The victor of this year's British Open will collect more than pound sterling1 million ($1.6m, 1.4m euros) for the first time in the tournament's history, organisers the R&A announced on Wednesday.
The overall prize fund totals £6.3m, £900,000 higher than previous year, with the runner-up taking home £653,000, and the third-placed golfer pocketing £420,000. 3 million, with the champion receiving pound sterling1.
It means the victor of the St Andrews event will pick up the biggest-ever prize in a major.
Jordan Spieth took away $1.8 million for winning the United States Open on Sunday.
Rory McIlroy is the defending champion having triumphed at Hoylake past year, and if he can retain the prize the world number one will pocket £1,150,000m - £175,00 more than 12 months ago.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of the R&A securing new TV deals that will see the world’s oldest major move to Sky Sports and NBC Sports from 2017 onwards.
