Wisconsin veteran remembers Pearl Harbor
CALEDONIA -- Even 73 years later, Leo Stewart says barely a day goes by that he doesn't remember something about that Sunday in Hawaii.
Stewart was on guard duty at Wheeler Field the night of December 6th.
"I had the midnight to morning shift," he recalls.
He was heading home the morning of December 7th, and that's when he heard the rumble of aircraft engines.
"I remember thinking 'God, that's a lot of planes for a Sunday.'"
When the first bombs were dropped, Stewart says he thought one of the planes - which he still assumed were American - had crashed.
His thinking quickly changed.
"I saw the third [plane] go by, then the fourth one; and two bombs came off and dropped to the hangar...that's when I recognized the meatball on the plane from the Japanese."
Stewart says at that point he ran into action, trying to get civilians to safety.
"Three women from of the Officer's housing had ran out into the open, crying and shouting that their husbands ran to the hangar line -- well, [the Japanese] were strafing gunfire right in that area."
Stewart says he and another Private collected them and brought them to safety, before he continued through the base.
During the attack, he helped get soldiers ammunition and wound up manning a machine gun in the aftermath. He didn't sleep for nearly three days.
Stewart went on to serve in various islands throughout the Pacific Theatre of World War Two - but he says the morning of December 7th forever shaped his life.
