz said another contributing factor is that crude oil has come down about $25 a barrel since June. "There are many factors that could push the prices back up ... including economic uncertainty in Europe and Asia," said Jarmusz. Drivers should enjoy the low prices while they can, because they might not last.

Salvation Army rings in Red Kettle Campaign

Fri, 11/07/2014 - 1:04pm
MILWAUKEE - The familiar sound of the holiday season has arrived. Some Salvation Army bell ringers have been out since Saturday, but the organization officially kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign with a Tweet and Eat breakfast at the Milwaukee Public Market Friday. Spokesperson Faithe Colas says over the past few years, the Salvation Army has seen a 10 percent increase in families that need help. "That tells us that yes, people may be getting better employment and getting back on their feet but it's still not enough," said Colas. The Salvation Army hopes to raise $3.8 million this holiday season. "Every penny counts, we have 100 kettles and they are ringing bells from 10 o'clock to 7 o'clock in the evening. That's a lot of kettles and a lot of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters that add up," said Colas. Individuals wishing to get involved in the campaign can also start their own red kettle online. "You can send emails, text messages and Facebook messages to friends and family, to say... I have my own personal kettle and here's an opportunity for you to help me to help others," said Colas.

War Memorial looking to interview veterans as part of the 'Veteran Story Project'

Fri, 11/07/2014 - 12:41pm
Milwaukee's war memorial will be the site of living history tomorrow as local veterans are asked to tell their stories to a grateful nation. The veterans are being asked to sign up for 30 minute interviews as a part of the "Veteran Story Project." The interviews will be edited and turned into shorter stories exhibited at the War Memorial and online. Retired two star General and War Memorial Board Chair Mike Berzowski told WTMJ, "Just think about it, say for example you could go to the War Memorial site and see a two or three minute interview of your grandfather or something, I think you would probably find that kind of appealing." Berzowski said all veterans are welcome. He said a service member does not need to have been in combat to tell of their experience. "All ages and all conflict going all the way back to World War Two and as recently as Afghanistan and everything in between," Berzowski said. How much the veterans reveal will be up to them. They will be asked about their daily life, combat and how they define things like freedom. "It's difficult for people to talk about sacrifice," Berzowski said. "It's a difficult thing. But to the extent that we can get them to reveal some of that information, I think that would be of great interest." The interviews will be done tomorrow November 8th, and on Nov. 11th and 13th at the Milwaukee County War Memorial. To schedule an interview call: (414) 273-5533. For more information, click here.
